Bitter Sweetness
Chapter 1
Summer vacation had just ended for the students at Meio High School*. All around, students were all laughing happily, telling one another of their exciting experiecnes during the summer. There were happy faces in the courtyard, in the locker room, and scattered throughout the classrooms.
In one classroom, a young male with long red hair and deepp green eyes sat in his desk surrounded by a group of girls. The girls were giggling uncontrolably as the looked upon the handsome young man.
"Shuichi, what did you do over summer break?" one of the girls asked.
The young man smiled. "Why, I spent time with my family and closest friends. We had quite a time together." The girls giggled once more as Shuichi smiled at him. Of course, Shuichi was smiling confindently to himself. No one at the school knew his secret and he intended to keep it that way.
The bell rang, signaling the start of school. A few last minute stranglers rushed into the classroom and quickly took their seats. A few minutes later, their teacher came in, followed by a young girl. She was deathly pale and skinny. Her black hair fell down to her waist and was dull. Her eyes were as blue as wat water and held no emotion whatsoever.
"Good morning class," he said happily.
"Good morning sensei," they responded in unison.
"Well, I hope you all had an enjoyable summer vacation. I know I did. But we're all back in school in, itching to start a new learning process. Before I begin, we have a new student joining us today. She just transferred here from America. Class, please say hello to Ms. Yamazaki Yukari."
No one said nothing as they looked at the girl. She stood there in the front of the classroom, glaring out the window.
"Um, well. Ms. Yamazaki, please take that empty seat behind Kyoguko. I'm sure that your classmates will warm up to you later. Now, on with our first lesson of the day."
Yukari made her way to the seat. Several heads turned and watched her as she slowly walked down the aisleway. She placed her daybag on her desk and sat down, not once looking up at the other students. Shuichi could sense something about her. Nothing that he was use to sensing. Something about her was......different.
All throught class, Shuichi contiuned to sneak peeks over at her. She was quiet, nevering saying anything. She sat in her desk, all throught class, marking in her notebook. When the bell rang, signaling luch, she quickly grabbed her daybag and left the classroom. Shuichi quickly left, trying to follow behind her, but was bombard by his usual group of girls.
"Will you eat luch with us Shuichi?"
Shuichi looked at the girls and shook his head. "No, I think I'll eat by myself today. Some other time, okay?"
The girls looked sad as Shuichi made his way past them. He went into the locker, thinking he could find Yukari there, but she wasn't. He quickly changed his shoes and ran outside. There she was, sitting under the shade of a tree in the courtyard. He walked over to her and sat down.
"Hi. I'm Minamino Shuichi. It's Yukari, right?"
Yukari looked at him like he just interruped something important. "What do you want?" she asked.
Shuichi smiled. "I just wanted to say hi, that's all. Maybe become your friend if you like."
Yukari frowned. "I don't need friends. Especially pretty boys like you."
"Ouch, that hurted," Shuichi said jokingly. "Come, you don't mean that. Everyone needs a friend."
"Really?" Yukari asked. She pointed towards the school. "You see those kids in there? Tomorrow, they will hate me. They wiil hate me for who I am, for my likes and dislikes. They will hate me because I'm different than them. Since that's going to happen, and I know it will because it always does, why should I worry about making friends?"
"Because, if those kids do bully you, you'll have someone to talk to."
"Well, talking to people is something I don't enjoy doing."
"Why?"
Yukari glared at Shuichi. "Because, I don't trust people."
"Why?"
"Humans are not trustworthy."
"Then, that means that you are not trustworthy."
Yukari stood up. "Look pretty boy. Why don't you just go away. I want to be alone." With that, she stormed of into the school. Shuichi just sat there under the tree, looking at the spot where Yukari was just sitting.
"Well, kind of spunky, arent we?" he said to himself.

The bell rang and the students eagerly gathered their things, ready to leave school. Shuichi quickly sh his his books into his day bag and rushed outside of the school. He stood by the front door and watched the students leave. Yukari came out, fumbling with the latch on her daybag and a cd player in her hand.
"Let me help you with that," Shuichi said as he closed her daybag for her. Yukari looked at him.
"You just don't know when to give up, do you?" she asked.
"Yes, I do."
"Then why are you still talking to me?"
Shuichi shrugged. "What can I say? You seem like an interesting person. I would like to get you to know you better. Can I walk you home?"
Yukari sighed and shook her head and put he head phones on. A second later, loud music came blasting out of them. She started walking with Shuichi trailing behind her. They walked like this for 10 minutes before Yukari finally turned around.
"What the hell is your problem?" she screamed, removing the head phones.
Shuichi smiled. "Nothing, why do you ask?"
"Cayou'you're following me!"
"Well, when I asked to walk you home, you didn't respond. So I took it that you wouldn't mind me walking you home."
Yukari stepped up to Shuichi. "Look pretty boy. You are really starting to annoy me. Why don't you just turn around and go home? Is that so hard to do?"
Shuichi shrugged his shoulders. "Fine then. I'll go home. See you in school tomorrow then?"
"No. Don't even talk to me while we're in school. I don't want to have anything to do with a pretty boy with you." Yukari quickly stormed off, leaving Shuichi standing alone.
"Okay," he called after her. "See you in school tomorrow!"
