Scene 9
Scene 9 ------------ The Ravine
* When Shironji materializes he finds a very subdued atmosphere in the clearing around the entrance to the main cave. Used to seeing the tiny tailed Nijini demon now, none of the pack takes much notice of him as he follows his senses into the cave. He finds Sarista holding Gamaru. Her twin boys are asleep on the fur beside her. Troiyoku is nursing Gamaru’s newborn son. Shironji floats over to Sarista and gives her a slight bow of respect.
Sarista- Did you find him?
Shironji- Hai, M’Lady.. He is returning as quickly as he can.. Seems they were attacked by Bat demons last night. One of the females has been severely wounded.
Sarista- I see.. (Sighs) Of course his honor won’t allow him to just leave her.
* Sarista feels a stab of guilt at her words as she looks back down at her listless son. She wouldn't expect Hiei to do such a vile act. Not as well as she knows him now.
Shironji- He gave me a message for him, though.
* Gamaru shifts his dull eyes up to look at Shironji.
Shironji- He told me to tell you that you better stay alive until he gets back here.. Or he’ll drag you from Spirit World and kick you’re a-- all the way to oblivion.
* Lily enters in time to hear the last part.
Gamaru- I.. deserve all his.. wrath.
Shironji- Your duty is to obey your Alpha, boy.
Lily- Enough, shrimpy.
* Shironji looks away to hide his scowl from Lily as she comes over. The Kitsune pushes him aside.
Lily- You’ve given him the message. Now disappear.
Sarista- Lily,..
* Shironji poofs away.
Lily- I can’t help it. That little thing annoys me. I've eaten demons his size for snacks.
* Sarista rolls her eyes. Lily moves around to kneel beside Gamaru and caresses his slightly gaunt face.
Lily- I swear, boy, you are more stubborn than your mother.
Gamaru- I.. failed him,.. Aunt Lily.. I’m.. worthless..
Lily- You’re certainly no more worthless than I am, whelp.
* Gamaru looks back up at her. She sighs.
Lily- I know it hurts, Gam.. Believe me.. I’ve lost a couple full litters.. You still have a son to hold.
* Lily glances toward Troi who is now placing the sleeping baby boy in his basket with his own twins.
Lily- I’ve held my peace because I figured you would snap out of this by now.. But it seems that even in this you’re pigheaded.
Gamaru- They were.. the first I’ve ever.. lost.. I know it’s my fault..
Sarista- You did nothing wrong, son. I’ve told you that so many times.. It was just fate.
* Gamaru nods weakly and closes his eyes.
Gamaru- Hai.. I brought this on myself.
* Lily growls quietly and digs a pouch out of her skirt pocket.
Gamaru- It was because of how I.. treated the Alpha..
Lily- Enough. I want you to eat these.
* She places two yellow berries into one of Gamaru’s hands.
Gamaru- W-will those.. end this?
Lily- Hai.
* Sarista looks at the Kitsune who gives her Mistress a quick wink as Gamaru stares at the berries.
Gamaru- Okay.. He won’t miss me.
Sarista- Gam,..
Gamaru- I know, Mother.. But I just can’t.. deal with this.. It hurts too much.
* Gamaru starts to sob. Sarista embraces his head.
Sarista- Shh.. It’s okay, Gam.. Eat the berries.
* She strokes his shaggy hair as he allows Lily to help him eat the berries. He’s grown weak so quickly from his ordeal of childbirth and refusing to heal himself or accept nourishment. The two females watch him chew slowly. Within a few moments he just lets his eyes slide shut and relaxes in Sarista’s arms. She looks at Lily again.
Lily- Those will keep him asleep until Hiei returns.. I think that once he comes back and gives Gam some of his energy he’ll perk up out of this depression.
* Sarista sighs sadly.
Sarista- I hope so, Lily.. Thank you.
Lily- I have something else that’ll help him.. Lay him down and make sure he’s comfortable.
* As Sarista situates Gamaru down on the furs Lily presses a seed into the dirt floor. She uses her energy to make the plant’s roots find their way over to the underground reservoir that feeds the spring in the wall. When the roots are securely into the water source the plant bursts up out of the ground and develops a large gourd. When the gourd sprouts a sharp, hollow tendril Lily guides it to Gamaru’s arm.
Sarista- What..?
Lily- This plant will keep him hydrated.. It’s why I’ve been in my garden so much. I was making sure I created it perfectly.
* She glances up at Sarista.
Lily- It’ll assure that he doesn’t pass on from lack of nutrition, also.
* Again Sarista nods.
Sarista- You’re amazing.
Lily- At least I can do something right.
* Sarista reaches over and touches Lily’s arm.
Sarista- One depressed child is enough, Lily. Thank you.
* Lily nods and leaves quietly when she’s sure the plant is secured properly. Sarista glances a weak smile toward her other son. Troiyoku just nods and lowers his eyes to look at the three babies in the basket beside him.
