Chapter 9
Okay, here we go. Last chapter! Yaay!
Chapter 9
Kuwabara was very glad to finally get that respirator out of his throat. As soon as the nurse pulled it out and Kuwabara took a few deep breaths the first thing he asked for was a big Mac and a milkshake.
Kurama was happy to run the three blocks from the hospital to the local McDonald’s and get it for him. Kuwabara wolfed it all down in less than two minutes. He burped and laid back, content.
“So when can I get the hell outta here?” He asked Kurama
“Two days.”
“Two days? But I’ve already been in here over a week! Why do I have to stay two more days?
Kurama sighed heavily “Because you still have an injured lung. It’s just healed to the point where it can do its job now. And don’t you dare try to argue with me that you’re fine!” He cut in when Kuwabara opened his mouth.
After a few moments of silence Kuwabara whispered, “I was just hoping to visit Shizuru. Well her…grave anyway.”
Kurama looked up at him in realization. “Oh! Kazuma, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to sound so mean about it, it’s just-“ Kuwabara silenced him with a sudden kiss to the mouth.
When he pulled back he shrugged his shoulders indifferently. “S’allright. I can wait two more days. I just wanted to say good-bye. I know she’ll be waiting for me there until I do.”
“Well…maybe we can get the doctors to release you just for tonight. We can tell them it’s to pay your respects to your sister. They may understand.”
“Doubt it.”
Kurama leaned over and kissed Kuwabara deeply. “Mmm. Now this is what I missed.”
The trip was a no-go. No matter how Kurama tried to convince the doctor Kazuma would be fine for a couple hours he still flat-out refused. He said he was worried about what affect the cold weather would have on his healing lungs.
Now it was night and Kuwabara had already fallen asleep. Kurama was getting ready for bed himself when the power went out.
“What the hell?”
Kurama looked around to see if it was just the lights. Nope. Even the monitors Kuwabara was hooked up to had shut off.
He left the room, leaving the sleeping Kuwabara alone to go find a doctor and see what was going on.
Big mistake. He should’ve known better.
He found a doctor despite the pitch-blackness. A technician was sent to turn on the backup system and to see what the problem was.
He met up with Yusuke in the hall (Dawn surgically attached to his hip.) and listened to him gripe about the hospitals crappy electric system.
All of this took about twenty minutes and then he returned to Kuwabara’s room.
What he saw made him freeze and kick himself at the same time.
Toshiba had rearranged the bed so that Kuwabara was now in front of him. He’d tied his hands to the bed with the restraining cuffs they use on suicide patients.
He was staring at Kurama with cold, sadistic eyes and was pressing the gun to his temple.
Luckily, Kuwabara was still sleeping. He’d be terrified if he were awake.
“Get away from him.” Kurama snarled.
“You know you’ve got some nerve brat! Comin between me and my son like that. Don’t you know to keep your head out of affairs that don’t concern you?”
Kurama’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “He’s not your son. And the minute you even threaten to harm Kazuma it does concern me!”
Toshiba just laughed heartily. “Oh, that’s what that bitch sister o’his would always say.” He gestured to Kazuma with the gun.
He lowered his head and looked at Kurama with a twisted grin. “Took care o’her though, didn’t I?”
“You bastard!” Kurama got ready to attack but froze at Toshiba’s falsely sweet voice.
“Oh look! I think sleeping Beauty’s finally decided to wake up!”
Kurama stopped and looked closely. Kazuma’s eyes were beginning to flutter.
‘No, no Kazuma! You don’t want to wake up right now. Please, baby go back to sleep, please.’
But Kurama’s praying was in vain. Kazuma’s eyes slowly opened and were met with the sight of a pale, frightened Kurama.
“Kurama…?”
“Kazuma don’t move!”
“Yes Kazuma,” Toshiba whispered in his ear. “Just stay still and be a good boy. And maybe then I won’t have to hurt your little friend over there.”
Kuwabara’s eyes filled with instant terror and his vision became blurred with tears.
“Toshiba!” Kurama warned.
The man ignored him. He ran his hand through he boy’s curly hair and stroked his face and neck. “You’ve been a bad boy Kazuma. Running away from me like that. And for sending me and your mother to prison. Don’t you have any respect for your parents? A good son would never have done such a thing.”
‘Dammit, what do I do?’ Kurama thought. Toshiba was making sure to keep Kuwabara in front of him at all times and he was down so low to him that any attack Kurama were to use would most definitely hit Kuwabara.
‘Come on, distract him! If I can get him to raise himself up even just a little I’m sure I could hit him without harming Kazuma.’
“A good father would never treat his child that way. But then sense yo8u’re not really his father I guess that doesn’t apply to you.” Kurama sneered.
Toshiba looked up at him with his eyes. “Boy needed to be taught some respect. He was always running through the house, screaming, makin’ a mess, takin for granted all his mother and I did for him. And whenever we’d punish him, deny him meals, lock him in the basement, he’d find a way around it. Yeah, you were sneaky little bastard weren’t ya? Stealin’ food, drawin’ attention to yourself, tryin to get us in trouble! As if we were the bad ones!”
Kuwabara let out a strangled sob. “So we had to come up with somethin’ else. Started poisonin yer food, didn’t we? Makin’ ya sick. Took all yer toys away. Cant make a mess if ya aint got no toys. All yer toys, yer clothes, you didn’t have nuthin you could call yer own when we were done. And we came up with some pretty good punishments too didn’t we boy?”
Kuwabara was doing all he could to hold back his sobs. His eyes were shut tight, and his teeth were clenched. His whole body shook from the effort.
That and fear.
Kurama was shaking himself, but not out of fear, but anger. His palms hurt from making such tight fists and he was sure that if he looked he’d find blood there.
Trying to keep his cool, Kurama sneered. “Oh that’s why, huh? And here I thought you couldn’t get anything in bed from your wife.” Kurama knew this was a stupid thing to say but he was trying to get Toshiba angry. He knew he wouldn’t try to kill Kuwabara until he was done with him. What he was hoping for was that Toshiba would become angry enough to attack him, giving Kurama the opportunity to kill him.
And it seemed to be working. Kurama saw anger flash in the madman’s eyes and his grip on Kuwabara’s hair tightened, causing the boy to cry out in pain.
“S’cuse me boy? Maybe I need to be teachin you some respect!” Toshiba raised himself up just a bit. “Is that it, boy?”
Kurama smirked. “Maybe.”
Toshiba raised himself further then stopped. A bank look crossed his face, then he laughed.
‘Shit.’
“Haha, oh that was good boy. You almost got me there! The bitch would always pull that whenever I was beatin’ on her brother. Worked for a while but I caught on. Made her regret it too. Didn’t I, Kazuma?”
Kuwabara continued to fight back the tears and losing terribly.
Toshiba snickered.
Kurama was starting to panic a bit. ‘Now what? I have to get him away from Kazuma! What if I…’
Kurama cried out in alarm as Toshiba jerked forward a bit and went still His eyes went wide and he made a gurgling sound in his throat. Kurama saw the tip of a bloody sword protruding from his chest. Toshiba looked down at it and then over at Kazuma, whose eyes had gone just as wide as his.
He stared up at him in horror then screamed when he collapsed on top of him.
Snarling, Hiei grabbed him by the collar and pulled the dead man off.
Kurama reacted quickly and ran to Kuwabara. He untied his hands and held the sobbing boy tightly.
“Shh. It’s okay baby, he’s gone. He’s dead. It’s all right now. You’re safe.”
Kurama rocked him and kissed him, repeating over and over, “You’re safe. You’re safe.”
BLAH! That ending sucked! Now you all know why I hate forcing myself to write when I’m not in the mood! Because it always comes out as shit. *sigh* oh well. I suppose I can always come back and fix it later.
