Chapter 7: The Truth Hurts

Kurama had it rough the next day. Both he and Kori felt uncomfortable near each other. Kori of course felt uncomfortable next to her dad too. It was a nice, hot Saturday and it was time for them to pick up her grandmother, Shiori Minamino.

They left the house around 11 o'clock in the morning and Kori wasn't very sure on what to do anymore. Normally when they had spare time Kori and her Papa would talk and make jokes and her Dad stood near them watching everyone with a glare as if he was their guardian. He was still doing that but Kori wasn't speaking.

With an hour of total silence Shiori finally came out of a train walking towards the small family. "Mother," Kurama sighed as his mother embraced him in her arms tightly. It was always a welcoming sight to see his mother still happy and healthy. That was all he wished since he took her real son.

"Shuuichii it's so good to see you well," His mother replied with a sweet, small voice. She looked at Hiei and smiled at the small emotionless being her son called husband. She learned about the two after a week of their relationship and accepted it immediately. He was her only son and he was smart. If he truly fell in love with this man than what more could she do than accept him in their family. She walked over to the still Hiei and embraced him too. "Hiei it's good to see you too," She felt him embrace her back slightly and a smile came to her face.

"Nice to see you too," Hiei paused trying to remember the term Kurama taught him when they got married. He finally remembered and called her, "Mother-in-Law."

"Oh no, Hiei. Call me Shiori. I am family after all," She answered knowing that he'd feel more comfortable without formality. She saw her only granddaughter and smiled as well. She knew all about Youko Kurama for this blue haired girl told her about it. She also accepted it. Her son was her son. He grew up good not an evil demon like she was told. She birth a child half demon it just means that he's special. And he was still happy and beautifully healthy. He would always be her son no matter what and she'd be there for him like every mother should. She knew how they got Kori too. She understood that her granddaughter was a mix of different demons but she just compared it to be like a person with many origin. Like her friend is Irish, Japanese, German, Dutch, Italian, French, a little Polish, Mexican, Canadian, and even Turkish. She knew it sounded funny but it was true (I have a friend like that but I added Turkish and Canadian). She walked to the other girl and gave her a tight hug. "Kori, my precious granddaughter," Kori embraced her back with a small smile.

"Grandma I've missed you," Scary thoughts came to Kori's mind. Her grandmother was also a demon and now they're all her to kill her as demon sacrifice. She begged god to let her live. (They're all going to be funny this way.) She wanted to live and not be a freak with plant powers. "How long are you staying?" She asked finally being released from the embrace.

"Just for a few days maybe even a week," Shiori answered with a smile on her face. Kori nodded indicating that she heard. After that they headed home, Hiei of course dealt with the bags. Kori started to relax talking to her grandmother and actually smiled. It was always good to talk to her grandmother. The woman was so caring, sweet how could Kori even think her grandmother was a demon. Maybe it was her gramps?

Once home Kurama showed Shiori to the guest room where she would be staying. Kori went straight to her room saying she'd practice her keyboard. Kurama and Shiori were left alone as Hiei decided to go off and warn the others of this terrible news. Kurama sat down on the bed with a sad sigh. His mother noticed this and sat next to him wrapping an arm around his shoulder.

"What's wrong, Shuuichii?" Shiori asked worried for her son. Her son was normally happy and calm. She never wanted to see him with that sad look on his face ever in her life. She looked into his eyes and saw a forlorn look in them. "Shuuichii?"

"Mother, Hiei says he smells another fox demon," Kurama stated sadly. Shiori eyes widened not sure what that meant. "Meaning Kori is getting her powers." Kurama looked frightened and it tore Shiori's heart. The only time she saw her son like this was when Hiei was close to death and needed a long healing time. She couldn't even think of how her son was feeling at the moment. She didn't want to. It most be terrible because tears even formed in his eyes as he placed his face in his hands. "Mother what am I going to do? When Kori finds out she'll hate me." Kurama made harsh assumptions that would truly cause him heartbreak.

“Shuuichii you don’t know how Kori will react. She might react quite nicely,” Shiori replied softly trying to sooth her son’s ache. She didn’t know what to do. This never happened with her before and her son was truly worried of having his own daughter hate him. She always had the love of her son so she hadn’t gone through what Kurama was going through. “Maybe you should go rest, sweetheart. A nice nap might be good for you,” Shiori suggested receiving a nod from her son.

Kurama got up wiping the small tears that came from his eyes. He leaned down to kiss his mother’s cheek thanking her in the process. He walked out into the hallway and walked towards his room. He passed Kori’s room and could feel, even smell, the powers of a young kitsune. He walked all the way towards his room feeling that his plant concoction wasn’t strong enough to hold the girls’ power longer. He felt ashamed of himself for no reason at all. He was hoping this would never happen but the gang did agree to tell the girls. But maybe they’d have to tell them earlier than they wanted.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It was lunch again and this time Keku, Yuma, and Tana went to the other’s school. They all met up in the forest garden near the school but it’s still not permitted. They needed to talk about what’s been going on. The strangest things have been happening. They all decided that this had something to do about their parents seeing that they were acting weird.

“I had the weirdest thoughts that my grandmother was going to eat me. This whole thing is creeping me out. We have to find out what’s going on with us.” Kori explained as she sat on the grass cross-legged, arms folded, and frustrated. Yuma sat beside her seeing that Kori was protective of her younger cousin. Tana and Saru sat next each other also but under a tree. While Keku was resting her back against the ground.

“What? But Kori we don’t even know at all what’s going on. Maybe this is part of puberty that are mothers didn’t want to mention about.” Keku tried to find the easy way out. She didn’t want to believe they were another type of species or something. Maybe they’re mutants and would have to go live with the X-men. She laughed at the thought.

“Keku you know for a fact this isn’t puberty. I can do these weird things with plants.” Kori complained holding a died plant in her hand just watching it grow back to perfect health to shine in the sun, glaring at it.

“You have a green thumb.” Keku stated simply.

“I can kind of read minds.” Saru added.

“You’re psychic.”

“I can fly.”

“You’re as light as a stick, Tana.”

“I can freeze things.”

“You’re cold-hearted.” Keku said wishing she didn’t. She looked at Yuma to see the poor girl stiff and trembling at the cruel words. Keku knew Yuma was the nicest girl you could ever meet. To say she was cold-hearted was like saying Hell was Heaven. She saw Kori glaring at her menacingly trying to comfort her saddened cousin. “I didn’t mean it. I’m so sorry Yuma.”

"It's okay Keku." Yuma answered with a bowed head unable to keep her chin up. She felt childish for being hurt by such a small insult but it did. It hurt her no matter how small. Keku was her friend and she never thought that it would come to one of them calling her cold-hearted. She knew she was childish and now hated her personality for being like this. She knew everyone probably thought she was a baby and treated her as such and pitied her for it too. She felt a hand gently squeeze her shoulder and she turned her head to see Saru with a genuine reassuring smile. Saru knelt beside her keeping her hand on Yuma's shoulder.

"Don't think like that Yuma. You're being you and that's what we all love about you. Don't ever think we pity you or ever thought you were a baby. We know you're sensitive and we think it's cute. Trust me when I say this. We. All. Love. You.” Saru stated as she began to hug the youngest of the group. Yuma was shaking with tears in her eyes. Tears always came to her eyes when someone said something sweet to her and what the girls say is no exception. She’d almost full out sob if Kori or Tana said something sweet.

“Thank you, Saru. You guys are the best,” Yuma replied wiping her tears. She was soon embraced by everyone and got a huge apology from Keku non-stop. “I forgive you Keku,” Yuma repeated for the tenth time Keku still not stopping with her apologies. Everyone eventually laughed at Keku.

“Oh guys don’t forget we have practice later today,” Kori reminded everyone so they would know. Everyone nodded in agreement and parted ways to go back to school and classes.

*

The practice went great and the school loved them. The next few days went great. They ignored their parents as much as they could and their parents didn’t seem to fight it. They didn’t have a lot of homework and they were getting knack for these power things.

They were friends till the very end to and hung out away from their homes as much as possible but then the worst happened.

At the end of the week their parents came to their rooms and said dreading words, “We need to talk,”

*

They were waiting in the pretty dark alley with everyone. Actually only the girls along with their parents stood in that dark alley. The girls cowered away from their parents as far as they could go, which was only 2 feet. Sakuya said they would only have to wait another two minutes. And alas, after two minutes exactly a limousine drove into the alley stopping right in front of them. Bryan, like a gentleman, opened the door for his princess and allowed her to be the first one in. Still after 17 years of marriage he could make her blush like crazy. The guys were all chuckling at their teammates embarrassment and received glares from the women. Soon they all entered one by one all fitting into the long limousine. The girls sat down comfortably, shocked to hear Botan say excitedly. “We’re here!”

“How can we be hear it’s only been three minutes?” Tana asked, not believing that they could’ve already arrived to their destination right after she finally got comfortable. Yusuke chuckled knowing better as he opened the door being the first one out. He helped his Keiko out, making sure she didn’t trip. He did the same for a nervous Keku but didn’t mind her protests.

Everyone walked out and the girls were staring in shock. What was in front of them was a huge white building. For a second they thought they were in America but new better than that. They watched their parents walk inside knowing they should follow but fear welled up inside of all of them and they turned around to get back in the limo only to see it wasn’t there anymore. All they saw was a bunch of different colored people instructing small, moving clouds around. They dashed up the stairs, thinking it safer in the building. But what they came across were more people that were blue, red, purple, even green! But this time some of them even had horns, running around inside the place, with stacks of paper in hands.

Only the second they walked in everyone around them immediately stopped, starring at them, some even dropped their papers in shock. One second all was quiet the next everyone was making a semicircle around the girls some blabbing out words like, “Princess Tana, Princess Saru, you have finally come to claim your throne with Lord Koenma and King Enma.” Or, “Miss Urameshi, Miss Minamino, have you come to see your land as the next Demon Lords.” Or, “Miss Kuwabara have you come to protect the barrier between the demon world and human world.”

The girls were scared like no other and were relieved when their parents cleared a path for them. They dashed through the long office room until they were led into another larger office room this one only having a desk and chair. They were told to sit down on the wide couch and did so. They waited nervously for something to happen.

“Okay how to say this…” Yusuke contemplated not knowing how to start the conversation. Could it really be that easy to tell them that they’re all not entirely human? He felt a reassuring hand from his wife and simply knowing she was near him comforted him greatly.

“To start,” Hiei began then turned to look at the girls and said bluntly, “You girls aren’t human.” Everyone freaked out at how Hiei had put it. You think he could grow a small heart to care how shocking the sound of that would be.

“What?” Kori asked.

“What Hiei was trying to say was…that you girls aren’t entirely human,” Kurama added knowing it still didn’t sound the good. The girls just looked at them confused as hell. They decided, against Hiei’s will, for Yukina to explain most of it.

“Well you see, the thing is that…um some of us aren’t really that human. Yuma, sweetheart, you are part human, but part of you is also part of me, a koorime, an ice demon. Keku, you are also part human, but, my dear, you are also part demon because of your father. Saru, you are such a sweet girl but I’m afraid to say you have no human blood inside you, you are part thunder demon from your father and part other world royalty from your mother. Tana, you also, have no human blood inside of you, you are pure other world royalty from both your mother and father. Oh, Kori, my little niece, you have the smallest amount of human from your grandmother but my dear, it’s over powered by the demon blood your fathers’ possess. You have inside of you fox demon, fire demon, and ice demon blood.”

The girls were all scared that their parents had gone crazy. Yuma officially fainted and Kori was currently trying to wake her. Eventually they got her awake with Kurama help from a seed he pulled out of her hair and used his Ki to let it grow. The flower that bloom had an aroma that smelled worse than garbage. Yuma immediately woke up to cover her nose. Kurama took his Ki back from the plant slipping the seed back inside his hair.

“Now we know where your plant powers came from,” Keku commented looking at Kori who glared at her for being an idiot.

“We already knew about it girls,” A voice behind the desk spoke. The girls snapped there heads up to see spinning chair at the desk. It spun slowly only to reveal a little kid looking no older than four years old. He heard his sister Sakuya whisper something to him and looked down at his petite form. A spun the chair again but this time what they saw was a 20 year old charming look man. “Now to get on with business.”

“Koenma! This is not business! This is about our daughter and the other girls,” Botan scolded her husband for making this sound like another case. He should show a little consideration for the child she was forced to raise practically all by herself when her husband was alive, healthy, and immortal for crying out loud!

“Your…daughter?” Tana asked pointing at Koenma wide-eyed only to go into shock when Koenma nodded calmly. She fainted on top of her cousin and once again the girls had to deal with trying to wake up one of their friends. This time though they got to do it without the smelly flower.

“Wait a second. Are you saying you’re my uncle?” Saru wondered shocked to see the man nod with a sigh. She was strong enough to not faint like Tana but she was scared of what information would make her faint. “This is crazy. Why wouldn’t we be able to know this? Unless it was about Aunt Botan carrying Tana when you were what? Five years old?” Saru guessed trying to put logic into this crazy story.

“Actually I was 110 when she carried Tana, currently I’m still 120,” Sadly by his answered Tana once again fainted but everyone else felt like it too. Who could live over a hundred and still look so young? That was not possible. She just hoped there was some sort of logic behind that story.

“Ko! That’s saying to much right now!” Sakuya scold her younger brother with a slap over the head. She was certain that the girls wouldn’t be able to handle some of the ages they were at. For she might only look 24 right now but really she was 223 amazing right? If anything Bryan was still a bit older than herself and so was Kurama and Hiei so she was not the oldest. Anyway where they all come from growing up is slower. The girls will also live long lives.

“Wait, so in a sense, your saying we’re all demons?” Keku asked trying to understand. She didn’t believe one single word of this. Okay so they were seeing people with horns but that could be really good make-up. She wasn’t about to believe that she was some soulless creature of destruction, no way. Sure she liked fighting but killing was out of the question.

“Well yes, with the exception of Tana, she’s just a reaper’s daughter, oh and the Princess of the Spirit World,” Yusuke stated thinking that Tana was the one reacting the worst to all of this. She would be the one most affected of the group. He knew that she thought herself of the not special person in the group. That they could do without her. Kori was a very talented pianist, she was smart, charming, beautiful, and had a good voice. Saru was also a very experienced drummer, smart, with a great low voice, and she had this good luck sense to her. Keku was strong, attractive, true she wasn’t the smartest of the group but she could be bright, and had to admit almost every guy wanted her, she was great at the guitar and had a funny and perverted personality that made her stick out. Yuma was the shy, kind-hearted, and had the best voice of all, well her and Kori had and equal amount of singing capability but still Yuma could sing much higher in the soprano region. And Tana saw herself as unattractive, she was average grade, and her voice was lacking the beauty everyone else’s had, she did sing good but not great like the others, she thought herself plain and ordinary. Yusuke sighed, the poor girl would have her life turned upside down. Seeing that Sakuya refused the throne to become Queen of Spirit World, her brother would become the next ruler, and so that means that after Koenma, Tana would then become Queen of the Spirit World to take care of everything dead and alive. That was a lot of responsibility.

“Yusuke, sweetheart,” He heard his wife shake his shoulder distracting him from the responsibly that Saru, Keku, Kori, and even Yuma will have. He looked at Tana to see that she had fainted again and sighed wondering what else would they have to say. Oh yeah, about Genkai, the old hag, sadly was still alive (He‘s happy and he should admit it!).

“I don’t believe you at all. Give us proof that we’re demons,” Keku challenged her father afraid of nothing, except the truth. Yusuke sighed again as he turned his head to look at Yukina and Hiei needing their permission. Hiei nodded knowing it would work and Yukina sadly nodded scared of the outcome.

“Fine then, you want proof my persistent daughter. We will give you proof. Kori, Yuma cry some tears for us,” Yusuke commanded and suddenly Yuma was scared and Kori glared at the man making such demands. She reassured her cousin everything would be alright and she got up alone and purposely hurt herself, hoping at least one tear would come out to satisfy them. Yuma cried out not expecting her cousin to hurt herself. Soon two tears streamed down both of their faces. Not expecting anything they ignored it. But once the girls saw the parents staring at the ground, they looked for themselves to see four glistening gems on the ground. Two were a beautiful green and another was a sunny yellow. They stared wide-eyed and Kori gently picked up the two green ones under her thinking them beautiful.

“There’s your proof,” Hiei explained looking at her daughter’s tear gems. They were a new color compared to normal koorime blue. It must be because the girls weren’t full koorime. “A tear gem is a sign that the person is a koorime, an ice demon. Kori you got your koorime blood from me and Yuma received it from her mother, my sister,” Hiei tried to explain. All the changes for all the girls will be hard but they had to be strong for this.

“What is this? I’m not related to you. How the hell can I get genes from you, if I’m not related to you!” Kori complained clutching tightly to her tear gems. Was this the reason she was told not to cry? To be strong no matter what? What the hell was she?

“The thing is you are related to me. You don’t have a moth…” Hiei was cut off from saying the wrong thing when Kurama covered his mouth quickly with a hand.

“Kori, honey, the thing is, you are related to Hiei. He is your biological father, so am I. The thing is that you weren’t technically born from a woman. You were spiritually made, for me and your father to raise. So in a word you are made to have both mine and Hiei’s genes like a child should their parents. So you don’t have a mother,” Kurama tried explaining slowly not thinking that Kori could go as white as Tana. Kori for the first time now fainted from shocked and was caught by Keku in a hurry. The girls tried to wake her now from shock. She woke up in a minutes time trembling from shock and was quickly embraced by Yuma. They were on the other side of the room from the adults and were glad the none of them got closer to them. Even though they could tell that Keiko and Yukina were dying to run over and comfort the girls.

“And so, you’re all demons,” Saru glared at them all seeing that her uncle was about to speak she added, “and other world stuff whatever.” She couldn’t help but glare at the silent Keiko and Kuwabara. She was holding Tana currently knowing her cousin was also still in shock.

“No kid. I’m human and so is Keiko. And if you keep giving her that look I’ll slap some tape on your eyes so you know to show respect. Keiko has only been a good mother and friend to you girls,” Kuwabara answered not liking the looks the girls were giving the poor Keiko.

“And my grandmother?” Kori asked, Keku nodding in return to her father. They wanted to make sure they weren’t endanger from someone they loved so much. Shiori was a wonderful grandmother and Atsuko even though she used to be a drunk was still an awfully nice woman.

“No, those two are human,” Yusuke answered calmly knowing more questions were to come.

“Why do we have to know this?” Yuma asked softly still holding Kori. The adults weren’t expecting that question at all so were unsure of how to answered it.

“You have to know because the binding potion we fed you is wearing off and so you must train with Master Genkai to control your powers,” Bryan answered looking down to make sure he wasn’t in trouble. Sakuya gently patted his shoulder assuring him all way well.

“And she would be another demon?” Saru asked.

“No she’s a human,” Sakuya answered truthfully seating down on Bryan’s lap seeing that there we no longer any spare chairs. She was getting so exhausted from all this. She knew it was important but she could read the girls’ minds and feelings. Really everything going on in those girls’ heads was giving her a headache.

“I still can’t believe this,” Kori said obviously going into denial which was something that the others definitely didn’t need. Keiko and Yukina sighed, a sign giving permission to the Urameshi Team to prove it the best they could. In unison Yusuke, Kuwabara, Sakuya, Kurama, and Hiei got up to stand in front of the girls.

“What are you doing?” Tana cowered deeper into her cousin’s arms. They were all scared out of their minds of what next could happen.

“Showing you proof,” Sakuya answered as suddenly a light glowed around her and her eyes glowed as a light bulb would and just as bright and her hands caught on fire. She was the first. Next was Kurama who sighed as he looked inside of himself to find Youko to ask him to come out but still leave Kurama in control. Youko gave him permission and so Kurama’s body contorted so that he grew taller, his hair longer, his claws sharpen, and his eyes a bright gold. Hiei was the one who changed the most. His skin changed into a green scale, his claws became longer than Kurama’s, he let his Jagan loose and eyes popped out all over his body. Yusuke was next to turn as his ears lengthen and tattoos appear all around his body. Kuwabara showed off his spirit sword by concentrating all his spirit power into his hands, willing it into a blade. “Is this enough?”

“Wha?” The girls said in unison afraid out of their minds now. They tried to shrink away from their parents as best they could.

“I think they know enough already. Guys that’s enough! They will be sent to Genkai’s for training as soon as possible, they will learn how to control their powers and then we shall tell them of their duties until then no more answering questions,” Koenma demanded with a stern voice looking pleased when the team went back to looking like a normal human. “Now go home. I’ll tell Genkai to expect.”

They all left the office going back into the limo for 3 seconds then getting out. All of them silent for the time being. Until Kori finally asked, “What are our powers?”

No one expected someone to penetrate the silence and so paused at hearing Kori’s voice. But Sakuya answered anyways.

“Well Kori, your powers will consist of plant control, ice control, and fire control. Saru, will have psychic abilities, Angel Spirit, her father’s powers of controlling thunder and lightning, the weather cloud also, and other spiritual powers the royal family has. Keku, you get your father’s spirit gun and spirit wave, also his demonic powers. Yuma, you get the Spirit Sword and your mother’s koorime powers. And Tana you get Angel Spirit, the royal powers, and some of your mother’s reaper abilities but we can’t allow you to become a reaper so you are not use those powers.”

“Wait you guys keep saying reaper. Please say you don’t mean…” Tana gave her mother a nervous look.

“Hon, I’m a reaper. Or other wise known as the grim reaper,” Botan sighed as her daughter fainted for hopefully the last time of the day. The other girls were quickly at Tana’s side trying to get her to wake up.

“Wait. If you’re the grim reaper then why aren’t you wearing all black with that sickle and all ugly?” Keku challenged.

“I lose one bet and it ruins my reputation for life,” Botan shrugged, hating the memory. She was the top reaper ever but she lost one bet. Had to scare one human and that human spread the word of the gruesome grim reaper and now everyone expected her to be black and ugly, it was offensive!

“Okay this reaper things settled. Now again for me and Tana. What’s this Angel Spirit stuff?” Saru asked her mother, Sakuya who was tiredly rubbing her temples. The problem with being psychic, when five teenage girls’ minds were going haywire.

“Okay, Angel Spirit is a certain ki in the royal family. I’m currently the youngest member to have mastered the technique. It involves three certain abilities. Defense, Attack, and Recovery. Defense, is a strong ki barrier call Angel’s Light. Attack, is a scary move called Devil’s Inferno. A move that sets your opponent on fire, from the inside, out. And Recovery is just Healing Angel, where you can heal any severe wound. Of course all these moves take a large amount of ki. So it’s hard to master,” Sakuya stated ignoring the wide-eyed look her daughter was giving her.

“This is crazy,” Saru shook her head hoping the it was all a dream and she would wake up to everything being normal again.

“Your life was never normal,” Sakuya countered reading her daughter’s mind.

“We should really be going home. Sak needs to sleep,” Bryan said holding Sakuya protectively in his arms. Everyone else agreed and so left to their own homes. But the girls refused to be separated and so went to sleepover Keku’s place again.

“I can’t stand this! I mean I thought life was going so good. We still have that damned rehearsal the day after tomorrow!” Kori exclaimed falling onto her sleeping bag. She desperately wanted to rebel against this. She wasn’t a demon! She wasn’t a bad mix of demon!

“Why don’t you write a song,” Saru commented as if reading Kori’s mind. She actually did read the other girl’s mind but not purposely.

“You know I will. You guys don’t mind do you?”

“Nah. What will ya call it?”

“Runaway?”

“I really do! Just go away somewhere!”

“Ha!”

“What’s so funny Saru?”

“I was just thinking of some place we could runaway to.”

“Spit it out!”

“Well you, very impatient Keku, I was thinking. Why not go to the demon world?”

“Cool.”
