Chapter 6
I got a Yu Yu Hakusho Calendar! I’m so happy! And the thing cost me my last twelve bucks too.
Chapter six
A week passed and Kazuma still had not woken up. He was no longer in danger of going into a cardiac arrest but the longer Kuwabara slept the more Kurama’s anxiety grew.
The fox rarely ever left the room. Nurses had set up a cot for him at night when security failed to drag him out of the room. Yusuke and Hiei would bring him food and books to read while he sat by Kuwabara. He left only to take a quick shower and change, always returning within the hour.
Yusuke’s visitations with Dawn were just as faithful. He’d brought all of her favorite story books from home and would read each of them to her no matter how many times she asked to have the same one read again. He brought her stuffed bunny and blanket as well and would buy her new little presents and flowers from the gift shop every day.
They put puzzles together and played games, Dawn loved card games. At night Yusuke would wrap her up in her blanket from home with her bunny and gently rock her to sleep.
Yusuke had done his best to explain to his sister what had happened to Kuwabara and Shizuru. She had taken it pretty well. Yusuke had expected her not to understand that Shizuru was gone but she understood just fine.
Shizuru had been like a sort of mother to her. After Atsuko died the Kuwabara’s moved into the apartment down the hall from Yusuke to help him out. They took turns with everything including the midnight feedings and even taking off work when Dawn got another ear infection that the child seemed to get almost every other week.
Yusuke was great with her. He bought her all of the best clothes and toys (carefully checked for any choking hazards) he took her for walks and would even take off days from work just so he could stay and play with her. The only thing that Yusuke would flat-out refuse to do was change the girls’ diaper. Shizuru always got stuck with that job. Whenever she or her brother would answer the door to find a sickened Yusuke holding a giggling baby out at arms length Shizuru would just laugh and take her from him.
One thing that Yusuke loved to do though was give Dawn her bath. He would give her one every night before bed and Dawn would spend at least an hour splashing and kicking the water with her chubby baby legs, making Yusuke laugh the whole time. Afterwards he would always cover every inch of her skin in baby lotion and then rock and sing her to sleep while giving her a warm bottle.
This had always been Yusuke’s favorite part of the day. More than once he would fall asleep in that chair with Dawn still held securely in his arms.
As a toddler Dawn had never been afraid of thunderstorms. In fact she seemed to find them fascinating. Gasping in amazement at every flash of lightning and squealing in laughter at each thunderclap.
However during her stay in the hospital her love for thunderstorms seemed to have taken a major plunge. Now the thunderclaps reminded her of the gunshots she’d heard. She would now cling fearfully to her brother soaking his shirt in her tears while he did his best to comfort the frightened child.
He rocked her and wrapped her tightly in her blankets, knowing that it gave her a sense of security. He sang to her and read to her some more but nothing he did seemed to help. Finally at around two in the morning she finally fell asleep from exhaustion.
Yusuke placed her on the bed and covered her up. Instead of returning to his cot he laid on the bed beside his sister in case she woke up again. Exhausted he fell to sleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
Two hours later though, he was rudely awakened by Hiei’s voice and he was shaking him.
“Dammit Hiei I’m trying to sleep! And if you wake up the baby I swear I’m gonna pound your ass!”
“Hn. Whatever detective. I just thought you’d like to know that the oaf is finally awake.”
Meh. Not much happened but I still thought it was important. Hoot! Go me two updates in one day!
