Chapter 5 A Cold Wind Blows

Kurama left Jin to deal with the angry Shinobi when he woke up. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to be there, it was just that he had to watch Team Toguro fight. It had been Genkai’s advice to watch them to get an idea of their tactics for the battle. She had told both him and Hiei, though Hiei appeared to have not followed the old lady’s advice.

Perhaps Hiei was right to disobey. Kurama thought, leaning forward to get a better view of the battle. It was not a very long battle and it certainly was gory. He had sort of figured out Karasu-the man he knew he was destined to fight. He wasn’t sure how he knew that he was destined to fight him-he just knew. As the match came to a bloody conclusion, Kurama waited, mulling over what he had just seen.

“I’ll see you all in two weeks,” Juri announced. The stadium slowly emptied of its fans, disappointed that they’d have to wait two weeks before the finals would take place, but they didn’t have a choice; the teams needed adequate time to rest and the stadium needed repairs and maintenance, which was normal. A major clean-up job had to take place as well. Everything had to be absolutely perfect for the finals. It was the biggest match-up of the century.

Kurama waited until the stadium had been emptied of most of its spectators before turning and making his way out. He needed some time to think, to clear his head before going back to check on Touya again. The stadium hallways were emptied for the most part, though some demons still hung around.

“Hey, check it out,” one demon nudged his partner. “Dead man walking!” Kurama ignored them, lost in his own thoughts.

I must find a way to transform into Yoko Kurama. He thought. Otherwise…he didn’t want to think about it. He suddenly stopped as he realized that two demons blocked his path. Two very powerful demons. Two powerful demons he did not wish to see. Bui and Karasu. The latter did the majority of the talking. He had a silky smooth voice.

“So you were the only one who watched? Either your team is very confident…or very foolish. The finals will come and four of you will die.”
Something did not register correctly in Kurama’s brain. “Only four?”
“Yes. One of you dies today. You know who it is.”

A loud slamming sound caused Kurama to jump. Bui had unexpectedly swung his fist around and brought it into the wall, leaving behind a huge dent. The sheer power…! Kurama looked around. In the three seconds it had taken for him to be distracted by Bui, Karasu had completely vanished, which made Kurama feel uneasy.

Where is he?! He thought wildly.

Pale slender hands reached out from behind and grasped his neck, not for a kill, but intimidation.

“Your hair is damaged,” Karasu whispered in his ear, running his fingers through the long red locks. Kurama gasped audibly. “Human bodies are so frail, aren’t they? You fear my touch but yet…maybe you also want to know it.”

“Get away!” Kurama yelled, swinging his first around, though Karasu easily dodged it. He jumped into the air and neatly landed next to his teammate.

“Don’t get upset. It’s only a game. You’re my favorite of the five, Kurama. Your coolness has a certain…attraction for me. When I like something, I like taking it away. Save your fight for me…okay?”

He and Bui walked away, leaving Kurama in his defensive position. Only when he was certain they were gone did Kurama relax.

This is not good…He thought.

A cold wind blew as two former teammates faced down for what they knew was the last time. They knew only one would walk away…

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jin was very worried when he felt the wind change. It did not give him a good feeling. He tried to remain cheerful but he just couldn’t shake the feeling of dread he was getting. It was made even worse when Kurama came in that afternoon, looking ready to faint.

“Are you okay?!” Jin asked.

“Yes, I’m fine,” Kurama answered though Jin didn’t believe it for a second.

“Here, sit down,” he said, ushering into the chair he had recently vacated.

“Thank you.” He was silent for a while, trying to catch his breath. Finally, he looked up at Touya, who had woken up (and calmed down). “How are you doing?”

“Better,” Touya answered. “The pain is gone. I have to admit, your herbs really did help.”

Kurama smiled. “See? I knew they would. You just needed to trust me.” Touya smiled lightly. Suddenly, he stared at Kurama, whose face had gone deathly pale.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Nothing,” Kurama lied.

Touya snorted. “Liar. I can tell something’s bugging you. What…” he sharply cut himself off and his eyes widened in shock. “What power!”

“Yeah, I felt dat too. Not good I say. The wind’s blowin’ in the wrong direction. Sumthin’ bad’s gunna happen. I can feel it,” Jin nodded.

Someone’s life faded away. Someone close to them…

Kurama squeezed his eyes shut as he sensed Genkai’s power vanish. No Genkai. Please no. He thought.

He was not the only one who detected Genkai’s passing. Hiei felt it, as did Koenma, Botan, and surprisingly Shizuru.

Koenma sighed softly.

Botan went into the bathroom and turned the faucet on to cover the muffled sounds of her sobs.

“Did you feel that?” Touya whispered. There was no need for the other two demons to answer; the expressions on their faces gave away the answer.

Yuskue burned with anger. He punched the perpetrator in the fist but though the demon’s hand was twisted, he barely even noticed. He was filled with exhilaration as he punched Yuskue’s lights out and left…

Pu made a soft, sad sound.

“Oh what’s wrong with you now Pu?” Kayko asked, holding the little spirit beast up. A lone tear ran down its face.

Kuwabara was the only one who wasn’t able to figure out what had happened to Genkai. He had run off to find Yuskue, and had felt the power surge, but hadn’t been able to put two and two together.

That evening, everyone felt as though a weight had been put on their shoulders and they were incapable of smiling again. Even Kuwabara, who was left in the dark about the truth, sensed the sadness and felt sad himself. They had two weeks to figure out how to take Team Toguro down. They only hoped that it was enough time.

To be continued…

A/N: Sorry about such a short chapter. It’ll be made up for in the next chapter; that one’s going to be long. I know it now. SOMEONE please review. It would make me so happy if at least one person reviewed this, even if it was critical.
