Chapter Four
Yusuke looked at Aki, who was cradled in Kurama’s arms and was unconscious. After he had dropped Keiko off for her afternoon classes, Yusuke received an urgent call form Kuwabara on his cell phone telling him to find them immediately, that it had to do with Aki. Yusuke was utterly confused. “What the hell is going on here?” he asked, looking from the girl to his team members.
Kurama sighed and glared at Hiei. “Well, Hiei decided that he would handle the situation on his own and almost killed Aki,” he answered, bringing Yusuke’s attention back to her.
“Okay. Wait, what situation?” he asked.
Kuwabara grinned and rubbed the back of his head. “Well, Hiei tried to attack her and uhh . . . it turns out that Aki knows a hell of a lot more than she let everyone believe.”
Yusuke shouldn’t have been surprised. He had come to expect almost anything from his three friends. It had become the natural order of things actually but in this situation, he was actually
stunned. “Hiei attacked her. Why the hell would Hiei attack her, and why the fuck are you on a college campus?” he demanded, looking down to the shortest member of the group.
Hiei hn’ed and glared at Urameshi. “It is none of your business what I do or why I am here. The girl knows of demons, she knows far to much for any normal human,” he replied.
Kuwabara rolled his eyes and Kurama looked beyond pissed off. “Lovely, so now Hiei has the right to go around killing off innocent people who happen to know ‘to much’,” Kuwabara muttered, glaring at Hiei.
Yusuke looked as though he were on the verge of a mental breakdown. “My god, Hiei, have you lost your damn mind. Yama can have us all killed now and Koenma can’t do a damn thing.” He began pacing, ranting with every step he took.
Kurama shifted Aki in his arms and cleared his throat, effectively cutting off Yusuke tyrants. “I’m sorry to cut all of this short but I feel it might be better if we went somewhere else to discuss our options. My apartment is the closest,” he told the other three males when he had their attention. He turned and began walking away, leaving the others to follow him.

Yusuke pulled out a chair from Kurama’s table, after being told the short version of what happened under the oak tree; sitting down and grabbing one of the sodas Kuwabara had grabbed form the fridge. “Man, we are so screwed, aren’t we?” he asked, looking up at Kuwabara and Hiei who had taken a seat next to him.
Kurama gently laid Aki down on his bed, checking her vitals again, making sure her breathing was steady. He removed her glasses from her face and smoothed her long bands away from her soft face. Without the glasses and hair for her to hide behind, she was actually a very lovely girl. Her face was soft, angelic in its composition. Her forehead was small and smooth; her nose was small and straight, not pointed or round; her mouth was what captivated him the most. Her lips were small but full and were colored in a pale pink and they looked softer than one of his precious roses. She looked so innocent that it made him wants to protect her and at the same time corrupt her. With the right teacher the girl had the potential to be a really great fuck but that was no concern of his. He has no interest in a human female that is liable to get them all killed. He checked her pulse once more and walked out his room closing the door behind him.
************************************************
Yusuke sighed. After sitting here for three hours waiting, Aki had yet to wake up. Kuwabara had fallen asleep and Hiei and Kurama were each just waiting patiently. But for our Yusuke, patience is not in his vocabulary. “What the hell did you do to her Hiei? Are you sure you didn’t hurt her?” he asked, looking at the closed bedroom door nervously.
Hiei stiffened his groan at the question. “As I have told you before, detective, I only hit a pressure point on her neck to render her unconscious. Kurama moved her quickly enough to keep me from actually hitting a nerve that would have left her paralyzed, like I had originally intended,” he said, leaning back in his chair and folding his arms in front of him.
Yusuke grimaced at the word paralyzed. He knew that they were in one hell of a mess. What he didn’t understand was how Hiei felt that one little girl was a threat by knowing he was a demon. “Hiei, I don’t get it. Since when have you given a damn what anyone knows or doesn’t know?” he asked, his voice rising slightly.
Hiei smirked at Yusuke. “I don’t give a damn but that girl is not normal,” he stated, challenging the others to doubt him.
Kurama, who had been silent listening to Aki’s steady breathing for any sign of change, looked up at Hiei, his eyes narrowing. “What do you mean, Kurama?” he asked, watching his every reaction for any sign of what he meant.
Hiei smirked at the fox’s sudden interest. “The fact that the girl knows of demons does not concern me. What does is how that human girl, who has nothing special about her, showed me no fear.”
Kurama laughed at Hiei. “You fool, she was so terrified, and she would not stop trembling until you knocked her out.”
Hiei shook his head. “No, you are wrong. I smelt no fear and her eyes; I’ve never seen eyes like that. It was almost as if she were expecting it to happen and I was playing right into her hand. They were laughing at me,” he finished.
Kurama thought about what Hiei said. He was right about the smell. There was no fear in the air but that couldn’t mean anything right? Aki’s sprit energy was below that of an elderly person who was about to bite the dust, so she couldn’t possibly be a threat. There were so many explanations and answers but only one person could give them any answers. “We will not say or do anything until Aki can give us answers,” he said, making it clear that his word is final.

Koenma jumped out of bed, his heart pounding in his chest, his overly exhausted mind trying to rest but is given little reprieve due to the nightmares plaguing him. After he finished reading the file, Koenma told Botan to have all of his work put on hold because he needed to sleep. So far he had not succeeded in getting more than an hour. He sat up in the bed and ran his hand through his hair. He jumped suddenly when he realized someone else was in his bed. It was the boy assassin.
The young man smiled at him, snuggling into the pillows behind him even more and turning the page of his book. “You know, little prince, you really shouldn’t sleep so late. Why, someone might come in here and slit your throat, and with your pretty wifey up and about, she wouldn’t find your body for hours,” he said nonchalantly.
Koenma paled, jumping from the bed and grabbing a pillow to defend himself. “What the fuck are you doing here, you fucking depraved psychopath?” he demanded, clutching the pillow even tighter to his chest.
The young assassin laid the book down against his chest and laughed at Koenma’s foolish attempts at securing his safety. “Why, you don’t want to explore this attraction between us, my Lord Koenma?” he asked, getting on his knees on the bed and laying the book down. He crawled over to Koenma, his merriment becoming even more apparent as he watched Koenma back away, the pillow still in hand. “No, this time I actually came for business.” He took a piece of paper from his back pocket and held it out to Koenma. “Sign this. Take it, it wont bite you,” he said, urging Koenma to take the paper.
Koenma snatched it from the assassin’s hand, ignoring his laughter. His eyes widened when he read it. “This gives you permission to go from one world to the other freely. You truly are insane if you think that I’m going to sign this. I’d rather be dead,” he said, thinking that he had finally gained an advantage.
The young boy smiled, revealing perfect, white teeth with just the hint of fangs. “While that can be arranged easily, I just thought that maybe you wouldn’t wasn’t multiple deaths at your hands because that piece of paper isn’t going to stop me. If you try to stop me, you will wish that you were dead.”
The gilt in his eyes caused Koenma to start looking for a pen. He could tell that the assassin was not joking. “How the hell did you get away with all this shit when you worked for my father?” he asked after signing the paper and giving it to him.
The boy assassin gave him another heart stopping grin. “Why I threatened to kill you if he went against me of course,” he said and disappeared in the same mysterious manner as before.
************************************************
Kurama was the first to know when Aki finally woke up. He rushed to his room, seeing her sitting up and looking around, completely disoriented. He slowly walked to her side so he wouldn’t upset her. “Aki, are you okay?” he asked when he reached her side. He lifted her face to check her pupils and checked her heart rate and beat. She turned out to be fine.
Aki searched the room frantically, looking for her glasses. “My glasses, where are my glasses?” she asked him, her eyes frantic.
Kurama smiled and reached around her to the nightstand. He picked up her glasses and placed them in her hands. “Here you go. Can you tell me what you remember last?” he asked while he watched her put them on and adjust them slightly. He noticed that her hair had fallen out of its bun and was going in every direction.
Aki took a deep breath, slipping to the edge of the bed so she could sit up straight and proper. “Umm . . . Hiei attacked me, you saved me, and then I feel asleep,” she said shyly, looking around the room. “Uhh . . . Kurama-san, where am I?” she asked.
Kurama stood up and gestured to the bathroom. “You are at my apartment. Now go fix your hair and whatnot. You’ve been asleep for well over five hours and we need to talk.” He promptly left the room to wake up Kuwabara and inform the rest of the team that Aki had finally woke.
************************************************
The sprit detective team sat down around the table with Aki seated at the end. It felt more like an interrogation than a friendly discussion but after Hiei tried to kill her it wasn’t a huge surprise. Aki cleared her throat and lowered her head. “This is about the demon comment, right?” she asked, looking to Kuwabara and Yusuke for renascence.
“Hn,” Hiei mumbled, turning to Kurama. “She is a smart one, isn’t she?” His sarcastic remark got him scolded by Kuwabara and Yusuke.
Kurama turned to her and looked her directly in the eye. “Yes. You are a human; both Hiei and Kuwabara have tested your energy to be sure of this. You have nothing special about your sprit energy or awareness. You are simply just a human. Now what we are curious about is how you know about demons,” he told her, Yusuke nodding his head in agreement.
Aki blushed and stood up. She walked to the living room where Kuwabara had put her backpack. She carried it over to the table and opened it up. “I have known about demons for years. I love to read and have bought many books from a demon merchant on Makai and all of its demons.” She pulled out a leather bound book and handed it to Kurama.
When Kurama opened the book, his eyes grew wide and he dropped the book to the table. “How the hell did you come across this?” he demanded, watching out of the corner of his eye as Hiei picks up the book.
Aki blushed. “From a demon. She is an upper level, with access to many things that are not allowed in this world. I love to read and demons fascinate me. I have read hundreds upon hundreds of books on different species: their traditions, habits, and powers. It is only natural that I would know that Hiei is one. Tai tells me I know more about demons than I do about humans.” She looked up at the shocked faces of Yusuke and Kuwabara and the look of indifference from Hiei. Kurama wasn’t looking at her at all.
Kuwabara gave an uneasy laugh and tried to change the subject. “That’s the most you have ever said since we first met.”
Yusuke went to pick up the book but was stopped by Hiei. “No, detective. You cannot read this. That book needs to be burnt.” Hiei went to pick it up but Aki grabbed it out from under his hands. “Girl, do you have any idea what the hell you are holding? What is written on those pages is sacred and should have never been put down on paper.”
Aki cradled the book to her chest, treating it like her own child. “No, I wont let you touch this book. It is mine and I will do no harm with it,” she said, tears coming to her eyes.
Hiei growled at her, standing up to reach for the book. “You little human bitch, this is not some fucking fairy tale. That book is all about earth dragons, demons that live deep in the forests of Makai. That book doesn’t just explain their function or their traditions, it tells of their sacred history and their weaknesses. That is unfair and will get you killed,” Hiei finished, causing Kuwabara to turn to his head and Yusuke to lean back in his chair and whistle.
“Holy shit, who the hell would write such a book?” Kuwabara asked, looking form Hiei to Aki, trying to decide which side who would chose.
Kurama laughed at the oaf’s naivety. “Such books aren’t uncommon, Kuwabara, they just come with a price. Spies and traitors don’t care to tell secrets, one just have to find them first.”
Yusuke smirked at Kurama’s reasoning. “So, why is it so bad to have these books if it is not so uncommon?” he asked, eyeing the book again as if its cover would tell all its secrets.
It was Hiei’s turn to smirk. “Detective, if a demon were to write a book about all of your powers, both strengths and weaknesses, would you ask for ten percent of the profit?” he asked.
Yusuke gave his trademark stupid grin. “I didn’t think about that. I guess it was obvious, huh?”
Kurama turned back to Aki. “Why do you want to keep something that is so detrimental to your well-being?” he asked, searching her eyes for the answer he knew she would be unwilling to give.
Aki clutched the book tighter. “My purpose in life if to learn as much information as possible. The demon world has so much and I enjoy learning about it. Besides, what could I do with the information that I learn in these books? You said it yourself, that I am nothing special. Please don’t take my books away from me,” she pleaded, her eyes becoming wet with tears again.
If there was one thing in all of the three worlds that Yusuke and Kuwabara could not handle, it was a girl on the verge of tears. A hysterical girl was easier to deal with than a girl in the middle. Even Hiei was having trouble just telling her to keep the damn book and to stop with the tears.
Kurama, on the other hand, was immune to this. Being one that all the women want has its advantages. He was thinking out her explanation and reasoning with the greatest of care. After a few tense and unbearable minutes, he finally made his decision. “Keep the book, but do not take it out in public. Even though you are human doesn’t mean you wont be killed for the information in that book,” and with that Kurama stood up and walked to his bedroom to get some much needed sleep. Kuwabara and Yusuke decided they would walk Aki home, while Hiei followed form the trees. As they were leaving, Aki picked up a piece of paper that fell from her pocket and securely tucked her book into her bag so it wouldn’t disappear on the way to her and Tai’s apartment.
So there you go, Kittens. How is it?
So is everyone ready to kill me because they haven't a clue what the hell is going one. I would be ready to kill me if I didn't already know, my kittens! So, on with the story and if you can figure it out I'll give you a cookie! Enjoy, Kittens!
