Chapter Five

Author's Note: This is not an update... apparently the site deleted Chapter 5 during the issues we were having and thus I am reposting it. I will start working on the Sixth chapter tomorrow. I love you all who have reviewed and thanks to everyone who has been patient with me and school... and by the way in case anyone wants to know.... I PASSED ALGEBRA!!!!!

~I am happy all of you loved the fourth chapter to Shadow Lover. I would like to take the time to thank everyone who reviewed as well, and those of you who left kind words when I said I wouldn’t be updating for a while. It really does mean a lot to me and really helps with the inspiration needed to continue writing this fic. I remember how a lot of you though three was a depressing chapter… allow me to warn you now… this chapter… is worse… much much worse. I cried writing it. There will be a lot of powerful and very depressing emotions in this chapter. I am asking you all not to kill me for the emotional hell I am about to put Hiei through… or the pain Kurama will go through. I promised a lot of you who wrote me a happy ending, I promised also a few of you not to disappoint you on the pain Kurama will go through… I plan on describing it out to the best of my abilities. I believe this is about to let me see how good of a writer I am… if I help you to feel even a small bit of the pain Kurama is going through and a bit of the desperation and downright depression Hiei is going to go through then I will call this story a success. Please read and review this chapter, because out of all of them… this is the most important one and I need to know if I got the emotions across well enough.~

Stretching his back the guard on watch of Kurama’s cell rolled his head on his shoulders, letting off a soft sigh as the various cracks and pops sounded. He had been watching the fox’s cell for the past three days, with the exception of when that foul tempered fire Koorime would visit the sleeping Youko. He didn’t understand why anyone had to watch the cage. It wasn’t like the Kitsune was going anywhere, but he went about his job regardless, after all who was he to question Koenma’s orders? Stretching yet again he turned with a yawn to look in on the redhead Youko. He was still sleeping, and hadn’t moved on that bed one inch. Shaking his head he headed down the hall to get a drink. He doubled the fox would be moving anytime soon.

The figure on the bed belonging to Kurama slowly began to stir, bringing him closer and closer to wakefulness. The first thing Kurama noticed as he slowly came out of his poison induced sleep, was the fierce throbbing of his head. It felt like it was about to explode. The second thing he noticed soon after his head was the excruciatingly painful sensation running through his body to pool in the pit of his stomach. He groaned and shifted his body to curl in a small ball, then immediately regretted the action as a pain worse than anything he had ever known laced through him, clenching his insides that he swore he was being ripped open. Opening his mouth to scream as tears welled in his eyes he noticed how much his throat burn, and that only made the tears fall unchecked down his cheeks. What in the hell had happened to him?

By Kami his throat was on fire! He let out a strangled cry before forcing himself up and to his feet getting off the bed. As soon as his feet touched the floor he attempted to walk only to double over in pain as he felt another sharp roll of something akin to desire and a type of torturous pain that felt something like hot coals igniting him inside in an attempt to burn their way out of him. He fought to hold back his screams to protect his already raw throat, but found he could not as the pain only worsened.

“Make it stop!!!! Please someone help me!” Kurama felt like screaming again as his throat ignited and felt as if he’d shredded it.

The guard hearing the screams ran back to his post and was shocked at the sight that greeted him. Kurama lay in a ball screaming and clutching his body. He was sobbing which made his screams come off sounding torn and gruff probably due to his throat. The guard wasted no more time in running to Koenma’s office. He immediately ran through the open door and stood in front of the desk where the toddler was sitting behind it going over paperwork.

“Koenma sir… t-the…”

“I don’t have all day say it already!”

“Kurama…. Is awake….”

Koenma stood from his desk and hurried down the hall toward Kurama’s cell. Once there he commanded the guard to unlock the door. Once the door was opened Koenma hurried inside and to Kurama.

“It’s okay… Kurama it’ll be all right.” Turning to look at the ogre behind him gawking he felt his face turn red in anger at the stupid look on the guards face.

“Pick him up you fool and help him to the bed!”

Koenma watched as the guard went to Kurama and lifted him, still screaming, his body was tensing and releasing as his pain came hard, then subsided then came worse than before. Shaking his head he turned and went to the counter and poured Kurama a glass of water. Moving to him he lifted his head and helped him to drain the glass. Once it was gone he laid Kurama’s head back down even as the fox continue to weep and scream.

Koenma’s face was pale at the sound of Kurama’s screams. They sounded as if he were being tortured in the most horrifying manner known to the mortal and demons worlds both. The sound was sickening, and Koenma felt his heart twist when Kurama grabbed his hand and screamed.

“MAKE IT STOP!”

“What the hell is going on here?! What are you doing to Kurama!”

Koenma jumped feeling his heart rush to his throat and for the first time was in real fear of the being now standing in the cell with them. Hiei had a look on his face that he had only seen when he was about to kill someone. Koenma swallowed the lump in his throat and spoke softly, and about as calm as his shaking form could manage.

“He just woke up… it appears that the pain has not lessen while he was sleeping.”

“Hattori!!!”

Kurama’s screams were getting worse, his pain felt as if he was being killed. His heart felt like it was being ripped from his chest along with the burning sensation inside of him that was about to make him lose his mind. He didn’t hear the conversations going on around him, he couldn’t, all he could feel was this sickening feeling like a part of him had died, and this horrible pain. Moving his hands into his hair he screamed long and hard, his body in so much pain it was unreal.

Hiei flinched at the sound of that scream before moving to Kurama while shoving Koenma out of the way, as he had paled even more than he already was. Slowly he pulled Kurama’s hands out of his hair only to find himself shocked as a force he had not been prepared from hit him square in the chest catching him off guard and sending him flying back. Using his speed he was able to land on his feet.

“Don’t touch me! I want Hattori! Why am I locked up here?! What have you done to me?!”

“Kurama please…” Koenma began only to be cut off by a frantic Kurama who was trying to get up again, but through his pain found it difficult to move.

“NO! Let me out of here!”

“Kurama you cannot leave you see…”

“Koenma.”

Koenma froze at the cold icy tone of Hiei’s voice and looked over at the Fire Koorime. The look in Hiei’s eyes stopped any chance of him saying anything; it was as if he had frozen his vocal cords. Shaking his head he turned and walked out motioning the guard to follow him and leave them alone. He didn’t know what else to do, but they had had no choice… even Hiei had agreed, for if he had not he would have never kidnapped Kurama himself.

Hiei watched as Koenma left and made sure they walked away before moving to Kurama who was huddled in a ball on that bed sobbing. When emerald orbs met his own in a glare that froze even him, he made no move to reach out for him. The sounds coming from his fox’s mouth was heart wrenching. He couldn’t imagine what Kurama was going through, but if his screams and sobs were any indication, he hoped he never would.

“Fox…”

“Why?”

“We had no choice… we had to get you away from Hattori.”

“You can’t just take someone from their mate! He loves me Hiei! I love him! Why would you do this to me?!”

“I…” Hiei clenched his fists as the words fell from Kurama’s lips. He loved Hattori. He refused to believe that damn it, but it didn’t make the words hurt any less.

“You are a liar… you said you would be here for me… I never would have expected this from you…”

Hiei felt as if he had been slapped, even as he watched as Kurama gripped his hair in frustration and let out another earth shattering scream. He took a deep breath to calm his own rising temper hearing Kurama down him so and praise that damn murderer.

“Your beloved Hattori is a cold blooded killer… those humans who died at your school… he slept with them and left them unmarked… they died because he would no longer go to them. He is using you Kurama… using you because you look like his beloved mate he lost due to his own stupidity in not believing the spell that had been cast on him.”

“LIAR!” Kurama leapt from the bed in a straight all out attack on Hiei which Hiei clearly dodged and allowed Kurama to land on the ground. Kurama narrowed his eyes and went to move up through his pain to attack Hiei again for slandering his mate when papers flew at him.

“Look for yourself!”

Kurama froze and looked down at the papers at a female who looked like his identical twin staring up at him through the pages. He narrowed his eyes as he studied her features even as he felt the pain lace through him again he knew Hiei was lying to him. He had to be. Hattori was not a killer!

“Liar… you sicken me Hiei… never would I thought you would stoop so low… so disgustingly low through your own jealousy… that’s what this is about isn’t it? Creating fake pictures in an attempt to turn me away from my mate and into your arms. It will never happen do you hear me? I will never allow myself into the arms of a heartless forbidden one like you!”

Hiei turned his back on Kurama and merely stood there clenching his fists in an attempt to control his temper and keep him from lashing out at Kurama. He wanted to beat him to a bloody pulp, but he knew this was not Kurama talking.

“What? The truth is too much for you? That you are beneath me Hiei… especially now… I will never forgive you for this. You are nowhere near the demon Hattori is. The very sight of you sickens me. You dare to let them do this to me… just days after promising you’ll be here for me. I hate you… do you hear me? I HATE YOU!!!!”

Hiei had enough grabbing Kurama he slammed him against the nearest wall and red met green in a fierce glaring battle Hiei would have never in a thousand years guessed would have ever came to pass.

“You are blinded by what he has done to you. Your mark doesn’t even exist but in your mind. Only you see it as a true mark, when I see the magic surrounding it. He does not love you Kurama… he doesn’t even know you… he only cares that you look like her. I will ignore your words to me because of this… your mating with him is nothing more than an illusion.”

“LIAR! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU!”

“So be it.”

Hiei dropped him and turned to move for the door of the cell though in truth all he wanted to do was shake the hell out of Kurama and knock his sense back into him. He was hurting, the words Kurama had said to him sliced deeper than he wanted them to. Stupid ningen emotions. He hated Kurama for bringing this out in him, for being the only person who knew how to hurt him so deeply.

“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME? I LOVE HIM! HE LOVES ME DAMN IT YOU LIE!”

“It’s a shame then because…” Hiei paused as he moved through the door and then stood still a moment right out side of it before he shut the door listening to the lock sound as it closed.

“I love you…”

Hattori frowned as he stopped his search where his redhead’s scent dissipated. He found himself growing all the more furious and he knew he had lost his beloved Rose. The tantei had him now and there was nothing he could do about it without getting caught. He just hoped that his mate had the strength needed to make it without him until the battle came. He knew he would have his beloved redhead back at that time, because they would need him in order to lure him. He narrowed his eyes in fierce anger and let out a cry that sounded through the night.

He had been searching for days following the faint remnants of his redhead’s scent. When he had finally figured out what had happened, the anger that coursed through him sent his power up three fold. He would make them pay… every last one of them, but especially the one who carried the scent of the one who had taken his love.

He had waited too long to have his Rose back to have her snatched from him again. He refused to stand idle and watch his dreams come crashing to a horrible end. No… he would have her back if it’s the last thing he did… even if he had to kill Koenma himself. He had known they were after him, but he had figured that hadn’t realized that he had taken his redhead as his own. He would have never guessed they would go after a mortal to get to him, but they had. It infuriated him to no end, but he would have his revenge.

Turning he began to head back into town, his mind running on his beloved redhead and the pain his love must be going through. How dare they come in-between him and his mate? Moving down the street he narrowed his eyes as a young girl stared at him in surprise. He could hear her thoughts of how lovely he was plain as day. Smirking he walked up to her and smiled softly.

“Hello.”

“H-Hi…”

“My name is Hattori and yours is?”

“Suki…”

“Such a pretty name… would you like to go get a drink or something to eat Suki?”

The brightness in her eyes shone as she screamed in glee within her thoughts. Hattori kept that kind smile on his face as she took his hand and the two walked off together. Oh yes, he would have his revenge on them… for now… he would take this mortal… and give Koenma another reason to be very worried.

Hours Later….

Hiei sat down against the wall in the hallway leading to Kurama’s cell. The fox couldn’t see him nor could he feel his ki as he was masking it quite well. His head was lowered in his hands and he was shaking with his own sobs. He had taken watch over Kurama’s cell since he needed to be close in case Kurama broke out, but sitting there listening to him scream in pain and curse him was about to be too much to handle. When he had first left the cell Kurama had gone insane throwing himself into the cell doors, screaming his pain, how much he hated him, and worse things he never expected to hear come from the one he loved.

“HIEI!!!! You said you would be here for me! You said you were my friend!! Do you hear me Hiei?! You lied to me! You lied! I hate you!!!”

Hiei clenched his fists in his hair to keep himself from running to Kurama even as the fox’s screams of pain and the sound of him collapsing to the floor was heard for about the one hundredth time that night. The sounds of his screams were insane, the sound of the pain Kurama was going through was tearing Hiei’s control to shreds. He couldn’t do this damn it. He shouldn’t have to!

“HIEIIIII!!!!! YOU BASTARD!!!!! NO WONDER THE KOORIME KICKED YOU OFF THE ISLAND!!! YOU ARE NOTHING!!! DO YOU HEAR?!!!! NOTHING!!!! I HATE YOU!!!! I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU FOR THIS!!!! YOU CAN DIE FOR ALL I CARE!!! I WILL NEVER BELONG TO YOU, YOU WHO KNOW NO LOVE, YOU WHO FEEL NOTHING!!!! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING MORE TO ME THAN THE FORBIDDEN DIGUSTING CREATURE YOU ARE!!! I HATE YOU!!!!”

The words were cut off by painful screams that shook through Hiei’s body as he listened to Kurama slam himself into the cell doors again. Screaming out in pain, screaming for it to end, screaming for Hattori. It was too much Hiei felt himself near his breaking point. Standing in a fury he stormed into Koenma’s office allowing the door to slam and hit the wall. Glaring at the toddler seated behind the desk he growled.

“Let him out.”

“Hiei… its too soon and…HIEI!” Koenma’s eyes bulged out of his head as he found himself at the end of a blade pointed at his throat. He could clearly see the torment written on the fire koorime’s face. He too had heard Kurama’s screams, his words, and he had felt for Hiei. He could only imagine how much this was hurting him no matter how much Hiei hid it right now behind his anger. He knew he had no choice… he had to let Kurama break out.

“All right. All right! I’ll let him go.”

Hiei removed the blade then moved with speed that amazed even Koenma. He unlocked Kurama’s cell door and let it slide open without the fox even seeing him due to him being in a corner screaming at the top of his lungs.

Kurama heard a creaking sound and opened his eyes thinking Hiei had returned to torment him with more lies, but was surprised to see the door to his cell open and unattended. Without even a second thought he made a break for it and used every ounce of stealth he had ever possessed to begin working his way through the palace and toward the exit. Hattori’s name chanted like a mantra through his head as he moved until he reached a portal. He was going back to his mate. Back to where he belonged, away from the so-called ‘friends’ who had betrayed him. They meant nothing to him now; all that mattered was Hattori, and his return to him. Moving through the portal he took a breath once on the other side and forced himself to hold back his screams as his pain worsened. He took off on a run for the man he believed he loved using his senses to lead him back to him.

I’m coming Hattori… I’m coming…

The black clad figure flitted through the night in silence, his movements swift and sure, but solid and with a purpose in mind. Red eyes kept watch on the movements of the fox as he ran straight for his foe, and for a moment pain lit red eyes then quickly turn to that of pure anger and hatred at the very thought of the bastard who had dared harm his fox. Despite the pain coursing through his heart as the words of the fox played through his head over and over again like those disk things that skip when scratched, all he could think of was the safety of his fox, and the death of that foe.

Little did Kurama know he had been followed the moment he left his cell, he was determined to follow him, to get rid of this bastard once and for all. Hattori would pay, and whether or not Kurama forgave him for what he had done did not matter right now. Only getting Hattori did, as for the rest… it would have to wait until that bastard was dead. There would be no trial, no jail waiting Hattori if he could help it.
