Chapter 5
Later that evening the police came to question the boys on what had happened.
“What happened?” Yusuke raged “You people let some psycho outta prison and he came with a vengeance, that’s what happened!”
“Yusuke not in here! Please!” Yusuke and Kurama had been in Kuwabara’s room at the time and that was not the place where Kurama wanted Yusuke to start venting his frustrations. “If you’re going to start yelling and screaming then do it somewhere else! Not here!”
Yusuke turned his rage filled eyes to Kurama, then they fell on Kuwabara. Seeing his friend in such a condition his eyes softened a bit and he nodded in understanding to Kurama. Then he stormed out into the hall, two confused police officers following him.
“I’m sorry sir” said the first one “But I’m not sure I understand what you’re talking about.”
Yusuke sighed and pushed his hands against the wall, waiting for his wave of anger to pass. When he opened his eyes they had gone cold and indifferent.
“About 13 years ago, when Kuwabara was four his mother married a man named Koshi Toshiba. Eh would sexually abuse and molest Kuwabara almost everyday. Of course at that age he had no idea that what his stepfather was doing was bad. So he never fought him and he never told anyone either. But as Kuwabara got older Toshiba got a little bolder with his acts until he actually tried to fuck the boy. Kuwabara was six then and he didn’t like what his stepfather was trying to do. So for the first time he protested.”
“How did Mr. Toshiba react?”
“He beat him and raped him. Six years old and his own stepfather held him down and raped him. And he said that if he ever told anyone than he would do the same thing to his sister. After that everything went down hill. His stepfather started beating him and Shizuru all the time and at night he would go into Kuwabara’s room. If he fought him than Toshiba would beat him some more and come up with some twisted ‘game’ for him the next day as punishment. Most of these games would leave him barely breathing at the end. So Kuwabara would have no choice but to just let his stepfather do what he wanted with him.”
“What about the mother?”
“His mother had always beaten her kids. Some of the ‘games’ were actually her idea’s. Kuwabara doesn’t think that she knew about the raping though. This went on until Kuwabara was ten. One night Shizuru ran away during a beating. Police found her three days later and sent a social worker to the apartment to see what was going on. Toshiba and his wife were arrested and charged with abuse, neglect and child endangerment. Their mother was found guilty of all of the charges and is still in prison.”
“And Toshiba?”
“Eh was charged with physical and sexual abuse and molestation. He was found guilty of only the physical abuse. Kuwabara wouldn’t testify to the sexual charges and there was no real proof of it either.”
“Is Toshiba still in prison as well?”
Yusuke had been looking at the floor the whole time, speaking in a monotonous tone. Now he looked coldly at the two police officers. “NO. He was released six months ago. And ever sense he’s been stalking Kuwabara everywhere. He’d send him little notes and shit to get under his skin. Once when Kuwabara was home alone he managed to get inside and harass him. He told him that he’d never be able to escape and that he was somehow going to get him back.”
“Didn’t he report this to anyone?”
“No. He was too ashamed. We didn’t even find out until four days ago. He didn’t even tell his sister. Kurama found one of the notes which had been getting more graphic and threatening. He made Kuwabara tell him about what had been happening. Boy was he pissed. First time the guy ever lost his cool. Kuwabara was actually a little scared of him then. He had Kuwabara move in with him and was working on getting a restraining order on Toshiba. But then…I have no idea how he found him. He busted in this morning with a gun and grabbed Kuwabara. He tried to kidnap him and when we tried to stop him he shot Shizuru. He was using Kuwabara as a shield and he was so scared he actually froze. But once Shizuru was shot Kuwabara snapped out of it and started struggling. There was a fight and then I heard the gun go off a few times. Next thing I know Kuwabara’s on the ground, blood’s pourin’ from his chest and he’s not responding. Kurama and I were so caught up with Kuwabara and Shizuru we didn’t even notice Toshiba run away.”
“Then Hiei showed up, he’d heard the shots.” ‘Or rather he sensed Kuwabara’s energy suddenly drop.’
“So the shooter was Koshi Toshiba.” Said the officer, writing on a notepad. “He is still on the loose and most likely armed. Thank you Mr. Urameshi. And don’t worry, we’ll catch him and put him away for good this time.”
The officers left. Yusuke remained standing in the hall way like a statue. The whole time he’d been talking he had been like a robot. He’d unattached himself from his emotions. But now they were coming back and Yusuke felt that familiar rage boiling up inside him.
He turned his head to look at Kuwabara through the glass. Kurama was still sitting with him, holding his hand to his cheek and stroking his face. He leaned over and kissed his boyfriend a on the forehead gently. Then he looked over at Yusuke. The two looked into each others eyes for a while, as though silently communicating with each other.
‘Not if I find him first.’ Yusuke vowed
