Chapter 3

Kuwabara checked his backpack one last time before going downstairs to the kitchen. He saw that Shizuru was already in the kitchen drinking a cup of strong coffee. “You’re up early, sis. Are you feeling okay?” he asked since it was unusual for her to be up before noon on most days.

Shizuru glared at him above her caffeine. She didn’t know how the baka was such a morning person. He most certainly didn’t get it from her. “I can’t get up and see my brother off for his first day of his second semester?” she asked in a sugarcoated voice.

Kuwabara dropped the toast he was eating. “What the fuck do you want, you psychopath?” he demanded, knowing there was no way in hell she would get up just to make sure he went to school.

Shizuru grinned. “I guess you aren’t such a baka after all are you, ne? Well, I want you to do me a favor,” she said, her grin fading and her expression becoming serious.

Kuwabara sighed and leaned back in his chair. “Is this illegal or anything?”

Shizuru almost laughed at his question but stopped herself, knowing it was in her best interest to keep him happy. “No, Kazuma, actually this is about Aki.”

Kuwabara straightened up in his seat immediately. “What, is she sick or something?” he asked, his concern for one of his closest friends evident on his face.

Shizuru couldn’t help but smile at him. “No, no. This has more to do with her safety,” she told him, taking another sip of her coffee.

“Safety! Is someone bugging her? I’ll kill them, I swear I’ll make sure their own mother wont recognize them,” he yelled, jumping up and slamming his fist down on the table.

Shizuru was thankful she had her coffee in her hands or she would have had one hell of a mess. “Kuzuma, sit you’re ass down. No one has threatened her or anything, yet. You and her have a couple of classes together and she is your tutor, right?” she asked when he finally sat back down.

“Yeah, what of it?” Kuwabara asked as he finished eating his breakfast.

“Well,” Shizuru began, “I kinda want you to pretend to be her boyfriend.” She finished in her coffee.

Kuwabara spit out his milk, hitting the cabinet behind Shizuru. “Are you bull shitting me? You know I like someone else.” He looked ready to kill her.

She set her coffee down and rubbed her temples. “Yes, of course I know about your undying love for Hiei but that is not my point. Aki is not like us. Tai and I are similar so you know the girl can take care of herself. Keiko has Yusuke, who has everyone scared shitless of him and who does Aki have? No one. She is so little and she is going to get picked on for sure unless someone protects her,” she finished, looking at the thoughtful look on Kuwabara’s face.

“So you want me to keep her safe?” he asked, making sure that was all Shizuru wanted.

She smirked. “Of course, I most certainly don’t want you to dirty her.”

He blushed as she laughed. “But what if Hiei finds out?” he asked, wanting to leave no ground uncovered.

“What the hell would he be doing at a college anyway? You have nothing to worry about,” she answered, watching him pick up his bag and head towards the door.

Kuwabara looked back at her and waved. “Yeah, I guess you have a point. Okay, I’ll do it but not for you but for her. She is so little and shy and I’d hate to have to kill some asshole,” and with that he was out the door.

As he watched students come into the classroom, Kurama tried to decide if being a human was really worth listening to a group of drones bore him to tears. He looked at the two empty seats at his table. He had told all of the girls, and even a few boys, that they were taken. Lying to keep the masses away had become part of the norm for Kurama. He was to pretty and had a looked soft. One of the most feared demons in all of Makai was considered delicate. As he began to fiddle with his books for the millionth time in the past five minutes, he saw Kuwabara walk into the classroom. As he opened his mouth to call out to him, Kurama noticed that Kuwabara wasn’t alone. Tucked securely under his arm was a girl with glasses.

*************************************************

“Now, Kuwabara-kun, I don’t need you to protect me. What if your crush were to find out about this and actually think it was real. I will not come between your happiness with someone,” Aki said softly, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose. She looked at the young man who had his arm around her possessively, glaring at anyone who dared to look at her.

Kuwabara looked down at and smiled reassuringly. “No worries. He doesn’t go to school and besides, I’m worried about you. What if some punk thought that he could get his hand under your skirts? You would blush so hard that you would pass out due to blood loss and then he would have his wicked way with you.” When they entered their classroom, Kuwabara looked around searching for two seats next to each other. Suddenly, his eyes grew wide in recognition and he pulled her closer. “Come on, I have a good friend on this class I’d like you to meet. Hey Kurama!” he yelled, leading her to the back of the room towards a handsome redheaded man.

Kurama raised his hand in recognition and watched as Kuwabara and the young girl walked towards him. As they grew closer, Kurama looked the girl over. She was barely a few inches over five feet tall, with a small frame hidden under a baggy navy sweater and a long skirt that ended a few inches above her ankles. He almost laughed when he saw her shiny, black Mary Jane shoe and white ruffled socks. Looking back at her face, he noticed that it was almost completely hidden by hair and her glasses. ‘What a surprise. The oaf must really be confused with his sexuality if he is trying to hide his attraction to Hiei with this sorry excuse to all women in all three worlds,’ Kurama thought, standing up to greet his friend and the girl.

Kuwabara finally let Aki go, almost tripping her at least three times during the forty-nine second walk to Kurama. He reached out and shook Kurama’s hand in a friendly greeting. “Hey, man. I didn’t know you would be taking this class. This is so awesome. Dude, we have to form a study group, though I am sure you have already had lots of offers, haven’t you? What are you doing in a British Literature class anyways? This is so awesome,” he rushed, not giving Kurama a chance to say much of anything.

Kurama smiled at the human’s enthusiasm that was until his curiosity of the odd human hiding behind him got the better of him. He cleared his throat and looked past Kuwabara. “We can talk later, Kuwabara. You must introduce me to your lady friend,” he said, frowning as he watched the girl tried even harder to use Kuwabara as a shield.

Kuwabara smiled and grabbed her hand, pulling her in front of him. “I’m sorry. Kurama, meet Tokashi Aki, a very special friend of mine. Aki this is Kurama, I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about him.”

He gave her a slight push forward.

Aki raised her head to look at Kurama’s face as she reached her hand out to his. “Hello, Kurama. I’ve heard some much about you and I’m glad to finally meet you.”

Kurama smirked and took her hand. “The pleasure is all mine, of course. Any woman Kuwabara would pick out would have to be the pick of the litter,” he said, watching her face grow darker with her blush.

Kuwabara laughed. “What the hell are you talking about, Kurama. I didn’t pick out Aki. She is my tutor and on of my very best friends. Hell, I spend more time with her than I do with Urameshi.”

Aki blushed even darker and Kurama felt like a complete asshole. “I’m sorry . . . I didn’t realize. Well, any friend of Kuwabara’s is a friend of mine,” he mumbled, pulling his hand away and taking his seat again.

Kuwabara and Aki followed in suit. “I am pretending to be Aki’s boyfriend to give her protection. She is just to fragile,” Kuwabara said to Kurama, pulling out his book.

Kurama smirked. “I can see your point,” he mumbled and the professor ended their discussion by starting class.

Hiei was bored. No that was an understatement. He was bored hours ago, now he was beyond bored. He finished training hours ago and now had nothing to do or kill in this boring world. He would go see the fox but he was in class. Yusuke was out of the question because he had already went there and was almost blinded for seeing too much. Yusuke really needed to buy some curtains. He went to watch the oaf sleep but Shizuru informed him through the kitchen window that Kuwabara was in school. Normally that was how he passed the time, watching the object of his affection. He sighed trying to get comfortable in his tree but then his stomach growled. Suddenly an idea came to mind. Maybe he should have the fox by him lunch and with that he flitted away towards that thing the others called an university.

************************************************

Kuwabara laughed along with Kurama as they walked out of the cafeteria with their lunch in tow. Aki followed behind them, her eyes finding her shoes interesting, again. “No, seriously, it actually happened. I swear on my honor code,” he finished, sitting down underneath a big oak tree that offered them complete privacy and started unwrapping his sandwiches.

Kurama chuckled again and sat down as well. He looked up to see that Aki was still just standing there, looking around her as if searching for the nearest exit. He wasn’t the only one to notice, Kuwabara did as well.

“What the hell are you doing, Aki? Sit down and eat. You don’t have to go to work for another couple of hours,” he said, patting the ground beside him.

Aki blushed and looked away. “Maybe I should go. I don’t wish to intrude or anythi-“ she started as Kuwabara roughly pulled her down and into his lap.

He smirked, as she blushed even harder. “Eat. We want you here, right Kurama.”

Kurama smiled in agreement right before he felt a familiar energy in the air. ‘Oh shit, this could be bad,’ he thought as attempted to search for Hiei.

As Kuwabara helped Aki out of his lap, his head shot up as Hiei appeared out of nowhere. He started to say something until he realized that Hiei was pissed and he was looking right at Aki.

Hiei had never felt such anger before. This little human bitch was fucking with his mate. He was going to kill her. “Who the fuck are you and why are you all over my mate?” he demanded as he walked towards her, his eyes burning with their hatred.

Kuwabara was speechless and Kurama moaned with dread. “Hiei, back off,” he started until he realized that things were already out of control.

Hiei had reached to human girl and jerked her off the ground. “I asked you a question. You would be wise to answer,” he told her, shaking her roughly by her arms.

Kurama watched Hiei shake Aki, watched as her head was snapped back and forth by Hiei’s shear force, knowing that he was about to snap the girl’s neck. He looked at Kuwabara who was just staring into space as if he had just imagined the whole scene. Kurama jumped up and quickly took Aki into his arms, effectively breaking Hiei’s hold and shielding her with his body. She was trembling and looked to be even more shocked than Kuwabara.

Hiei growled in frustration. Why the baka fox was stopping him, he did not know nor did he care. He just wanted blood, that girl’s blood, and Kurama was in the way. “Fox, I’ll only warn you once. Move the fuck out of my way!” Hiei growled at him and then made a grab for Aki.

Kurama easily dodged, Hiei’s anger had made him clumsy. He kicked an empty water bottle that fate had placed at his feet at Kuwabara’s head. The hit knocked Kuwabara out of his daze and he turned towards Kurama. “What the hell was that?” he yelled, rubbing his bruised forehead.

Kurama glared at him before replying. “If you would be so kind as to stop him. He is trying to kill Aki, jackass.” He said, moving out of the way of another of Hiei’s attacks.

Kuwabara, finally seeing the situation, stood up and grabbed Hiei from behind. “Calm down, Hiei,” he whispered into his ear.

Hearing the sound of Kuwabara’s voice and feeling his arms around him caused Hiei to snap out of his rage. He looked up into the eyes he adored and felt all of his tension fade.

Kuwabara smiled. “I think we need to talk,” he mumbled, letting go of Hiei.

Hiei smirked back. “Yes it seems as though we do.”

Kurama rolled his eyes back and looked down at Aki, who was clutching the front of his shirt tightly. He cleared his throat to get the two lovebirds attention. “I hope you realize that you are not leaving me to explain all of this,” he informed them when they turned around to face him.

Kuwabara looked down at Aki and he paled. “Oh shit, I’m so sorry. I completely forgot about you, Aki.” He rushed to her as she finally released Kurama. Hiei growled at him in the background and Kuwabara turned and glared at him. “Back off shorty. You probably scared the shit out of her.”

Aki looked at the three males that had her cornered, two with looks of concern and the other a look of indifference. She gave them a shaky smile. “It is okay. You don’t have to explain anything. Hiei is just a demon,” she said, acting as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
