Chapter 4: Unfortunate Events
*****
Friday classes were always the worst. The professors had the same strange ideas that because it was the weekend that everyone was free to do all the homework in the world. “Good afternoon, Kurama,” the aquamarine haired girl bowed to the much taller boy.
“Um, good afternoon to you, too. Please don’t think me to be rude, but what are you doing here?”
“Oh, um, Hiei asked me to come over, he’s making us something to eat right now even though I told him I wasn’t hungry.”
“I think that’s his way of getting out of tough situations, he loses himself in cooking. He did it once right after dinner and we got into a fight about doing the dishes… it just led to more problems at the time, but it was rather funny to watch.”
Yukina giggled softly, “Oh, I guess that makes sense. You said that he works in a restaurant, right?”
“Yes, he’s one of their best chefs right now.”
“Wow, that’s impressive,” she nodded.
“Yes, well... um… have you two figured anything out?” he tried to hide the rage that was seething out of every corner of his physical being.
“We figured out that we are related. I mean it is kind of hard not to notice that our eyes are the same color. Not too many people have red eyes,” she smiled sweetly.
“Um, yeah, right,” he felt completely relieved. “What?” he heard Hiei’s chuckle from the doorway, and saw his lover laughing at him.
“You’re so cute when you’re jealous,” he smirked.
“I was not jealous,” Kurama pouted.
“Yes you were,” Hiei approached, wrapping his arms around Kurama's waist, and pulling him closer, resting his cheek on the on the other boy’s chest.
“Okay, maybe a little,” Kurama smiled, nuzzling the spiky black hair, but Hiei just stared up at him, “okay, okay, a lot, are you happy now? I was really jealous.”
“Hn,” Hiei smirked, giving Kurama a chaste kiss before returning to the kitchen.
“You two are so cute,” Yukina giggled, which made Kurama laugh as well.
“Wait a minute,” Yukina chewed on the chicken cordon bleu that Hiei had made for them, “this taste like the chicken that they use at La Jacque Courtier’s restaurant, is that where you work?”
“Yes, how did you know?” Kurama answered for Hiei.
“That’s where Keiko, you remember her, right? Yusuke’s girlfriend? Well her father is the owner.”
“Mr. Yukimura? He’s nice, he’s the one who taught me to cook, and gives us some free food every now and then, and I think I’ve met Keiko once or twice. Brown hair and eyes? Average height? She comes in with a greasy haired punk every now and then who has a big mouth.”
“Yes that’s her and Yusuke, what a small world,” Yukina giggled.
“Hn,” Hiei shrugged.
“She’s very nice, and the only one who can really keep Yusuke in order,” Kurama explained.
“What’s Yusuke like?”
“Um,” Kurama thought a little bit as to how to explain the other boy, “he’s sort of like the skinnier boy that was in your gang.”
“Kurama,” Hiei hissed under his breath, glaring at the taller boy, making Kurama wince.
Not knowing what exactly it is that he had said wrong, he kept quiet through out the rest of the meal.
After Yukina left, Kurama got ready for bed without a word to Hiei, who was watching the news, and went to sleep.
Later that night, Kurama awoke when Hiei climbed into bed with him, kissing him on the cheek, but still feeling a little hurt, Kurama pulled away, but pretended to be asleep as he rolled away from the smaller boy, leaving his back to him.
“Kurama,” Hiei growled, pulling the redhead on to his back and kissing him softly on the lips. “Kurama, you’re not sleeping.”
Silently, Kurama opened his large emerald eyes.
“What the hell is wrong with you?”
“Hiei,” Kurama hissed under his breath, giving him the same venomous voice Hiei had given him earlier. The spiky haired boy stared at him with wide surprised crimson eyes.
“Kurama,” Hiei kissed Kurama gently on the cheek, “You know I didn’t mean anything by it.”
“Hmph,” the boy tried to roll away, but Hiei kept a firm grip on his lover, and straddled his hips.
“Kurama,” the deep voice almost purred as he nuzzled the pale neck, “Kurama.”
“Hmph,” Kurama pulled away.
“What the fuck?!”
“Why are you so embarrassed about what you are?”
“Because…”
“Hiei, I love you for everything that you are and were. Why can’t you trust that Yukina will love you for the same things?”
“She doesn’t need to know, Fox. What business is it of your about what she knows about me?”
Shaking his head, Kurama pulled away again.
“Kurama,” Hiei growled.
“I thought I was apart of you, but I guess I was wrong.”
“Kurama,” He grabbed the thin wrist and pulled him back on to the bed, “you were a whore, do you want everyone to know about that?”
“There’s a difference between being a punk and selling your body as a sex toy in hopes of living another day,” Kurama's voice had never been so low before.
“It doesn’t bother me,” Hiei met Kurama's eyes.
“It did when I was still one.”
“That was because I don’t want to share you with those bastards,” Hiei wrapped his arms around the slim waist.
“I just don’t see what it is that you’re so embarrassed about.”
“Yukina… she’s so innocent and sweet… she doesn’t need to know the mistakes that I made, okay?”
“Isn’t it through your gang that we even met? Was that a mistake, too?”
“Kurama, why are you trying to start a fight with me?”
“I’m not, I just want to know what it is that you think about me.”
“Kurama,” Hiei growled, “you know how I feel about you. Why would I be with you if I didn’t love you?”
“It’s just hard to see us together after a few years. I’ve never had a long relationship, and I’m… I’m afraid that when I need you, you’ll already be bored of me…” tears stung at the back of Kurama's eyes.
“Kurama,” was all Hiei could manage, he wanted to tell Kurama that he would love him forever, that he would never leave him, but it all sounded so corny and fake whenever he thought of what to say, so he just held the redhead closer to his body, nuzzling into his chest comfortably.
The ex-whore just laid back down on the bed, tears still spilling down his cheeks as the two eventually fell asleep in one another’s arms. He hated that Hiei could do this to him. He had never cried before Hiei, but once they were together his insides seemed to turn to jelly, and he easily transformed into a hormonal wimp with too many tears to cry.
*****
Hiei was the first to wake up. He had never needed an alarm clock to get him up, and continue on with that tradition even if a certain redhead liked to keep him up after midnight. Kissing his lover’s cheek, Hiei wiped away the last evidences of the dried tears.
Leaving his lover some breakfast before running off to work, Hiei felt a strain in his chest. Something bad was going to happen today. He just didn’t know what it was. He took one last look at his lover before walking out for work.
‘Alone,’ Kurama thought as he woke up. He looked at the meal Hiei had prepared for him, but didn’t feel very hungry, and put it in the fridge for later. It was the weekend so he had no school, and he had already finished his homework in hopes that he and Hiei might get one day off together just for the two of them, but it was clear that that wouldn’t happen for a very long time… if ever…
He had never thought that he would actually fall in love until he met the mysterious, brooding teenager. Now he was almost starting to wish that he never knew this pain even if it meant never knowing the joy. At least before, he could pretend that there was nothing better. That was how he lived… unemotional and unattached to anyone or thing.
“Hiei,” he felt tears well up in his eyes, as he picked up the fox doll Hiei had won for him on their first date almost a year ago. He fell to the bed and didn’t move until around three in the afternoon, when h decided to go see his lover and prove to himself that he was just being paranoid about everything. Hiei still loved him no matter what he told or hadn’t told Yukina, Hiei would always love him.
*****
“Actually the bar called and asked for him to fill in early for one of the tenders. They had gotten sick, so we let him go.”
“Oh… okay, thank you,” Kurama bowed to Keiko’s father before rushing over to the bar.
It had been easy enough to get into the place, the bouncer nearly begged him to actually come in if he gave him a little kiss, which of course he refused, but he was still allowed entrance. “Hiei!” he nearly squealed as he saw his lover serving drinks at the rambunctious bar.
“K-Kurama, what are you doing here?” his eyes went wide.
“What do you mean? I wanted to see you of course,” he smiled, leaning over the counter to kiss the shorter boy.
“Not here,” Hiei pulled away quickly, feeling his heart break at what he saw reflected in those large emerald eyes, “Wait, Kurama…”
“No, it’s fine… I’ll just see you when you get home…” his soft voice broke as he was easily lost in the energetic crowds.
“Kurama! Shit,” he couldn’t just leave. Their finances couldn’t take it if he lost this job. He would make up after work… get Kurama's gift early.
*****
“Kurama?” he found the apartment devoid of all life, Youko was probably out prowling the alley ways again, but Kurama… where else would Kurama be? The library? No, his homework was all finished, and as much of a nerd Kurama truly was, he wouldn’t hide in a library. The park… no, it was late, and Kurama knew better than that… Where the fuck could he have gone?
The cell phone, they had just recently opted for cell phones instead of a land line for emergencies only of course, but Hiei couldn’t really think of more of an emergency than Kurama missing.
“Hello?”
“Who the fuck is this?” Hiei demanded.
“You’re the one who called us.”
“Who is us?”
“Look, Kurama's in the shower right now, I’ll tell him that you called.”
Hiei’s heart was pounding like crazy. This couldn’t be true… no, Kurama wouldn’t do that to him. He stood completely frozen in the middle of the room before crushing the flowers, and tearing them to pieces, scattering them everywhere in a disarray of anger.
Two hours passed before a sound at the door finally roused the short teen, he had been trying to calm his heart the entire time.
“Ow,” a soft sob came from the door, the lights were off… “Guess he went to bed,” a soft voice whispered before there was a thump as the tall figure fell to the ground.
“Kurama!”
“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…” the redhead whimpered.
His face was completely bruised, and he was wearing someone else’s clothing. Tears ran down either cheek.
“I was… I was cornered… I’m so sorry… I couldn’t fight them all…”
“Shh,” Hiei slowly rocked his lover, “It’s okay. You’ll be fine…”
“No we won’t.”
“We?”
“You hate me,” he sobbed uncontrollably into Hiei’s shirt.
“I don’t hate you,” his voice choked, “I don’t. I love you so much. Please, stop crying.”
“I love you Hiei.”
“I know, shh, it’s okay. Please, please just don’t cry. You’re alright.”
“No,” he muttered.
“Hush, calm down,” he finally maintained control of his emotions once more.
“I love you Hiei.”
“Yes, I know. I love you, too.”
“I love you so much.”
“Don’t talk,” he stroked the crimson hair, which smelled of a different shampoo than the one that they had in the bathroom. He didn’t like it at all. He had to get rid of it. The smell had to go. “You need a bath.”
Kurama simply nodded, barely aware of his surroundings.
Lifting the much taller form without the slightest problem, and carried his lover into the bathroom, sitting them on the side of the bathtub, and turned the knobs so the water filled the somewhat roomy tub while Hiei began to undress Kurama from the stranger’s clothing. Growls and threats escaped his lips as he opened the large plaid shirt revealing bruises and a few burn marks from cigarettes.
“Shh,” he wiped away the crystal tears that continued to fall, “It’s alright.”
“Hiei,” Kurama suddenly lunged to hold tightly to the spiky haired boy’s chest, burying his face in the smooth neck as sobs wracked his body once more.
“Look at me,” he wrapped his arms around the slim figure, “Look at me,” the redhead finally looked up into ruby eyes, “What did they do?”
“They… they forced me to…” he breathed heavily.
“Did they rape you?” the tightening in his chest became worse.
“Y…yes…” his tears had finally slowed, but he was having trouble breathing.
“Did they use condoms?” he asked quickly, slightly shaking his lover.
“Yes…”
“Okay,” he let out a small sigh of relief, at least there wouldn’t be any deathly consequences.
“Okay?” Kurama nearly shrieked.
“Hush, love, you’re going to be okay,” he kissed away the tears that were freshly spilling.
“No, I’m not!”
“I’ll make sure that you are!”
Kurama stared at the shorter boy, wide eyed, “Why?”
“Don’t do this, Kurama, you know that I love you. I will never leave you. There is nothing that can get me to leave you. Even if you want me to leave, I will never leave you.”
Kurama leaned in to kiss the thin lips softly, which Hiei accepted gladly, taking in the taste of his lover as he finished undressing him, and placing him in the warm water.
“Hiei,” he begged, “be with me.”
Nodding, he undressed quickly and slowly slid in behind Kurama, letting him lean against him and the two soaked in the water quietly while Hiei washed Kurama in their soap. The smell was comforting to the both of them. The soft rose scent drifted over them, allowing them to relax together, forgetting all the evil in the world.
“Hiei?”
“Hn.”
“You won’t leave me, right?”
He chuckled softly, “I never will. Even as a ghost, I’ll haunt you.”
“Don’t say things like that. If you’re a ghost that means your dead, and I’ll be here without you.”
“Hm,” Hiei buried his nose in Kurama's neck.
