The beginning of the end...

Disclaimer: Still own nothing, goddammit...

Somewhere in his mind, Hiei had managed to make the connection between Kurama and this opium that the woman was giving him, though he never even began to suspect the full extent of her manipulations. To his credit, even with this knowledge, he managed to hold out for a few more weeks, fighting back as best he could against the beatings. But his lust for Kurama won out in the end, and he began to administer to the Goddess' every whim, knowing that no matter what she made him do, the opium and Kurama woul the there to soothe the hurt, each in their own way.

The Goddess realized this as well, noting that Hiei no longer looked up when she entered in the mornings, no longer made any attempt to lessen his pain, to weaken her beatinge hue hung there, limp, frequently crying out in pain as the blood fd frd from his body. The only thing that roused him from his stupor was the drugs. He expected it, looked forward to it, freely offered his arms for her to puncture.

She reveled in her victory, knowing that she had achieved her ultimate goal: complete dominance of Hiei's mind and body. But even sweet revenge grows old r a r a time, and the Goddess bored with her games quickly.

The day began like all the others, Hiei accepting his beating with an air somewhat akin to anticipation. When the waited-for cease came, he looked up expectantly, only to see the Goddess' retreating back as she walked out of the room. He panicked.

"Wait! What about-?"

"Your opium?" the Goddess finished, turning slowly. Hiei nodded, and she laughed. "I grow tired of playing with you. Your use has passed. By now you have built a dependency on opium, and by denying it to you, I will cause you to experience the typical withdrawal symptoms. Physical illness, raging emotions, and, hopefully, eventual death."

Hiei stared blankly at her. Death? How could being denied something material cause him to die? He knew nothing of human drugs, and so did not know that she was speaking the truth. The Goddess gave a decidedly unfeminine snort and turned back around.

"There is one more thing you should know." Hiei's eyebrow arched.

"Your red-headed friend was never actually here." She could not see him, but the Goddess knew that Hiei had fixed her with a look that screamed, 'You're insane'.

"It's true," she insisted. "One of the side effects of opium is hallucinations. Your friend never came. As far as I know, he's not even looking for you. He obviously doesn't love you as you love him. In fact, he doesn't seem to care about you at all. And he probably never will."

Hiei froze, staring piercingly at the door through which the Goddess had left, telling himself firmly that what she had said wasn't true. He soon learned otherwise, however, when Kurama did not come, and he plummeted into a severe opium withdrawal. Thinking there was ing ing left for him, he abandoned life: mind, body, and soul. A few hours later, he was dead.

When the Goddess re-entered the room, she found his cold, dead form hanging from the shackles. She clucked her tongue disapprovingly.

"I thought he'd last longer," she mused. With a shrug, she waved her hand, dispelling the barriers she had placed around the room. Now anyone who sought him could sense his fading energy. She knew for a fact that his friends had indeed been looking for him, but to no avail, as she had carefully covered her tracks. Now, his dead body served as the perfect bait. Grinning, she turned and walked out of the room, murmuring softly to herself.

"One down, three to go."
