Chapter Three
Author’s Note
As per my last Author’s note, I still haven’t decided on what to do with the ending. I don’t even know how long this is going to be! However, this time, I actually have a clear idea of where this story is going, so it’ll actually finish this time, I hope.
By the way, I've decided that Kurama and Hiei will end up together in the end. I'm just not sure how I want to exactly do it yet. Cause, as far as I've got planned out, I've gotten until they reunite, not as lovers, but tentative 'friends' or something like it. ;D That much I have planned out in my head.
So with all my calculations in, I should be done with the story by chapter 30 at most......I think. Unless you guys have any plot twists you want me to kamikaze/ferret in, because I'm totally up to suggestions!
P.S. I think I'm terrible at portraying Mukuro. I was trying to make her seem a bit crueller and bitchier, but I don't think I'm succeeding. D;
Oh well! Enjoy chapter three!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hiei’s dark thoughts were stormy. At one point, Hiei had moved to sit at the window. Staring out the window, onto the dark makai scenery of Mukuro’s territory, Hiei sat on the perch Mukuro had added specifically for him when she kept coming in and seeing him sleeping on a perch and not the bed. Hiei kept both knees up, and wrapped his arms around his knees as he stared out the window.
Kurama always seemed to be the cause of his problems, whether it be directly or indirectly. Hiei tched and slowly, against his will, found himself sleeping, a very light sleep, but a sleep all the same.
Hiei’s eyes fluttered open hastily and he looked up at the male above him. Kurama! Hiei jerked to his feet, katana out and defensive at the ready. Kurama simply smiled and held his hands up, showing he was unarmed. He asked softly “What’s the matter Hiei?” HIei studied Kurama carefully, and after sheathing his katana again, he lay back down with his head in Kurama’s lap. Hiei kept his sword at the side, ready to fight in a heartbeat if he had to. HIei said softly, his voice still cool “Nothing’s wrong fox. Just had a bad dream.”
Kurama said nothing and let his lover lie back down with his head in Kurama’s lap. Kurama’s hands resumed stroking Hiei’s face and hair gently. As Kurama stroked, he listened to Hiei’s heartbeat evening out as Hiei relaxed again.
Hiei knew this was a dream, knew that if he woke up, this dream would fade and his fox would leave him. Hiei knew this was part dream, part memory, but all the same, it was his fox. Hiei listened to the familiar sound of Kurama’s even breathing and heartbeat. Even when Hiei came back from missions with Mukuro, he knew he was home the moment he was close to Kurama. Kurama’s smell, heartbeat, breathing was home to Hiei. Without Kurama, Hiei had no home.
Hiei jerked awake, startled out of the dream. More proof of his surprise was the drawn katana and his defensive stance. Hiei glared at the room, waiting for an unknown assailant. Seeing none, he sagged back down onto the ledge and with a “tch.” He ran a hand through his hair. Hiei was breaking apart. He drew his knees to his chest, and burying his face in his knees, he murmured softly “Fox.” For the first time in his life, Hiei wanted to cry. He could feel the drops of moisture pricking at the corners of his eyes. Hiei refused to cry. He wasn’t weak. He couldn’t cry. Forcing the tears back, Hiei’s gaze resumed peering out the window.
Hiei’s dark thoughts didn’t last long however, as there was a knock to the door of his apartments, interrupting his thoughts. Hiei took a few seconds to compose himself before he called coolly “Come in.” A groveling little imp came in, quietly dragging itself towards Hiei. Prostrating itself at Hiei’s feet in a subservient manner, it whimpered “General Hiei, M-Mukuro-sama has requested your presence.” Hiei tched in response and said “Very well then.” The simpering imp gave a low sweeping bow and scampered out, fearful for it’s’ life. It knew of Hiei’s wrath, and what his wrath could do to an unfortunate demon caught in Hiei’s path.
After a few minutes of waiting, Hiei got to his feet, and left his apartments, with a flick of his cloak. Katana had been tucked away carefully at his hip with the belt loop. Hiei walked down the labyrinth of hallways and tunnels that made up Mukuro’s castle. When he finally came to a stop and a brown, non-descript wooden door, he opened the door and came in. Hiei didn’t bother knocking because Mukuro knew he was there so there was no point in pleasantries. Hiei shut the door behind him, expression blank at the scene before him.
Mukuro sat on her bed, a giant pillow naked, with one of her pets at her feet. Her pet of choice this week it seemed was a male demon of a remote shadow tribe that hardly left their villages except for assassinations. The male had skin dark as night with long black hair that shimmered purple. As was Mukuro’s way, she had him naked at her feet. She gave Hiei a knowing look as if she was saying that she knew about Hiei’s former relationship with Kurama. That knowing look pissed Hiei off. Giving Mukuro a death glare, one that would chill most demons and people, Mukuro simply ignored it. She was used to her subordinate’s temper by now and never had reason to fear it.
Ignoring her subordinate, Mukuro spoke “Hiei, so good of you to respond to my call.” Hiei growled “Hn.” Continuing on, Mukuro said “I received news of Kurama’s engagement to a human girl.” Hiei’s body went rigid, and his gaze darker. Suspicions confirmed on both end, Mukuro continued talking “As a good friend of his, I understand you are rather thrilled with this.” Hiei didn’t look away, but his ruby red eyes which glowed with hatred showed just how upset Mukuro was getting him. Mukuro, unfazed by Hiei’s rage, continued “Which is why, when I received word that the wedding was in two months, I thought that you would like to be there.” Hiei’s body twitched. He said stiffly “I have no interest in being there for the two months.”
Mukuro snickered; she delighted in tormenting her subordinate a bit. His reactions were interesting. Mukuro said, not even bothering to hide her smugness “Well Hiei, what I was going to tell you was that I’m giving you a two month vacation in the ningenkai.” Holding up her hand to prevent Hiei from responding, she continued “It’s an order. I do not want you in my line of sight for two months.” Hiei glared, and was gone from the room without a sound, leaving behind a smug Mukuro at having rattled her subordinate. She knew that he was probably fuming inside. She had forced an almost confession out of her subordinate, and had seen him pissed. That had amused her greatly. Now, she would just have to see what her subordinate would be like when he came back.
Hopefully his temper was better- or not. Mukuro fell silent as she felt a rather large explosion rock her castle. She didn’t even bother getting up, she’d felt the rise in Hiei’s Ki, heard the black dragon roar as it destroyed nearly a quarter of her castle due to its’ master’s rage. Hiei, seeming to have calmed down, took off from the castle, leaving a big gaping hole in his wake. Meanwhile all of Mukuro’s servants were busy fixing the damage as Mukuro had ordered, and giving her a report on the damage.
It didn’t take long for Hiei to find the portal to human world. He stood there staring at the portal with the look of utmost loathing on his face before he leaped through the portal.
