Ch. 3

Hiei sits on a branch high in a tree, deep in the forest. He thinks about his life, and the people in it... Kurama... Yusuke... Both people who would help him if he needed help, shelter him if he needed shelter. Despite his cold exterior, Hiei really does have a wonderful heart, it just has layers of dried blood protecting it, from when it had been bled before.

Hiei sighs. He should really be showing them his true colors in the limited time he has around his (friends?) teammates. Hiei lays and thinks of how he will say good bye to each person, and what he'll say.

After a few hours, Hiei falls asleep. When he wakes up the next day, his head is clear and he knows what to say. He looks around this forest which has been his home for much time and then heads in the direction of the city.

Kurama and Yusuke and Kaiko are sitting a table in the food court of the mall. Kuwabara's in the arcade playing video games. Yusuke sighs. Kurama sighs. Kiako sighs. "Will you two stop doing that?" She asks. "It's not making any of us feel any better."

Kurama swirls his milkshake with his straw. "How well did any of us even know Hiei? He's always been so aloof, such a mystery..."

Yusuke picks another pepperoni off of his pizza slice. "I dont know. I barely knew him, all I know is that he was a thief... and a demon."

Hiei appears in the fourth chair. (Kuwabara's but he's not exactly there...) They look at him. Kaiko jumps. (out of suprise) "Oh, Hiei!" She exclaims "You've got to stop doing that!" (As of- he's done this before)
"Hn. Well, you won't have to worry about it once Im dead." He says, his crimson eyes burning into her. She looks away, embarrassed. "I, er, well..."
Yusuke puts an arm around her. "Hiei, dont be so hard on her. She's been trying to lighten the mood all day."
Hiei sighs. "Whatever." 'This is not going the way I expected.... ' He thinks. "Kaiko... I... am sorry."
They all stare at him. "What did you say?" Yusuke asks. Kaiko nods, "Thank you, Hiei."

Hiei turns to Yusuke. "Can I talk to you?"
"Sure. Lets go take a walk or something." Yusuke stands up and pushes his chair in. Hiei does likewise. They walk off, waiting to talk until out of earshot of the others.

Once they get a few blocks away Yusuke asks Hiei what he wants to say.
"Yusuke, well, thanks for always being there. I could have done it on my own, but..." Hiei shifts nervously on his feet.
"I understand. Hiei, It means a lot to me to hear you say that. I'm glad we met." Yusuke says, putting a hand on Hiei's shoulder.
"Yeah, well dont think I forgot the revenge I promised you. Ill get you yet."
"Of course you will Hiei." Yusuke hugs Hiei. "Im gonna miss you."
"Thanks," Hiei says, looking at the ground. "I'll miss you too."

For a few moments they just stand there, looking at the ground.
"Hiei?" Yusuke asks.
Hiei looks up. "Yes?"
"You're really great, but how come you never tell any of us anything about your life? We barely know anything about you."
"Hn, my life just... isn't that interesting."
"Well. If you ever need anything, you can come to me."
"Thank you, Yusuke." Hiei finishes.

"Did you have anything else to say to me?" Yusuke asks.
"No. Let's go back."

Yusuke nods and they walk back to the others slowly, enjoying being near each other.

When they get back Hiei sits back in Kuwabara's chair, since he's still off playing video games.

"Kaiko..." Hiei says and Kaiko looks up at him.
"What, Hiei?"
"Well," He looks away. "I have been sort of rude to you. I regret that..."
She smiles, showing her pearly white teeth. Then she hugs Hiei. "Oh! Thanks! You are SO sweet!!!!"
Hiei's eyes widen in suprise and he looks down at her.
"What do you think you're doing?" He asks.

Kurama and Yusuke smile at each other.

"Im hugging you, of course!" She squeezes him harder.
"Okay, okay, you can let go now." He pulls her off. He has a faint smile playing at his lips.

"Anyway, now that that's done." Hiei faces Kurama. "I would like to speak with you alone also."
Kurama nods and they get up to leave.

Once they get out of ear shot, Kurama looks at Hiei. "I know you want to say your good-byes to me, but I dont think you should. Im not going to let you die. I know I can stop it!"
Hiei sighs and puts a hand on his shoulder.
"No, Kurama. Im not going to survive. It's fate."
Kurama shakes his head. "It isnt! Dont worry. You wont die."
Hiei growls. "Kurama, stop acting like an idoit! You know as well as I do that I'll die, and that's it. You cannot save me, so dont even waste your time thinking about it."
"Hmpf," Kurama looks at the ground, "Hiei, I will save you." He says confidently. Then he runs off.

"Kurama!" Hiei takes a few steps in the direction Kurama went, but stops, and decides Kurama would rather be alone.

Kurama runs back to his house and shuffles the papers on his desk, on which he has plans written to save Hiei. "Hiei," Kurama says to himself, "I will save you, I will." And with that, he goes back to perfecting his plans.

(Author- Well, Ch. 3 is finally done. What do you people think? Review it already! Also the next chapter or the one after that will probably be the last. This is a short story)
