Scene 24
Scene 24 ---------- The Waterfall Meadow
* Hiei opens his eyes and looks toward the waterfall.
(#) Hiei- It’s time now, Sarista.
* He looks down when he feels River climb into his lap.
River- Time?
* Hiei quirks an eyebrow at her. He then lifts his arms to embrace her. She continues meeting his eyes, completely unafraid. Hiei again notices the dullness in their red depths.
Hiei- You remind me so much of myself at your age.
* One of his hands moves up into her bushy upsurge of coal black hair. Only now does he notice the dark aqua highlights that catch the afternoon sun.
Hiei- But you’ll not have such a hard life. I assure you, daughter.
* River tilts her head, then looks toward the treeline. Hiei looks to watch Sarista and Troiyoku, carrying Gamaru’s surviving son, approach them.
Hiei- I’m only doing this.. to spare their lives.. Not to enslave them.
* Sarista and Troi both nod their understanding. Sensing that they both also understand his internal anguish that this decision causes him, Hiei looks back down at River.
Hiei- River, I’m your Father.. You’re young, so I know that you’re not going to understand why I’m doing this.
River- I trust you, Daddy.
* Hiei hesitates, then nods. He tightens his hold in her hair and leans her head to the right, closing his eyes.
Hiei- You belong to me,.. daughter.
River- Hn.
* Hiei swallows hard, then lowers his head. He hears her cry out briefly when he sinks his fangs into the left side of her neck, even though he does so as gently as he can. After only a brief pause to gather himself, Hiei surges his energy into the mark to complete the ritual. River struggles slightly, then relaxes in his arms and he pulls back to check her. She’s already unconscious, her age aiding in helping her to succomb to the resulting hibernation more readily. Hiei then settles her over into Sarista’s arms. He briefly meets her eyes, then turns to take the tiny baby boy from Troiyoku. The apparition feels how weak and frail the infant is as he cradles him in his hands. When he pushes aside his trepidation, Hiei lifts his son closer to his face.
Hiei- Tell me your name, son.
* It takes several moments before Hiei hears the weak answer reach his mind. The Koorime nods and half glances toward Sarista and Troiyoku.
Hiei- He says that his.. carrier desired to name him Higama.. Since he was the oldest.. So that is what his name is.
Troiyoku- Hai.
* Sarista nods her agreeance. Hiei holds the boy out so he can look at him.
Hiei- I’m your Father, Higama.. Look at me, son.
* After a couple blinks Higama opens his eyes. Their orangish-red color is much duller than River’s was.
Hiei- You belong to me, son.. From this moment on you will become stronger.. Someday I hope you’ll understand why I had to do this.
* Knowing that the boy is too young to answer, Hiei foregoes waiting for the usual response and lowers his face to nuzzle the left side of Higama’s neck. When he finally finds the weak pulse he inserts his fangs in as gently as he had with River. He closes his eyes and tightens his hold when the small boy squirms and begins to give his squeaking cries. But the struggle is even briefer than River’s was. Hiei finally pulls back and Higama’s head lulls backward until Hiei braces it. For several tense moments he stares at his son until the baby finally takes a deep breath. Hiei relaxes and embraces him gently against his chest. He concentrates on the baby for a few more moments until he’s fully assured that he’s breathing well. Another son that he never thought possible for him to have. Another life to protect. Hiei nods when a new realization dawns on him.
Hiei- Hn.. Now I have to continue this path.
* He looks aside at his two mates.
Hiei- I have to live.. so they can.. So all of you can continue to live.
* Sarista nods. Hiei allows Troiyoku to take Higama back, then looks away toward the waterfall again. His mission is now clearer than it ever was before. He must continue to.. dominate.

And this wraps up this sequel. The last word should give you a clue to the title of the next sequel on the horizon. A new enemy lurks there, too. Will Hiei survive the next challenge? Hope you all continue to read to find out. I’m interested in knowing your thoughts about Hiei having to mark these two children. I can promise that there won’t be no heavy stuff involving these two, though.
On a side note, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you out there that celebrate it!! I’ll get the next sequel out after my celebrating is over. Probably Saturday or next Monday. Should give you some time to catch up on the story if you need to. :o) Now, go gobble that Turkey like there’s never gonna be anymore (yeah, right, snort laugh snort).
