Scene 21
Don't forget, the link to this series' website is on my profile page. I update it with each new passing 'Day' we cover during the course of the story.
Sorry if losing Gamaru made you sad, but that's the way my muse went. Trust me, it won't be the last time. Demon World is a cruel place, usually. But hey, there's some good things a-happenin' too. :o)

Scene 21 ----------------- Early The Next Morning
* When Hiei wakes up it isn’t quite light, yet. He rolls himself off of Minoro and lays on his back a moment. The only sound he hears is Minoro’s half-asleep incoherant murmurring. The Koorime sits up, looks around the clearing, and notices the small pile of little bodies nearby. He stands and goes over to look down at his children. He sighs quietly as he examines them, ‘Hn. They are definitely.. mine.’ He turns and pulls himself away from that line of thought and notices that River is sleeping by herself in the natural alcove. This puzzles him, but he feels himself being drawn, instead, toward the cave. When he enters he pauses to look around. It looks as if some kind of attack took place near Silis’ bed. His nose catches the still-lingering scent of blood in the large space as he studies his sleeping females. They must have been exhausted to not even have noticed his presence, yet. Then his eyes fall on Gamaru. Something twinges in his chest as he goes over to check him. A feeling he's becoming all too familiar with, guilt. His suspecions are proven as he finds the boy’s body cold and unresponsive. He dwells for a moment on some memories of the fiesty subordinate. But then he feels eyes on him and looks up to meet Sarista’s eyes. He can tell by her expression that she knows.
Hiei- I was.. too late.
* Sarista looks toward Silis’ nest. Hiei goes over to sit down beside her.
Hiei- I’ll give him a proper..
Sarista- He.. had to go.. He was suffering.. I understand that you wouldn’t.. know..
Hiei- Do you think me to be so callous?
* Sarista slowly shakes her head. Hiei recognizes the same timid manner from her that he got from Minoro. He reacts by lifting his warded hand to make her meet his eyes.
Hiei- You’re still my Alpha Female, ‘Ris.. I even sent Sylk back to her own Territory to prevent any..
* Sarista tilts her head.
Sarista- So you didn’t think I could keep my position?
Hiei- Right now? After giving birth, yourself, not too long ago? No.
* Sarista relaxes and nods, accepting his concern for her as it’s meant. She then allows Hiei to lean and give her a deep, desirous kiss. The Koorime literally has to push himself away from her.
Hiei- You need more rest.. When did he finish?
Sarista- Not long ago.. Delivering one baby is hard enough for a male.. But three nearly took everything he could muster.. We’re all exhausted because we shared our energy with him to help him.
* Hiei looks toward the nest again.
Hiei- Is he okay, though?
Sarista- He’s weak.. Exhausted, too.. But Trinka and I were able to keep him with us.
* She looks toward Gamaru again.
Sarista- We were so.. busy with Silis that..
* Hiei shakes his head and draws her over against his chest when she sobs.
Hiei- No, ‘Ris.. His loss is my fault.. Not yours.
Sarista- Please, don’t..
Hiei- Koenma came last night.. I told him to keep his nose out of my business.
* Sarista pulls back to meet his eyes again.
Hiei- If I’m going to take control of this region I don’t want it said that I did so with Spirit World’s aide.
Sarista- Hiei,..
Hiei- Besides that.. The boy wanted to go.. He couldn’t deal with his loss.
* Sarista sighs and nods.
Sarista- We, of Fire heritage, are highly family oriented.. Usually. While most natural-based species of this region can cope with the loss of children without much remorse.. Because they’re used to such things as predation and survival of the fittest.. Elementals take the loss of a child much harder.
Hiei- Hn. Well, I told you that I wouldn’t prolong his suffering.
* Hiei looks toward Troiyoku’s nest.
Hiei- Will Troi be able to keep his only son alive?
* When Sarista doesn’t answer he looks at her again.
Hiei- Answer me.
Sarista- The.. only way his son will survive now.. is to be.. bonded.
* Hiei scowls.
Hiei- By Troi?
Sarista(Quietly)- No.
* Hiei looks back toward Troiyoku’s nest as realization begins to sink into his brain.
Sarista(Quietly)- Some promises are impossible to keep.. when circumstances change.
* She hides her face against him again. Hiei closes his eyes and tightens his embrace. His unwarded hand strokes her silky hair as he feels her go back to sleep.
