Why didn't I notice?

Author's note

Hey~! So this is my first, er second time I've posted a Yu Yu Hakusho story, but I don't know how well I'll do, but, uhhhh treat me nicely?

Story, Begin!

What can I do to make you understand?

Just how much you mean to me.

I know it's my fault, for never telling you.

That I love you.

I just never know the right words to say.

To tell you what you mean to me.

To tell you how much I treasure you.

How much I love you.

I should have told you.

I know that now.

But is this what you wanted?

To die this way?

As I sit here in front of your grave I smile

Graves are foolish Human things,

Ningen things.

Gods, I miss you.

I miss you so much.

I'm so sorry that I didn't tell you

I can only make up by coming by to visit.

I know you wouldn't have wanted a grave.

You probably wanted to let your body rot in the Makai

But I couldn't do that to you.

I couldn't stand knowing your body was being desecrated

By foolish, unworthy demons.

I had to have you near,

So that I can mourn your death

I'm still mourning,

Two years later.

I should have seen the signs

I was your closest friend,

The only one you trusted in the world.

I should have known you better than anyone else.

But I don't,

Because I didn't know enough to stop you.

I remember the last day I saw you.

You called me an idiot.

Before we parted, you said to me

"Fox, treasure the ningen life you lead.

It's stupid and weak, but you like it,

and that, is what counts.

Your humans die so quickly, that you don't

have time to treasure them."

I was stunned, not understanding what you meant,

I'd said thank you for your words of advice and went home.

The next day, I learned what your words truly meant.

We found you, gutted on your own sword.

It was a beautifully tragic way for you to die

It was honorable in the way you died.

Yet dishonorable for the way you left everyone behind.

And still I hear you say,

You want to end your life.

I wish you'd reached out to me for help

I would have helped.

You know I would have.

I find that it's harder to stop crying,

now that you're gone.

She hasn't been the same either.

She cries for you constantly you know.

This isn't what you wanted.

For her to cry endlessly for the brother she never knew.

You didn't want her to cry I know.

But you still caused her tears,

Why?

I cry for you too.

Did you know that?

I cried every day after for two months

I miss you so much.

I keep thinking about the day we buried you.

In the cold, hard ground.

The ground that doesn't know,

how to treasure a warrior of your strength,

your ability,

your honor,

your power.

So, I made your grave alive with a garden of plants.

I wanted to make sure you weren't lonely

I know you won't be,

but it would make me feel better.

I'm back at your grave again,

And I'm still sitting here.

Asking myself,

Why didn't I stop you?
