Arranged Love
Chapter 1
Puzzle Pieces
Mukuro was one of those demons that just didn't seem quite right. She was pitiless, ruthless, merciless, but always just. She tolerated no mistake, and rewarded all accomplishment. As long as her subordinates stayed on her good side, then life was good. Cross her, and life was short. These qualities in themselves were not uncommon in demons, and fairly common in demon lords. What was odd, the thing that just didn't seem to fit, was her tolerance of the lesser beings known as humans.
By all rights, the furless apes deserved no better than to be slaves to the superior demon race. Their lives were short, trivial and practically meaningless. They lived each day oblivious to the greater workings in the world, and apathetic to that oblivion. The authorities of the Spirit world however, took great measures to ensure the safety of the humans. Their concern also, was bewildering to most demon kind.
Gods were by nature the creators and masters of the living things in the human world, or so they claimed. Why would they go out of their way to ensure the safety of the humans, and the humans' spirits? The gods did little to hide their own personally low opinion of the race of men, but made great effort to facilitate its progression. A complex relationship a demon could never understand. Except it seemed, the demon lord Mukuro.
Mukuro, in her mangled, scarred and disfigured body ruled over a large part of the demon world. Hiei and Shigure, two of the most talented assassins called her master. Mukuro, in her days of death and destruction, pain and retribution, had come to realize why gods did not interfere with the mortal humans' lives. She respected that, and from that respect for the gods' decision, grew a respect for the race in question. She suspected that Raizen had guessed the same truth, and ruled his part of the demon world by that truth as well. His heir was born of the human world, and still had an attachment to it.
Her own heir had no such familiarity with the human race, and despised it in a way that was almost uncommon. She could guess the base of his hatred, as there was little about that dark emotion she did not understand. Mukuro's only concern was that he would learn too late what a danger it was to entertain hatred towards the inferior populous of the human world. Hiei was her best choice for an heir. Though he enjoyed the act of killing, he was more vicious than actually evil, unlike Shigure. Killing she could tolerate, wanton bloodlust she could not.
She had wandered the grounds of her fortress for many years pondering the fate of her heir and her kingdom. She neither feared nor welcomed death; a concept she had closely affiliated with throughout her long life. There was little use in fighting or embracing the inevitable, though the unseen future held a certain interest for her. She had been born in this time, in the body she had scarred to escape her horrid fate. She had grown in spirit and power, and now ruled her section of the demon world with patient apathy. There was nothing left in this life for her, but in the next life... She had nothing to lose by trying to change the future to suite her would-be reincarnation. Hiei was a key piece in her grand jigsaw plan.
As he was, he didn't quite fit however, and if he did not change of his own will to fit into her puzzle, centuries of her unpleasant existence would be wasted. In the past decades she had known him, he had changed little on his own. She finally took it upon herself to manipulate his shape to fit her plans. It was risky, though no more risky than letting him develop on his own.
Mukuro's silky white hands played over the smooth surface of her mirror of truth. Supposedly it was a shard of the genuine article that had beheld all things true and present on its grand surface before being shattered by the gods. She had little reason to doubt this, as her mirror not only showed what she asked of it, but any facet of that person upon request. She wondered if her next request would be a true test of its power.
"Show me," she rasped softly in her almost male voice. "Show me a human of pure soul," she continued to murmur softly. Light flickered and waned on the obsidian surface, and slowly ten or more images came into focus. Mukuro watched intently as the human shadows took shape, and exhaled sharply. All children! They would be of no use to her plans, yet for a moment she watched them. They had young and kind faces, and eyes that were full of curiosity. One day those eyes would drink in a ghastly act, and no longer could they reflect purity the same way. Perhaps pure was not what she was looking for after all, even if it could be found in a human of age.
She pondered over the qualities of the human race, and those of her heir. It had to be someone forgiving, patient, honest but clever. It would be preferable if they were appealing to the eye, but Hiei would have little care for outward appearance once the terms were set. The human would have to be strong enough to gain Hiei's respect, but humble enough to respect Hiei equally. Mukuro sat in silence for a long time wondering exactly how to phrase such a request. She doubted that in over a thousand years a human had been born with enough power to impress her prideful ward. Perhaps she would tone the request down a little bit. If this lesson didn't work, she could most probably come up with another, more effective means of changing his mind.
"Show me," she murmured again, "a human who can change the heart of Jaganshi Hiei." There was a pause and then as an after thought, "For the better." The obsidian mirror rumbled in almost a groan of pain, and Mukuro wondered if her request had been too much. Finally, the image of a boy flickered from its depths. No beauty by any standards, but physically functional for the task at hand. His soul glowed an almost blinding sheen of gold, which had to count for something. He might not be a pure human, but he was certainly noble enough in heart.
Mukuro summoned Shigure as she rifled through her desk. There was so much paperwork for a demon lord to go through, she doubted Hiei even thought of such a thing. Her former second in command entered just as she found the article she had been looking for: a stamp about the size of a man's fist with the exact replica of Hiei's seal on it. As she dipped it in the cobalt ink, she could sense Shigure's amusement.
"I believe you know what to do?" She ordered in her deadpan voice, offering Shigure the stamp and the shard of mirror. Studying his target, the pierced demon's amusement manifested itself in a less than good-natured grin.
"With pleasure," he purred, taking the stamp.
