About the comment of Deathprotecting those close to him= Kazuma doesn't have to die to be close to death. As a lover to Koenma, that would cosidered close, after all since Enma is the God of Death, his son, Koenma is the junior god of death. Also there is another take on it as well, Kazuma's spirit awareness, he's VERY aware of the ghosts and spirits, theres another type of being close to Death.
However I feel that being close to Koenma was what Shi was aluding to.

Any number that starts with "shi" is bad luck because is had something to do with death or "shingnami..." it's the pronounciation or something like that. I read it somewhere.
