Forever & Foralways My Kokaishi
As the students were leaving the classroom Shuichi waited outside the door for Kiren. When he saw his kokaishi coming he pushed himself away from the wall, “So, how did you do?” He asked curious if his love passed or failed. They didn’t get much studying done last night; they were too busy doing something else. Although they did get a majority of it done so he shouldn’t have done too bad.
“I just barely passed.” Kiren said with a frown as he walked next to Shuichi.
“But you passed.” Shuichi said trying to make his lover feel better.
“Yeah I know, I’m just going to have to do better next time.” Kiren said with a small smile. The look on Shuichi’s face made him want to take him in his arms and kiss him. He had to rein in his desire though because they were at school and in public. So he stayed his hand and lips and continued walking beside Shuichi.
They walked a little ways in silence until they reached the end of the school grounds. When they arrived at the gate Shuichi turned to look at Kiren. “My parents are still away on business and my brother asked if he could spend the weekend at his friends house, I told him that it was alright. You’re welcome to stay for the weekend, if it is alright with your parents.” He said with a hopeful smile.
“As much as I would like to Shuichi, I’m afraid my weekend’s booked. My parents and I are going out of town to visit some friends. We do it every year around this time. I’m really sorry Shuichi.” Kiren said a little hurt at having to turn down the offer. But then he got a thoughtful look on his face. “You know Shuichi, I’m sure my parents wouldn’t mind if I miss one trip. If I asked them nicely I’m sure they would let me stay, especially if they knew I would be staying with you.”
Shuichi looked into his eyes, saw the conflicting desires there and chose for him. As much as he wanted to have him all weekend alone he knew he could have Kiren next weekend and the weekend after that and many more. But this trip was an annual one, once a year. “It’s alright Kiren, you go with your parents. We can spend next weekend together. My parents don’t come back until next Monday, so we will have plenty of time together.” Shuichi said with a smile.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. You have fun alright, and I will see you Monday.”

Later that evening Kiren was in the kitchen helping his parents clean up after dinner. *Tonights dinner was actually halfway decent. I do believe moma is getting better. * He thought as he was drying off the dishes. He was putting away the dishes he finished drying off when his mother asked him the question he had been dreading all night.
“So Kiren, how did you do on your test today?”
Kiren paused in his task and cleared his throat, “I just barely passed.” He said with his head down. “But I will do much better next time, so don’t worry.” He said looking up with earnest look in his eyes.
“I know you will my son. You’re a smart boy.” His father said as he helped his son put away the rest of the dished. “If I may ask, where were you last night?” He asked continuing his task.
Kiren nearly dropped the plate he was in the process of putting away. “Uh, I was at a friend’s house. He was helping me study, it got late and I sorta crashed there.” He said a little hesitantly. “I’m sorry I didn’t call.”
“It’s alright son. We were just curious. Besides, you’re 16 years old now and as your father stated you’re a smart boy. Now, shower and get to bed. We’ve got to get an early start tomorrow so sleep well.”
“Yes moma.” He said and did just that. He had a feeling that he would be dreaming about Shuichi so he couldn’t wait to get to bed.

Shuichi didn’t feel like spending the weekend all by his-self so he asked Yusuke if he wanted to spend the weekend at his house. Yusuke said yes and even brought Kuwabara along. Shuichi didn’t mind. Hiei even made an appearance so it was a full house, which made Shuichi quite happy.
Shuichi arrived to school a little early that Monday morning hoping that Kiren would be there so he could spend a little time with him before class started. Just before the bell rang Shuichi got up and headed to his class. Kiren still hadn’t showed and he was starting to worry. The cause for that could be many things but he had a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach that he couldn’t seem to shake.
He sat down in his chair just as the bell rang. As the other students in his class were talking amongst themselves Shuichi just sat there deep in thought. The teacher came in and everyone hushed. She started reading off the names on the attendance sheet and when she came to Kiren’s name something one of the students said made his blood run cold.
“I don’t believe he will be in today. A friend of my mother is a nurse. She knows his family very well. His mother volunteers some of her time at the same hospital,” A female student said.
“Alright Niree get to the point.” One of her male friends said.
“Oh yes, right, sorry.” She said apologizing.
“Well?” the teacher asked wanting to know why Kiren who has never missed a day in his life is not here.
The girl looked down intently studying the hands clasped tightly in her lap tears welling up in her eyes. “He and his parents were in a bad car accident.”
“What?!!” Every kid plus the teacher cried. Only Shuichi was silent. His eyes were wide with shock and his face was as white as a ghost. He could feel his heart plummeting deep into the pit of his stomach.
“My father was the EMT said that Kiren’s father had died instantly. He told us that they found Kiren’s mother protecting him with her body and that she died just this morning at the same time Kiren fell into a coma.” She told them tears streaming down her face in a voice choked with tears.
“How bad is he?” The teacher asked shocked at everything Niree said.
“He’s in critical condition. The doctors don’t know how long…” Niree couldn’t finish she just broke down crying. Kiren had been one of her best friends since they were little littles; he was like a brother to her and now…no! He can’t die! He just can’t!
Shuichi’s heart was breaking and he started to feel sick. He remembered his last conversation with Kiren and nearly cried. If only he had asked him to stay the weekend with him maybe then…
“Shuichi?” It was the teacher, he looked up and the look on his face made her heart break. “Why don’t you go see the nurse. You don’t look well.”
“Yes ma’am.” Shuichi got up from his seat and nearly fell. He caught himself quickly his head still spinning and walked himself to the nurse’s office. He knew what he had to do.
He got himself excused from school and made his way to the hospital that Kiren was at. He arrived at the hospital and went to the room indicated by the nurse. When he went in a horrifying sight greeted him. His love, his kokaishi was in bad condition. His face was covered in cuts and lacerations. He had a large bandage across his left cheek and one on the right side of his forehead. Both of his arms were bandaged all the way up his arm to a little past his elbow. He had needles sticking out the top of his hands hooking him up to some medical devices. What they were used for he could only guess.
He had an oxygen mask covering his mouth that hooked to a machine that helped him breathe. He was hooked to another that monitored his heartbeat. It was slow, almost nonexistent but it was there and it was steady. Shuichi went up to his kokaishi pulled up a chair and sat down. He took one of his bandaged hands in the both of his and prayed to Inari, praying for his love not to depart this world for him to be strong and to live. He stayed there by his kokaishi’s side because that is where he belonged and where he was needed.
