Odd Boy Out
Chapter one: Fifth Member?

Renkai Tantei had been waiting at the docks for awhile and they were getting impatient. Well not all of them, just two of them. It seemed like hours for the two delinquents but in reality it was only thirty minutes.

“Ok, how long is he making us wait. Hey Yusuke! Are you sure you got us a fifth member?”

Genkai was getting annoyed as Kuwabarra asked the question for the 10th time. “Will you be quiet. It’s only been a few minutes.”

A static sound broke from the microphone at the dock. “The ship will be leaving in 10 minutes. With or without every team and a reminder to all contestants, you need all your fighters or you will be disqualified.” The announcer stressed out the the last words.

“Oh man! What are we gonna do?” Kuwabarra was getting angry and as a result took his anger out on Yusuke as he knock him over the head.

“Hey! I said Koenma was handling it, so don’t blame me. If there is any blaming going out it should be put on that damn toddler.” He fell forward as a great force hit his head.

Behind him stood Botan, oar in hand. “How dare you talk about him like that. You have no right.”

Yusuke got up from the floor rubbing the bump on his head, “Damn it Botan! You didn’t have to hit me.”

“Serves you right, hmp!”

A near by explosion cut Yusuke’s remark.

Botan looked toward the small pile of smoke forming nearby. “What was that?”

“I don’t know, lets go!” Yusuke said as he made a run for it, while the others followed.

“We shouldn’t get involved Urameshi, it’s none of our business,” Hiei said as he easily kept up with Yusuke.

“You really are heartless aren’t you? Hey I m talking to you Shrimp! Answer me!” Kuwabarra’s voice could be heard a mile away.

“Are you to stupid to know when someone is ignoring you.., wait you are.”

“Why you little,” Kuwabarra took a dive to tackle Hiei but only met dirt.

“You really are useless,” Hiei flitted away.

“Enough!” Genkai yelled as she looked toward a group of demons forming around something. “It seems someone is not where they belong.”

------------

“What are you doing here pretty one. It could be dangerous for you, especially when your all alone.” A ten footed demon said to a red headed teen standing in the middle of a circle of demons.

The red head smirked trying to cover up the fear he had. “I could ask you the same question with the exception of the pretty part.”

The demon frowned, “Argh! Your a smart mouth aren’t you!?! Well, I’ll teach you!”

“Stop! Why don’t you pick on someone your own size,” Yusuke yelled.

The demon turned around “What, someone like you?”

“No, you see I’m still shorter than you, someone like my friend here,” Yusuke patted Kuwabarra’s shoulder.

“Yusuke if you haven’t noticed, HE’S THE SIZE OF AN OAK TREE!”

“You can handle him. Go ahead and we’ll handle the others.”

Kuwabara hesitated for awhile until he made up his mind, “Alright.” He swung his energy sword around showing off, “ok, who wants a piece of me, Kuzama Kuwabarra.”

Yusuke and Genkai took on the others as Botan floated above the fighting so she wouldn’t get in the way, once in a while hitting a random demon with her oar. Hiei stood aside and quickly beheaded anyone who came near, almost cutting off Kuwabarra’s head in the process.

“Hey! Watch it. I know you have perfect aim but that was a little to close.

Hiei gave him one of his smirks. “What are you talking about, I missed.” Kuwabara turned away muttering about evil and short dumb fire demons. The pack of demons were quickly finished off.

Yusuke look for the red head who was the cause of it. He found him in the grip of a very ugly demon, holding him by the hair and a knife at his throat. “Let him go and we’ll let you live.”

The demon sneered “I have a better idea, why don’t I-”
He didn’t get to finish his sentence, the cause was a long sword sticking out of his chest which belonged to an annoyed fire demon. “You don’t negotiate with demons, Urameshi, that’s how you handle it,” he said indicating the body bleeding to death at his feet.

“Always trust you to handle it the bloody way,” Yusuke said as he stepped over the body, helping the red head up from the floor. “Are you alright?”

The red head pushed him away, quickly stepping away from his saviors. “I’m fine. And I didn’t ask for your help. I could of handled it by my self.”

Genkai stepped forward and looked at him and the mess around them. “Really? Because you sure didn’t look like you could handle it.” She received a frown from the red head as he bowed his head with embarrassment.

“Just leave me alone, I’m waiting for someone.” The red head quickly dismissed them.

Yusuke looked annoyed. “Look you could at least be grateful you know.” He stared at the red head’s eyes realizing the entrancing emerald green eyes held fear behind them. He hesitated for awhile. “....we could wait with you..”

“Urameshi. Don’t forget we have to be somewhere in about five minutes.” Hiei said.

The red headed teen looked hopeful but said it was okay. “It seems like you have somewhere important to be...don’t let me keep you from it.”

Botan looked toward her team of detectives and Genkai. “He can’t stay here it’s not safe and as spirit detectives you are responsible for the humans that are in danger because of demons.”

The red head frowned. “I don’t need protection from anything I can take care of-......wait. Your the spirit detectives?”

Yusuke answered with a yes as the red head pondered for a while.

“That’s not good at all....maybe he won’t care.....hmmmm somehow he will probably try to get out......but he won’t......I wonder.....hmmm.....”

“Ok what are you talking about,” Kuwabara asked still nervous about their problem about the fifth member.

He received a smile from the red headed teen. “Oh! sorry. My name is Kurama and I have a message for you...your fifth member for the dark tournament will be alittle late but he will be here.....I think.”

Kuwabarra freaked. “WHAT!?! What do you mean ‘you think’!?!

Kurama didn’t answered and sat down to wait. The team of four hoped their member would be here on time or things will take a turn for the worse.

An announcement broke the air announcing the boarding of the ship. “All board with ALL your members.”

“Damn it!” Yusuke got up from the floor. “Where the hell is-”

He was again for the third time that day knocked to the floor. Rubbing his head he mumbled a few curses. “Ok...who hit me?” He asked his fellow teammates, but they were all staring up at the tree.

A demon who appeared human, with the exceptions of the black wings sticking out of his back, stood their with a look that could kill. He wore black cloak, black pants, and black boots. His look was completed with a black hat he wore. If his look wasn’t menacing then the chain he kept swinging around was. At the end of the chain a sharp medium size knife was attached. “What I want to know is, was that necessary?”

The team looked at the demon with confusion. Genkai seemed the less affected, with the exception oh Hiei so she asked, “Was what really necessary?”

The demon ignored her as he jumped down the tree and walked past them. He stopped in front of a flushing Kurama trying not to smile. Before anyone could ask or do anything Kurama quickly made a run for it, heading towards the ship. The others followed worried for the red head as the demon yelled at him. Once on the boat the demon held Kurama while he tried to struggle out of the hold. “Oh come on, let me go.”

“Do you expect me to-...you don’t even belong here. Your suppose to be-”

“I know where I’m suppose to be. I’m suppose to be here. To make sure you don’t do anything stupid.”

“That’s where your wrong. Your the one who those all the stupid things, not me.”

The Renkai Tantei looked confused at the whole ordeal. “Ok who exactly are you?” Yusuke asked as the demon finally let go of the red head.

The demon glared at the black haired teen but answered his question. “The name is Kuronue. I’m your fifth member for this dark tournament.”

“Finally! We thought you weren’t coming.” Kuwabara slapped the demon’s back but before he even realized it his arm was pulled behind him as Kuronue snarled in his ear. “Don’t you ever touch me....or Kurama for that matter. Understand?”

“Understand.” Kuwabarra replied as the demon let him go.

The four fighters wanted to know if they could trust this demon but they didn’t want to give the demon a reason to betray them so they kept their mouths shut. Kurama stood to the side as Kuronue examined his team. His face showed no emotion but it was evident, the dark demon was not impressed. Kurama was interrupted from his thoughts as he began to cough quite harshly. And soon he felt the presence of Kuronue right beside him. The hands on his back trying to comfort him as he was lead to the rails of the ship. Blood slowly started to drip around his mouth. He moaned softly as his throat seemed to be burning.

Botan and the others watched with concern as they saw Kurama begin to throw up on the side of the boat. She approached them. “Is he okay?”

She received an angry glare from Kuronue. “He’s fine.” He snarled making her back off. Kuronue ignored everyone’s curious looks as he sat on the floor bringing his shorter companion into his lap. He reached into his coat pulling out a vile filled with a pink colored liquid. He handed it to Kurama after he pulled off the top. The red head quickly downed it and handed it back to Kuronue. He settled on his friend’s lap due to the potion’s side effect, dreariness. His eyelids shut close leaving him very vulnerable but he knew he was gonna be fine because of the protective demon keeping him safe.

Kuronue glared at his temporary teammates. “I suggest you occupy your time with something else beside starring.” The threat didn’t need to be said but they all heard it and gave the two some space heading for the other side of the ship.

The only one who didn’t seemed to be interested seemed to be Hiei. Even though he sat against the rail and seem oblivious he knew exactly what was going on around him. He heard and felt the red head’s illness. {Somethings seems off about him...} However, Hiei couldn’t put his finger on it so he tired to ignore it, but it kept on coming back. {The demon seems like he knows and probably dose.} He decided on trying to figure it out later but didn’t miss the soft whispers coming from the dark demon.

Kuronue softly patted Kurama’s head and sang his favorite song to him. He always told Kurama nigens were worthless creatures even though Kurama was a half one himself. But he made sure Kurama knew he was special, one of a kind. Slowly Kurama started to get him to eat human food and even listen to nigen music. He admitted some of the food tasted good and some of the music were good, especially the Rock kind.

Sister, I'm not much a poet, but a criminal
And you never had a chance
Love it, or leave it, you can't understand
A pretty face, but you do so carry on
And on and on

I wouldn't front the scene if you paid me
I'm just the way that the doctor made me
On and on and on and on
Love is the red of the rose on your coffin door
What's life like, bleeding on the floor, the floor, the floor

You'll never make me leave
I wear this on my sleeve
Give me a reason to believe

He sang softly knowing no one would here him. But he didn’t know anything about the fire demon; so he didn’t know Hiei would be able to here him. He just kept on singing to Kurama.

So give me all your poison
And give me all your pills
And give me all your hopeless hearts
And make me ill
You're running after something
That you'll never kill
If this is what you want
Then fire at will

Preach all you want but who's gonna save me
I keep a gun on the book that you gave me
Hallelujah, lock and load
Black is the kiss, the touch of the serpent son
It ain't the mark or the scar that makes you one
And run and run and run

You'll never make me leave
I wear this on my sleeve
Give me a reason to believe

So give me all your poison
And give me all your pills
And give me all your hopeless hearts
And make me ill
You're running after something
That you'll never kill
If this is what you want
Then fire at will

Kurama was special. He is and will always be special.

End of chapter one.
::smiles:: I hope someone liked it. Anyway what’s up with Kurama? What’s the relationship between Kurama and Kuronue? What are they hiding? And what is that something that Hiei thinks Kurama is hiding? Well read and find out. But don’t forget to tell me who you want Kurama with. It will really help me out. Any input will be appreciated.
