It’s For the Best


After the excruciating battle, the only thing he would like to do now is to see her again. But as he stood there and saw her, he stopped, watching her and smiling to himself.

I have missed my Keiko dearly. Her hair has grown longer… She is more beautiful than all my thoughts of her.

Keiko, sensing that someone was watching her turned around. Her eyes widened in surprise.

“Yusuke…”

She let out a cry of joy as she ran over to him and threw her arms around him. He did the same as he brought his arms around her in an embrace. Keiko hugged him tightly, tears pouring from her eyes. Oh how he missed the feel of her body close to him. He hugged her tightly.

“I am glad you’re safe… I was so worried about you, Yusuke.” she whispered against his chest.

“I am here now. I’m sorry if I made you worry… I love you very much.” He said against her hair. He was so glad he came back. He kissed her with all the emotions he felt. It felt so good to be alive.

Something in her moved. She freed herself from his embrace.

This isn’t easy for me, but I have to say it. He has to hear it… for the both of us.

“Yusuke...” She started. Yusuke looked at her, tenderly tucking a strand of her hair that was floating in her pretty face. She cleared her throat.

“Yusuke, I have something to tell you.”

Yusuke sensed something but couldn’t put his finger on it. He urged her to continue.

“I…I thought my feeling for you was strong enough, but it wasn’t. I uh… Things need to change for it to grow… it’s just that I don’t know if I can grow with you…”

He was stunned. Why is she saying this? He stared back at her, his skin paled as his mind struggled to verbalize any coherent thought.

“Yusuke… do not look at me so…” Keiko pleaded gently.

“You were all I thought of when I thought I couldn’t go on anymore!!! We all thought we were going to die in there!!! How can you say that to me? Do you not have feelings for me at all?” he raged, fire flared in his brown eyes.

“I have feelings for you, yes. But they’re not the same anymore…” she said not backing down. “I’m tired of worrying about you… I don’t know where you are, or when you’re going to come back half the time. I’m tired, Yusuke. I can’t wait for you. I can be a friend to you, but I don’t think I can still love you… I can’t. Not anymore.” she continued.

“I didn’t tell you to wait forever!!! I said I’d come back… for you.” He said, his eyes never leaving hers, pleading. Then he asked her, “There is someone else?”

Keiko lowered her eyes and added quietly “Yes.”

Yusuke swallowed hard. He felt like punching her right now. If such a feeling is possible, he hated her and loved her at the same time.

Afraid that her voice would fail her, Keiko looked at him with determined eyes and whispered “It’s for the best.”

At that point, Yusuke felt dead.

“Yeah, maybe for you.” He said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Suddenly, he can’t take any of it anymore. With one last piercing look, he turned around and walked away from the one girl he has ever cared about.
