Yusuke’s POV

“You’ve disappointed me, Urameshi Yusuke. I want to see the depths of your power!”

In the stadium on Ankoku Island, Toguro’s voice boomed out, striking a chill in everyone’s bone. No one, not even the youkai spectators could move, when struck by that dreadful voice. Toguro sounded like the devil himself, straight from the heart of hell.

The cold, calculating bastard strode over to me without a moment’s hesitation.

I charged at him unleashing a barrage of my deadliest punches. “Die!” I screamed.

Toguro smirked, taking in great delight from each ounce of my hellish suffering. “How pathetic!” he scowled. He delivered a merciless blow to the pit of my stomach.

I gasped, unable to breath. Toguro sent be back reeling to the other side of the stadium. I smashed right into the wall, cracking the cement around me. My internal organs screamed in agony. I coughed out what seemed to be a bucket load of blood.

Before I could blink, he vanished. Toguro grimaced, pulling me out of the cracked wall by my head. Then he slammed me into the ground like a piece of shit. His cruel boot hit my head, grinding it deeper into the cold mud.

“You’re powerless, powerless!” Toguro sneered, kicking my body over like a dead, rotting corpse. “Now, in order to draw out your true power, one of your friends has to die, now in front of your very eyes.”

“NO!!” I shrieked, forcing my battered, helpless body to its feet. “Never!” I dashed at him focusing all my rage into a single punch. He swatted me away like a fly that buzzed around maneuver. All I could do was lift my head from the ground and watch. He marched towards my friends as if he were the grim reaper itself, ready to claim their lives in a single sweep of his scythe.

By the edge of the arena Koenma, Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara froze in his shadow of death.

Toguro scanned them coldly. “Hmm, which one of you would make a fine sacrifice, for the sake of drawing out Yusuke’s inner power?” His icy gaze loomed over to Kuwabara, who trembled in fear.

“Kuwabara!” I yelled at the top of my lungs, my hands reaching out for him. If only I could grasp him one last time. “Kuwabara!” I roared. My eyes watered with tears.

Only now in the face of death did I realize my feelings for him. Memories of our past flooded my mind in a myriad of memories!

After my death Kuwabara attended the funeral at my house. In my living room, his eyes locked onto my picture. They were so full of desperation, heart aching and suffering I burst into tears remembering them. “Urameshi!” he cried, shaking with grief and despair. “Don’t leave me! Who will I fight!?”

Another memory replayed itself in my mind.

After defeating the four Saint Beats, I fell over, exhausted from the battle with Suzaku. Kuwara sized me, crying out desperately, “He’s used up all his reiki! His heart is barely beating! I’ll give him my reiki. I won’t let him die!” Kuwabara forced his reiki into me, saving my life.

Then another came…

I saw Kuwabara’s image etched in me memory. He grinned at me in his usual, goofy manner. “I, Kuwabara Kazuma am the warrior of love, right Yusuke!?”

Then the last one…

Kuwabara winked at me, his arm over my shoulders. “Urameshi! I’ll never miss a good fight. I’ll be by your side forever and forever. You can count on me, Urameshi. I’ll always be there for you, I promise!” He gazed at me, his eyes beaming with love and friendship.

“Kuwabara!” I shouted at the top of my lungs, jerked back into the cruel moment of the present.

“Urameshi!” cried Kuwabara back at the impending moment of his death. “I will not go down like this, Urameshi! I’ll fight him for you!”

Kuwabara knew his end was near. He mustered up his courage. In a roar he extended his rei-kun, rushing madly at Toguro.

“Kuwarbara! NOOOO!!!” I wailed out, choked by my tears. “KUWABARAA!!!”

Toguro, the heartless predator he was, snatched Kuwabura by his neck in midair. Then before my very eyes he ran his arm through Kuwabara’s chest. Blood spurted from him in large crimson torrents.

Kuwabara’s eyes widened in shock. His mouth hung open, gaping in disbelief. Toguro smiled sadistically, dropping his body. He hit the ground in a pool of blood.

“KUWABARA!!” I raced to his side, clutching him in my arms, but it was too late. “You bastard! You said you’d never leave me! If you break your promise, I’ll never forgive you, I swear!”

The warrior of love coughed, hacking up blood onto his torn chest. He smiled meekly. He looked at me through half open lids, glazed over, his life force ebbing away. He uttered, “Don’t give me that face. It’s not like you…Urameshi…”

“You’re…dying!” I sobbed, clutching him with all my might.

“Don’t say that…it’s just been…a rough day, Urameshi,” Kuwabara insisted, smiling through his pain. Even as he was dying, Kuwabara smiled. “If you got something to say, say it now, Urameshi…”

“You’ll hate me for it…” I sniffled.

“I could never…hate you. You’re my best friend, Urameshi,” he persisted.

With the last of his strength he gazed deep into my eyes, down into the pit of my soul.

“Say it…” Kuwabara uttered, taking in one of his last few breaths.

“Kuwabara…I…I love you!” I confessed.

Even as he grew more distant like the setting sun, his face glowed with joy.

The warm flesh of his lips met mine in a deep and passionate kiss. He smiled one last name. With his last breath, he whispered, “Thank you… Urameshi.”

Then he closed his eyes and fell into a deep, deep sleep…

It was never too late to tell him from the bottom of my heart, I love you, Kuwabara.
