Scene 8
Scene 8 ------------ The Courtyard
* When Yusuke and Kurama come outside onto the wide manicured lawn they find Hiei staring into the burning black pyre in the center. The apparition glances toward them making them hesitate to move closer. The look on his face is blank as usual, but both of them can sense his inner situation. As though he’s just on the edge of either retaining his control or bolting. They also notice the soft glow of his opened jagan behind the head ward.
Hiei- I suppose the woman sent you after me again.
Yusuke- No. Actually, she wanted us to leave you alone this time.
* Hiei looks back into the flames.
Hiei- Hn. She’s a wise one.. You should’ve listened.
Kurama- I think you know why we couldn’t.
* For several moments Hiei doesn’t respond. Then he raises a hand to wipe some of the drying blood off of his face and stares at it.
Hiei- I need to go find a.. river to clean up in.. Then I’m going to patrol my Territory.
Yusuke- You think this guy wasn’t alone?
Hiei- Hn. He was alone.. He was the last remaining member of that accursed family.. Matsua had killed the others off himself.. This b------ had it set in his twisted brain that it fell to him to seek vengeance anyway.. I feel no pity toward a demon that stupid.
Kurama- But you do regret that your daughter witnessed it.
Yusuke- You do know that she’s a demon, Hiei? She’ll probably see a lot worse in her lifetime.
* Without so much as a grunt Hiei blinks away.
Yusuke- Aww, d--- it! Why can’t I ever keep my big mouth shut!?
* Kurama stops Yusuke from following.
Kurama- I think we can’t help him this time. His jagan is all he’ll need to sort this out. I can already feel it working to counteract the Maddening spell.
Yusuke- Are you sure?
Kurama- I don’t sense the same kind of depression in him as before.. Do you?
* Yusuke concentrates on what he felt a moment, then shakes his head.
Yusuke- I felt.. sadness.. and regret more than anything else.
* Yusuke looks toward the small plume of black flames.
Yusuke- I still find it amazing that he’s this affected over a human.. even if it was her.
Kurama- when he accepted this pack he opened a floodgate of emotions that he never learned how to deal with.
* Yusuke looks up at Kurama.
Kurama- That’s the advantage that we have over him. To understand and embrace our emotions.. He was raised.. much differently you know. I’ll alert Koenma to keep an eye on him, just in case.
* Yusuke nods and goes back inside. Kurama glances in the direction Hiei disappeared, then lifts his wrist that contains the watch communicator Koenma had given him.
