Looking Back

My gods, it took me a month to update this story! I do apologize for the long wait. This story is a lot harder to write than I originally thought, and I completely changed their characters too fast. I meant to have a longer process, but... I'm lazy, so here's what I got.

Oh, yeah... there will be lemons later, more than likely in a couple chapters or so.

Chapter 8: Looking Back

*****

“Are you stupid?!” the football team captain was nearly shocked into a heart attack when he heard the words spoken from his twin sister’s mouth.

“But… I… what…?” he was actually stunned into sputtering for the first time in his life.

“What were you thinking?” she scolded him softly.

“I… don’t know…”

“That’s right, you didn’t really think about it, did you? You have no idea how much you hurt him, do you?”

“No… I guess…”

“That’s right!”

“Well, he seemed fine when he was going to class.”

“They think he lost his mind, he was going in between smiling, laughing, and nearly on the verge of crying within just a few minutes.”

“…Hn, it’s not my problem.” He wasn’t very good at hiding the hideous amount of guilt he felt for saying such mean things to Kurama. He still cared deeply for the teen, but things happen and change the course of history.

“It’s your fault and you know it, brother!” she almost whimpered.

“He turned me down first!” he made a barely audible gasp when he felt the tears stinging at the edges of his eyes.

“…” Yukina was taken aback by her brother’s tone towards her as well as the pain that was thick in his voice, “Hiei…”

“… Never mind,” he stared at the ground, “I’ll be in my room.”

“Okay,” Yukina watched sadly as her brother went to hide.

The wind blew gently through the open window where Kurama sat, staring out at the tree just outside of his bedroom. He watched the birds settle on the thick branches. He used to watch them all the time. The red robins had built a nest in a nook in the trunk of the well aged tree.

He threw a handful of bread crumbs to the nesting birds before closing the window and settling at his desk so he could become distracted with his school work. Finally he had been over thinking his situation so much that he just passed out atop his math problems for the evening.

Life had been so much easier before he had to tutor the football player. He recalled when they first met. He gave his usual politeness, and the boy seemed to completely ignore him, barely saying a word. He had thought the boy to be a complete jerk. He was stuck up and a bit of an ass… well… now, Kurama rather appreciated that ass.

Oh no, there went his imagination all the way back to having Hiei in his bed… he had just been so confused when Hiei made that startling confession. He had never expected the star football player, one of the most popular lower classman to suddenly admit that he was in love with him. Honestly he had no intention of ever speaking with the football captain again after the first polite greeting, but apparently Hiei had more of an impression from that first encounter than he had originally meant. He was just being polite after accidentally running into the child size player.

Kurama blushed at how close they had been on that first day. He was practically on top of Hiei already. Even then, now that he thought about it, he had thought Hiei to be very attractive, but believed it to be an internal compliment. Like he would admit that a famous actor was attractive.

“Hmm…” he let out a heavy sigh as he finally awoke from his pleasure induced haze. He took a breath and focused his thoughts. If Hiei didn’t want to be with him, he had to get over it. Kurama had a crush… that was it… he’d get over it… right?

*****

Kurama was hiding in the library once again. He had left all of his friends, and became a recluse hidden amongst the books and shelves. He enjoyed reading and watching the football team play everyday they had a home game. He pulled one of the comfy chairs up to the large windows over looking the large field. The sun was already setting when the game ended, and Kurama watched as Hiei was carried away once again. The boy was truly amazing; a little on the lazy side when it came to homework, but he was smart and aware of the goings on around him at all timed.

Shaking his head, Kurama finally stood about half an hour after the game finished and left the library, which had closed two hours ago, but the librarian knew him, and gave him permission to stay afterward. Hiei had probably gone home by now.

“Yo, Kurama, what are you still doing here? You watching from the library again?”

“Y-Yusuke?” Kurama jerked, wondering if Hiei was next to the delinquent, glaring at him, “How did you know?”

“We used to see you from the field. We would tease Hiei that you were watching him.”

“Where are Hiei and Kuwabara?” he tried to ask nonchalantly, but it was obvious that he was worried about Hiei’s pained eyes.

“Hiei doesn’t like to hang around very much, and Kuwabara’s probably taking Yukina on a date or something.”

“Do, um, do you mind me asking… how long as Hiei liked me?”

“Liked you? The guys been completely smitten since he first met you in the hall. Man, you get a little liquor in the guy and he never stops talking. Usually he’d ramble on about you, and how he’d one day get the confidence to kiss you. Well…”

“Does he really hate me now? Jeez, I sound like a girl, don’t I?” he ran a nervous hand through his hair.

“Nah, man, his pride’s just bruised,” he threw an arm about Kurama's shoulders, “Come on, you look like you need a drink.”

“No, really, Yusuke, I should be getting home.”

“You look more like you need someone to talk to. You stopped hanging out with everyone, didn’t you?”

“I left my old friends to get to know Hiei better, and then I… jeez, I am an idiot, aren’t I?”

“Yes, but what do I know?” he laughed, and the two went back to Yusuke’s place.

Kurama stared through the neck of his bottle of beer.

“This isn’t good…” his voice started to slur as he lifted it up to the light so the bottom shone brightly.

“What’s wrong?” the dark haired teen held his third beer to his lips.

“I think I’m drunk.”

“…” Yusuke just stared for a little before cracking up.

“What the… hell is s-so funny?”

“You had a single beer!”

“Shut up.”

“Man, you managed to hold more last time, what happened?”

“I’m depressed,” he pouted.

“So, you really like him?

“…Yes…”

“What made you realize that?”

“Mmm…” he murmured softly, “… the kiss…”

Yusuke blinked.

“Hiei’s very good with his tongue,” he clapped his hands together, allowing the empty bottle to fall to the floor.

“And you’re very loose with yours right now,” the sober one noted.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” he sighed, and played his toe over the brown glass, rolling it about the floor.

“Ah, you’re in love,” Yusuke cooed.

“… I guess… is that what’s making me feel… off?”

“Yo, I was kidding, but if that’s what you’re feeling, sure why not?”

“Even my mother says I love him, but… how do I know? How do you know that you love Keiko?”

“Truthfully… I don’t have a clue, but I really can’t see myself with anyone other than Keiko. We’ve always been together, and I just can’t picture myself with anyone other than her. She makes me happy, no matter how much she yells at me, but I know she’s the only one who cares enough about me to keep me in line…”

“Sounds wonderful,” Kurama slid to the ground from the comfy chair, “Oh! Look at the time,” he stared at his naked wrist, focusing on the pale skin of his arm, “I should be getting home.”

“Man, you aren’t gonna be able to find your way home. I mean you had one whole beer!” he snickered.

“Yeah… you’re right, I’ll just sleep here.”

“Nah man, you can take my bed. I brought you here, and for some crazy idea thought you could handle a bottle, but you proved me wrong, light weight.”

“Thank you! Hiei was always saying that I was heavy,” he sat straight up, but found that it hurt his head, so he laid back down, curling into a ball on the floor, “I’m sleepy…”

“Come on, let me help you to bed,” he pulled Kurama to his feet, and basically dragged the dead weight to his bedroom. “Hiei’s a lucky guy. You are quite the looker. If you weren’t a guy…” he sighed before tucking the redhead into bed, and grabbed a blanket to sleep on the couch.

*****

“Yo, Hiei, calm down man! That really hurts!”

“Screw that!” the team captain growled, “Now tell me why the fuck you were walking here with Kurama.”

“Relax, it’s nothing like you’re thinking!”

“That you guys aren’t fucking talking about me behind my back?”

“Oh… right… yeah, we’re doin’ that,” he sighed out in relief.

“I’m not stupid. You aren’t going to fuck him.”

“Good, because I did.”

“What?” Hiei grabbed the front of Yusuke’s uniform and flipped him into the wall of lockers.

“Holy shit,” the taller teen coughed as he tried to stand, but Hiei was coming at him with another attack.

“Down, Hiei!” Kuwabara managed to hold the shorter boy up so he couldn’t even touch the ground, “I’m sure Yusuke is kidding.”

“Jeez, I didn’t think you’d take it seriously,” he straightened his clothing.

“You’re an idiot,” Hiei snarled before walking out of the locker room.

“Yo, where’re you going?” Kuwabara tried to grab the other’s wrist again, but the quarterback was fast.

“Yeah, man, we still got practice.”

“I don’t care. Tell coach I got sick, or better yet, tell him to fuck off!"
