Scene 78
Another necessary skip ahead in time here. Sad twist of fate, but it's the way my muse went, so don't stone me.

Scene 78 ------------------------------------------- One Month Later
* One of Alaric's nurses that make up the fortress' medical staff hands Ryuji the last child that had just been born. Before he and Pehjo can name the small boy, as they had the first two babies, Ryuji hears the heartrate monitor hit a steady tone as it flatlines. Ryuji cradles his son as he turns to watch another nurse pull the thin cover over Pehjo's damp face. Indeed, Ryuji had honored his promise and made this past month the best that his mate had ever known. At the same time, in private, he had contemplated over his next move. Ryuji moves to lay a free hand one last time on Pehjo's covered chest as a show of respect. The fire demon then forces himself to turn away from the gurney stoicly. The skink had also goaded him into promising to face this crisis as bravely as he could manage. Ryuji takes his quiet, youngest son over to the other side of the room to lay him in the large basinette beside his slightly older brother and sister. The nurse watching the new babies looks at Ryuji.
Nurse- Another beautiful son, Lord Ryuji.. His name?
* Ryuji swallows to find his voice.
Ryuji- I'm naming him Kanashimi. (1)
* The nurse hesitates, then nods, and writes it in the records that he's in charge of keeping.
Nurse- My sympathies, M'Lord.. I wish these little ones much prosperity.
* The nurse bows and leaves as Mukuro enters. Ryuji half watches her glance toward the covered gurney that's being wheeled out. Mukuro then comes over to look down at the three sleeping babies.
Mukuro- Three.
Ryuji- Hai.
* Mukuro looks at Ryuji.
Ryuji- Two boys.. one girl.
Mukuro- And what have you named her?
* Ryuji pauses, knowing how the woman will react to his answer. Then he firmly turns to look up at her. When he sees her haggard appearance it gives him another brief pause before he answers.
Ryuji- Their names,.. as decided by my dying mate and I,.. are Ryupeh, Hotaru (2), and Kanashimi.
* Mukuro scowls.
Mukuro- You know my rule concerning all females born in Alaric..
Ryuji- Pehjo requested her to be named after his mother.. with his dying breath.. Just before they had to extract my youngest son.. I will not change it.
* Mukuro meets Ryuji's stern gaze for several moments.
Mukuro- As much as I express my condolences on your loss.. I cannot allow my highest officer to defy me in this manner.
* Ryuji crosses his arms, keeping his expression adamant. This is the pivotal confrontational moment that both had felt was coming. While Ryuji had spent his every free moment in the past month seeing to Pehjo's needs, Mukuro had grown increasingly demanding and eccentric, even more so than usual.
Ryuji- I do not make it a habit of repeating myself,.. often.. But I will make an exception this time.. I-will-not.. change.. her name.. It is Hotaru.
* Mukuro stares down at her Second. She has known him long enough to know how stubborn he can be. Perhaps evenn more so than her last Second. The half-mechanical demoness also knows the fate that's now been placed on Ryuji. She turns her back to leave, then pauses. The sudden burst of anger, brought on by yet another circumstance that she's powerless to control, overwhelms her. Ryuji watches her begin to tremble slightly and braces himself.
Mukuro- Take.. your brats.. and be out of my territory by morning.
* The order, instead of the violent reaction he'd been braced for, catches Ryuji by surprise. Then his mind begins to calculate his next move even as he nods.
Ryuji- Done.
* As Mukuro continues leaving, Ryuji looks toward her, opening his jagan to scan her curiously. What he discovers, and the fact that she doesn't even take notice of his probing, startles him. Then she speaks again just as she reaches the door, since all the others had left them alone in the room.
Mukuro- (Quietly) Just between us..
* Ryuji looks up to listen.
Mukuro- (Quietly) I have never removed Hiei's name from the official records as my Heir.
* Her last statement leaves Ryuji puzzled as to why she would tell him this. When she is gone Ryuji turns to look back down at his three babies. He lifts a hand to run it through his ebony spikes as he closes his eyes and curses softly. He gets his mind back into figuring out his next move.
