Chapter 7: Kuwabara to the Rescue!!

Kuwabara lay in his bed, petting Eikichi who lay on top of him. As Kuwabara stared up at the ceiling of his room, he couldn’t help but have his thoughts wonder back to how his master was at that very moment. He wasn’t sure, but he had a feeling that something was going to happen, and most likely it wouldn’t be anything good.

It was at this moment, that he felt a volt of pain seem to surge down his spine. He sat up so fast that the poor cat jumped, his fur standing on end by the sudden movement. Kuwabara’s hands went to his head, thrusting them into his hair as he shut his eyes.

Within his mind’s eye, he could clearly see Hiei falling to the floor of a warehouse somewhere, smoke coming from his back. Kuwabara’s eyes snapped open as a chill went down his spine from the vision.

“Hiei’s in trouble…” Kuwabara said, standing up and starting towards the door.

He stopped and turned back, having a thought come to mind. Kuwabara went to his closet and took out one of his book bags that he used when he was little; the same one that he had on the day he had first been kidnapped. He opened it and was glad that it was empty. He went around stuffing clothes and other such items into the bag. This time he would be prepared to go to Hiei’s house. He really didn’t like Hiei’s fashion sense, and it was a lucky thing his parents had taken him out shopping, replacing his eleven year old clothes with fourteen age clothes.

After he was packed, Kuwabara gave one last look at his room, giving a sigh.

“Well…it was fun while it lasted.” He said before opening his door and sneaking down the stairs.

Kuwabara stopped by the closet that held the bathroom towels and opened it, taking out a spare First Aid Kit his mom kept there incase of emergencies. Kuwabara slipped it into his book bag before continuing down the hall towards the front door. He could hear his parents in the kitchen, preparing dinner. Kuwabara made sure not to make a sound as he snuck across the floor to the front door, managing to make it past the kitchen door, which was open; without being seen.

Kuwabara breathed a sigh of relief as he reached for the door.

“And where are you going with that back pack, little bro?”

Kuwabara froze and turned towards his sister would gave him an accusing look as a cigarette hung from her lips.

“Huh, hey sis didn’t see you come in…” Kuwabara said giving a nervous laugh as he scratched the back of his head.

Shizuru looked at him and took out her cigarette letting out the smoke with a sigh.

“You’re going back, aren’t you?” she asked.

Kuwabara looked at her, shocked that she figured it out.

“How…?” started Kuwabara.

“I could tell…from how you seemed to make an extra effort to spend more time with mom, dad, and hell even me. You haven’t changed much from that eleven year old brat; you’re easy to read.” Shizuru said, shaking her head at him with a small sad smile.

“Shizuru…you…you don’t understand…I made a promise to help him. I-I can’t’ break a promise, ya know that right? You understand that right?” Kuwabara asked, his eyes seeming to beg his sister to understand.

Shizuru looked at him for a little longer before closing her eyes and releasing another sigh.

“There’s no one stopping you.”

Kuwabara looked at her shocked yet happy.

“BUT, you must promise me something.” She said.

Kuwabara looked at her with a serious look and nodded.

“Sure, anything sis.”

“I want you to promise that once you full fill that promise that you will come back to us. Promise me Kazu.”

Kuwabara didn’t know if he could keep that promise; he wasn’t sure what could happen in the future. However, Hiei’s injured and smoking body flashed across his eyes as another sharp pain went down his spine. He didn’t have any time to argue and Hiei needed him right now.

Kuwabara sighed, closing his eyes. He had no choice.

“Alright sis…I…I promise, I’ll come back once I’m done helping him…” Kuwabara said.

Shizuru looked at him with a smile and nodded.

“Good luck Kazu, and don’t worry about mom and dad, I’ll tell them…they will eventually understand.” She said.

He nodded and before going out the door, gave his sister a quick hug.

“See ya sis.” He said before closing the door behind him; leaving his family behind again; however this time by his own free will.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kuwabara ran in the direction he sensed him; though Hiei’s aura was weak; their connection through the collar/bracelet made it easy to sense Hiei.
‘Hiei? Are you there? Hiei, can you hear me?!’ Kuwabara shouted in his head as he continued to run.
He was using his telepathy to try and connect with Hiei.
‘Hiei!’ Kuwabara shouted again.
‘Shut up!’ Kuwabara heard in his head.
He gave a sigh of relief as he continued to run.
‘I heard you the first several times…’ Hiei growled.
‘Are you alright? I felt you hurt through the connection…’ Kuwabara said as he continued in the direction of the docks.
‘I’m fine…’ he heard Hiei growl. ‘Just surprised that’s all.’ ((Ok, I know Hiei’s out cold in the warehouse now, but I think he could still talk to Kuwabara…he’s just too weak to move…so really, he’s not out yet))
‘Don’t worry Hiei; I’m coming to get you.’ Kuwabara said continuing to run.
‘Don’t.’ came Hiei’s reply.
Kuwabara stopped in his tracks.
‘What…? Why…?’ Kuwabara asked, his eyes widening. ‘Don’t…don’t tell me that…that it’s…’ Kuwabara couldn’t finish.
‘Don’t be an idiot.’ came the snide remark. ‘Do you really think I could be this easily defeated…by a rookie like him…’ growled Hiei.
Kuwabara didn’t know what was going on, but figured it would be easier to go get his master then ask who the ‘rookie’ was. He started running again, asking a different question.
‘Then why don’t you want me to come get you?’
Hiei was silent for a moment.
‘Because…’ Hiei said.
‘That’s not a good reason Hiei.’ Growled Kuwabara, as the dock came into sight. ‘You better tell me now, because I’m outside.’
‘Kuwabara, don’t you dare enter those doors.’ growled Hiei.
Kuwabara reached the door of the warehouse, determined more then ever to help his master.
‘That’s twice you said my name…I’m gonna get you out of there whether you like it or not!’ Kuwabara said before opening the door.
‘…baka…’
Kuwabara ignored the insult and snuck into the warehouse. He could sense four other aura’s other then his masters; two of them familiar, one of the two being Kurama’s aura.
‘I wonder why he’s here…’ Kuwabara thought, but decided to get Hiei out and ask questions later.
Kuwabara walked in a direction that was opposite from the other auras. He stopped in his tracks, finding an unconscious Hiei on the floor of the buildings floor.
“Hiei…” Kuwabara gasped as he rushed to his fallen master’s side.
He turned him over and looked at the calm face of his master who looked as if he was sleeping.
“Hiei…wake up Hiei…” Kuwabara said, shaking him.
A moan came from Hiei, causing Kuwabara to give a sign in relief.
“You’re alive…alright.” Kuwabara said.
Kuwabara set his book bag to the side and opened it. He was glad he had brought the first aid kit with him. He opened it up and gently turned Hiei back on his stomach so he could look at his injured back. Kuwabara cringed at how badly burn his back was.
“Geeze…Hiei…who did this to you…” he said, gently touching the torched skin.
“You!”
Kuwabara froze. He knew that voice. He turned on his heels, standing up and gasped at it being the guy he had fought the night he was sent to retrieve Kurama.
“YOU! But…but why are you here?!” Kuwabara said.
“I could ask YOU the same question; but at least it makes it easier finding you.” Yusuke said with a smile.
He took a step towards Kuwabara, who tensed up. Yusuke noticed and figured it was because of their last confrontation.
“Hey, it’s ok. I’m not gonna beat you up again. I swear!” Yusuke said, waving his hands in the air.
“Did…were you the punk who did this to Hiei?” Kuwabara asked his hands clenched into a fist.
Yusuke took another step towards Kuwabara and noticed the teen go into a defensive stance.
“Yeah, I did. What’s wrong? I thought you’d be happy to be free from that guys’ control.” Yusuke said.
Kuwabara narrowed his eyes at the teen.
“How didya know about that?”
“He already knew, but I confirmed his suspicions, Kuwabara-kun.”
Kuwabara knew that voice as well, and looked behind Yusuke, finding a bleeding and wounded Kurama blocking off the only exit.
‘Damn…’ Kuwabara thought.
“Kurama, what are you doing here, and what happened to your stomach?” Kuwabara said, pointed to his stomach.
“Heh, you could say Hiei gave me a hard time.” Kurama said with a weak smile.
Yusuke continued to look at Kuwabara. He didn’t understand why Kuwabara wasn’t excited or even happy about being free.
“Why do you care about that pipsqueak anyway? Wasn’t he the guy who took you away from your family, and made you his slave?” Yusuke asked.
Something in Kuwabara’s brain snapped. It was the way Yusuke had said ‘pipsqueak’. His mind seemed to ach, wanting Kuwabara to remember something; however instead of remembering, Kuwabara grew angry for some unknown reason.
Kuwabara stomped yup to Yusuke, who took a step back, unable to understand what could set the teen off.
“Now you listen to me PIPSQUEAK,” Kuwabara stared, not paying attention to the eye twitch Yusuke did at the ‘pipsqueak’ remark, “you don’t know who you’re messin’ with, just like you didn’t know the first time! So, I’ll let you go without me havin’ to grin your face into the pavement.” Kuwabara growled.
‘Human…’
Kuwabara stopped and backed off, which surprised both Yusuke and Kurama.
‘Hiei? I’m sorry…’ Kuwabara said.
‘Let’s…let’s just go…don’t mess with him…’ Hiei said before going back into the blackness of his mind.
Kuwabara nodded and turned around, leaving Yusuke stunned. Kuwabara picked up Hiei and put him over his shoulder, his right hand holding Hiei while his left grabbed a hold of his back pack. Kuwabara turned back to Yusuke and walked right past a stunned Yusuke, towards Kurama, who didn’t move.
“Kuwabara-kun, listen to me, you don’t have to listen to Hiei anymore. Like Yusuke said before, you are free.” Kurama said.
“You know what Kurama? I thought you were a real nice guy, but I should have listened to Hiei when he told me to stay away from you…you’re not such a nice guy if you could betray Hiei’s trust like this…what a friend are you?” Kuwabara said, glaring into Kurama’s eyes.
Kurama looked back into Kuwabara’s eyes, not looking away.
“Kuwabara-kun…I just think what Hiei did to you…how he forced you into a situation you had no right getting involved in, was not being a ‘nice guy’.” Kurama sighed.
Kuwabara growled and narrowed his eyes at Kurama.
“He needed my help, and I won’t leave him until I finished what I promised I would do! Men never break promises!” Kuwabara said, about to walk past Kurama.
“Hey.”
Kuwabara stopped and turned looking at Yusuke who looked back at him with pity in his eyes.
“Listen to your self, man. You’re tellin’ us that you made a promise to this guy who, from what I know, kidnapped so you could help him with something?” Yusuke asked.
Kuwabara glared at Yusuke.
“Yes.”
“Are you some kind of moron who wants to be someone’s slave, or what?” Yusuke asked, walking towards Kuwabara.
“NO… but…” Kuwabara started, but was interrupted.
“What, you made a promise to him and that’s it? You stick by it?” Yusuke asked, standing in front of Kuwabara.
Kuwabara felt a chill down his spine, he didn’t know why but he had the feeling he should get out of there as soon as he could. He took a step back, but found Kurama in his way.
“You know what….I can’t help you if you don’t even want help…” Yusuke said, shocking both Kurama and Kuwabara.
“Yusuke?” Kurama asked, wondering what was on Yusuke’s mind.
“I mean, how can I stop you if you want to throw your life away doing something for this guy who might not even have you looking for something that’s real.” Yusuke said, shrugging his shoulders and turning around, hiding the smirk that came across his lips.
Kurama caught on to what Yusuke was going with and closed his eyes with a smile.
‘Clever, Yusuke.’ Kurama thought.
“Yusuke has a point, Kuwabara-kun. How do you know what Hiei’s looking for is real and he really kidnapped you just to use you?” Kurama asked.
Even though he knew the truth behind Kuwabara’s being Hiei’s slave, he still didn’t like how Hiei had treated Kuwabara when ever he was around.
Kuwabara turned around, pissed towards Kurama.
“Don’t say that! I know that his sister is real! I know that he is looking for her! He talks about her in his sleep, about how he couldn’t be there to protect her from whoever took her away! You don’t know…you don’t know him like I do…” Kuwabara said, closing his eyes.
This reaction caught both Yusuke and Kurama off guard, both looking at him with a critical look. Yusuke sighed and put his hand on Kuwabara’s free shoulder, causing Kuwabara to tense.
“Listen…I understand that you feel like you owe him something and all that, but…you need to think about how much your family must miss you…you know? Take it from me…” Yusuke said, his mother sobbing at his wake coming to his mind. “No mother should cry over her son…”
Kuwabara lowered his head, still having a hold onto Hiei.
“They already know my choice…Hiei…he didn’t think he’d make it so he sent me home until he could get me again…he…he gave me almost two weeks to spend with my family…so…so they know what I have to do…” Kuwabara said before pulling away from Yusuke and going around Kurama.
“Kuwabara!” Yusuke shouted.
“No, just…just leave me and Hiei alone…” Kuwabara said.
Yusuke growled, becoming frustrated that his idea of getting Kuwabara upset and to try and attack him didn’t work. He clenched his hands into fists.
“Kuwabara!” Yusuke shouted.
Kuwabara froze. Fear seemed to spread through out his body at that roar. He turned as if in slow motion and found Yusuke’s fist land hard into his stomach. Spit and blood sprayed from his mouth as he was sent flying backwards into some crates. Smoke filled the area Kuwabara was sent in. Yusuke straightened himself up and looked on as the smoke began to clear.
Kurama gave a sigh.
“Yusuke, don’t you think that was a little too much?”
Yusuke glanced at Kurama for a moment before turning his eyes back to the crates. Kuwabara lay in the mist of broken crates, Hiei in his arms, not a scratch on him; other then what Yusuke had done to him earilier; laying safe in Kuwabara’s arms. Kuwabara’s clothes were covered in dust and his eyes were closed having been knocked out.
Yusuke shook his head.
“I couldn’t just let him throw away his life like that, Kurama. I don’t know what it is about that guy….but…it’s like I have to protect him or something…I can’t seem to explain it, but it’s like I already know him…” Yusuke said, before walking over to the fallen teen.
Kurama watched in awe as Yusuke took Hiei and placed him off to the side before picking Kuwabara up and half dragging him out of the pile.
“What’s going on in here?! Are you guys alright? Oh my!” gasped Botan, covering her mouth at seeing the injuried man Yusuke was half carrying.
“Hey, Botan, mind if you make sure Hiei gets taken in? I’m gonna bring this guy back home with me.” Yusuke said, turning towards the warehouse doors.
“Alright…wait! What about Keiko?!” Botan said.
Yusuke stopped in his tracks and cursed.
“Damn it…I forgot…”
“You forgot?! Yusuke, you are such a jerk!” Botan shouted, resting her hands on her hips.
“Hey! I was too busy with keeping Kuwabara from escaping with Hiei!” Yusuke shouted.
Botan gasped.
“So that’s Kuwabara?!” she said.
“Yes…damnit…I can’t carry both Kuwabara and Keiko…” growled Yusuke.
“It’s alright Yusuke.” Kurama said, picking up Kuwabara’s back pack and walking to Yusuke. “I will take Kuwabara home with me.”
Yusuke didn’t know why, but he tightened his grip on Kuwabara. He didn’t know what it was, but Kurama was just too nice to Kuwabara to Yusuke’s liking.
“Naw, it’s ok, besides I got some questions for him when he wakes up.” Yusuke said.
“Well, I could bring him to your house, and you help Miss Keiko-chan to her home.” Kurama said, reaching to take Kuwabara from Yusuke.
Yusuke took a step away from Kurama, moving Kuwabara with him.
“Listen, fox boy, I said I got it! Besides you don’t even know where I live!” Yusuke said.
Kurama waved his hands in the air as in a defensive manner.
“I didn’t mean anything by it, I swear! I just thought it would be better if I take care of him, since you have your friend to take care of.” Kurama said.
“Well, like I said, I still got stuff to ask Kuwabara. Why don’t YOU carry Keiko and we BOTH take Keiko to her house and then I’ll bring Kuwabara back to my place.” Yusuke said.
Kurama sighed.
“Alright Yusuke.”
“Hey! What about me?!” shouted Botan.
“You watch Hiei and makes sure he doesn’t wake up before pacifier breath’s guys come to pick him up.” Yusuke said, while Kurama picked up Keiko’s unconscious form.
“But what if Hiei wakes up before they get here?!” Botan said.
“I dunno, use your oar or something.” Yusuke said, before heading out of the warehouse.
“Wait! Yusuke!!” Botan shouted.
“It was a pleasure meeting you Botan-chan.” Kurama said with a bow before leaving, behind Yusuke.
Botan’s eye began to twitch. “What a jerk!” she growled.
