Life Goes On

Thoth, the side story's not really a big deal, just one of the subplots that I thought I'd get more flack over.

Scene 67 ------------------------------------------- Tourin

* Yusuke enters Hiei's bedroom carrying a bowl of rice. He pauses to watch Yukina finish another energy-sharing session. Yusuke smiles slightly when he comes over closer and sees that Kasaba is laying beside Hiei, embracing him. He can only imagine what Kuwabara would say if he could see this scene. The smile fades when he notices Hiei open weary eyes to look up at him. Yukina sighs and lifts her hand away from her brother. She glances over her shoulder up at Yusuke sadly.


Yusuke- It's okay, Sis.. I can wait until you're done.


* Yukina looks back up at him puzzled.


Yukina- But.. I was just.. finishing up..


* Yusuke now recognizes how drained Yukina is. She looks back down at Hiei who lets his eyes close again.


Yusuke- Then why does he look..?


* Yukina sighs deeply.


Yukina- Because.. he's directing.. my energy directly.. to the baby..


* Yusuke remains quiet for a couple moments.


Yusuke- Okay. I'm here to feed him now.. Thank you for helping, Sis.. But you need to save some energy for your own..


* Kasaba looks up at them. Hiei opens his eyes, too.


Kasaba- Can you teach me to do that, Aunt Yukina?


* They all answer the boy in unison.


All three- No!


* Hiei coughs and looks at Kasaba.


Hiei- You.. are too.. young,.. Imiko.

Kasaba- But I want to help you, Grandpa.


* Hiei raises a hand to lay it on Kasaba's head.


Hiei- I know.. But you.. can't..

Yukina- Come along, Sabie.. I need to go rest.. You can go play with the others.

Kasaba- But..

Yusuke- No arguments, boy.. It upsets your grandpa.


* Kasaba looks back down at Hiei.


Hiei- You're not.. old enough to.. share your energy.. with me.. It will make me sad.. if you risk your life.. for me.

Kasaba- You're risking yours for this baby.. You risked it for Uncle Yusuke.. I wanna be brave just like you!

Hiei- These things.. are my duty.. not yours, Imiko.. Now go.


* Yukina watches the boy leave the bed, sobbing as he leaves. She shakes her head and looks up at Yusuke.


Yukina- He's too young to understand..

Yusuke- I know. You go rest now, Sis.


* Yukina nods and leaves. Yusuke sits down on the edge of the bed beside Hiei. He feels the koorime attempt to connect their bond. Yusuke hesitantly allows it. Hiei opens his eyes again half way to look at Yusuke.


Yusuke- Yeah.. I've known about her for a while now.. It's not a problem.. Can you eat some rice, Babe?


* Hiei lifts a hand toward Yusuke and the Toushin grasps it gently.


Yusuke- I'm here, Hiei.. I want you to try to eat something..

Hiei- (Quietly) I don't.. want.. you to be.. so sad.. about this..

Yusuke- I know.. You're doing this for the baby.. But you need food, too.

Hiei- You're.. avoiding..

Yusuke- This is pointless, Hiei.. Okay? - I've been informed that I could lose you..


* Yusuke looks away to close his eyes a moment. Hiei feels the stab of sorrow that clenches Yusuke's heart before he gets it back behind the wall he's been working to keep up. Finally Yusuke swallows and looks back down at Hiei.


Yusuke- Do you really expect me to be.. happy about that?


* Yusuke offers Hiei a spoonful of the rice. Slowly Hiei opens his mouth to accept it.


Hiei- (Weakly) To give you.. our baby.. is my..


* Yusuke quiets him by pushing another spoonful of rice into his mouth.


Yusuke- Just eat, Babe.


* Hiei obeys quietly until he can eat no more. When he looks away to refuse the next spoonful Yusuke sighs and takes out a napkin from the pocket in his tunic. He makes Hiei look back at him again as he wipes his mouth gently.


Yusuke- (Quietly) I love you, Shorty.. I know you don't understand that..


* Yusuke feels Hiei's temperature drop suddenly. He quickly sets the half-empty bowl of rice aside and stands.


Yusuke- I know what you need.. You need some warm sunshine.. It's a beautiful day outside.. I'll take you out on the balcony for a while.


* Hiei gives no protest as Yusuke gathers him up, wraps the blanket around his shivering form, and carries him out through the livingroom. Kurama glances up from the couch where he is resting to watch them pass on their way to the balcony. The kitsune then sighs and closes his eyes again as he sends an encouraging message to Yusuke.

* He feels only his Alpha's acceptance of the message before he returns to his slumber. The three developing babies inside him are beginning to draw on his own energy, too. But since he's healthy, it only takes short naps throughout the day for Kurama to recover. Out on the balcony, Yusuke sits on his chais lounger cradling his smaller, weaker mate as he gently runs his fingers through Hiei's spikes lovingly. The koorime has already slipped back into hibernation, but is already beginning to feel warmer. Yusuke glances up quietly when Koenma steps out of a portal. Silently, the Teen godling moves the the lounger beside Yusuke and sits down. He reaches a hand over to lay it on Yusuke's arm a moment to show his support, then he relaxes back to bask in the warm sun, himself. Yusuke closes his eyes, thanking Enma once again for the friendships amd family he's come to be blessed with through these past few years.
