Scene 6
I want to thank you all for your condolences and understanding. It has been a rough time for our family. We’re losing so many of our older generation that its depressing at times. But the situation had no influence on this story whatsoever because this was written many months ago. The angst just happened. Anywho, on with the story.

Scene 6 --------- The Kitchen
* For the most part, the two friends remain quiet. The only sounds being those made by Kurama as he fixes breakfast. He almost drops a pan when Yusuke finally speaks up.
Yusuke- I never thought I’d ever see that side of Hiei.
Kurama- What side?
* Kurama glances toward Yusuke over his shoulder.
Yusuke- Him.. holding a baby.
Kurama- Wouldn’t you love your own children?
Yusuke- I haven’t got to know them, yet.
Hiei- Keep showing up around here and you’ll remedy that.
* They both look toward Hiei who has entered.
Kurama- I’m fixing breakfast, Hiei. Sit down, it’ll be ready very soon.
* Hiei stares up at the redhead a moment, then sighs and moves to sit at the table across from Yusuke.
Yusuke- Finally get the little guy to sleep?
Hiei- No. My Fox.. Lily came in so I let her take over.
* Kurama brings a couple bowls of fried rice with eggs and noodles over.
Kurama- You mean the black Kitsune?
Hiei- Hn.
Kurama- She’s very pretty.
* Hiei half glances up at Kurama but doesn’t answer. When he makes no move to take one of the bowls Kurama moves one of them over directly in front of him.
Kurama- That should have gotten a rise out of you.. Now eat.
Hiei- Don’t pander to me, Kurama.
Yusuke- Red’s actually a very good cook.
Hiei- When I’m hungry I’ll feed myself.
* Kurama lays a hand on Hiei’s shoulder.
Kurama- You’re depressed.. And that’s understandable..
Hiei- Have you lost a mate yet, Fox?
Kurama- Luckily, no.
* Kurama sits down to share the other bowl with Yusuke. Hiei watches them a couple moments.
Hiei- I’ve lost three.. And several babies.
* They look at him again.
Yusuke- Several?
Hiei- Lily lost her whole litter.
* For a couple moments they are all silent. Hiei doesn’t go into any further detail.
Kurama- We’re truly sorry about all of that.
Hiei- It’s none of your concern.
* Yusuke growls at him.
Yusuke- It is our concern!
Hiei- Because you want to get in my bed, Detective?
Yusuke- No! Because we’re your friends, d--- it!
* Hiei remains motionless a moment, then stands and leaves. Yusuke leans to place his head in his hands with a frustrated groan.
Kurama- Yusuke,..
Yusuke- I know! He doesn’t need to be yelled at right now.
Kurama- But sometimes that’s the only way to get through to him.
* Yusuke stands and leaves. He stands in the livingroom a moment looking out through Hiei’s balcony doors. The Koorime is standing on the wall staring down at the still-burning flames flickering in the middle of the courtyard. The black flames that will continue to burn until he draws them back into himself. Hiei hears his main door open and shut and knows that Yusuke has left. He also hears the sounds of Kurama putting stuff away in the kitchen. With a grunt he once more closes his senses off and moves down to relax on one of the loungers. In a few minutes he hears someone sit in the lounge chair beside him and glances toward the redhead. Kurama just smiles softly until Hiei notices movement back at the doors. When he recognizes River peeking in he nods slightly, but it is the only signal the little girl needs. Kurama watches her blink in then crawl up onto Hiei’s lap and snuggle into his arms.
Hiei- My oldest. River. This is.. one of my friends Kurama.
* River studies Kurama intently a moment, then hides her face against Hiei’s chest. Kurama leans back in his chair and closes his eyes. Usually all it took was for him to be in quiet company with the humanized Fox to calm him down. But today the presence just has the opposite affect. Without another word between them Hiei stands and carries River back inside. Kurama gets the message, but decides to just stay and relax there on the balcony a while.
