Chapter 06

Hiei stood outside of Kurama’s school waiting. Kurama would be getting out in a few more minutes. Yomi had gone back to the makai, and Yusuke was sure to get in detention so he should have Kurama clear to talk to him even if just for half an hour or so.

Right on time as the school bell rung loudly and the students began to exit and disperse to wherever they were headed, be it home or another place, Hiei spotted the redhead in the crowd walking out to the street. He didn’t stay by the gate to wait for Yusuke, perhaps he had also felt that Yusuke would be stuck in detention for a while again today. He looked like he was deep in thought. Hiei jumped down from the tree and walked over to the fox, he didn’t conceal his aura, and he knew Kurama did know he was there.

Kurama looked up at him when Hiei finally stood beside him. “Hello Hiei,” Kurama greeted, it wasn’t warm but it was certainly less hostile and angry than his greeting had been the last time they saw each other.

Hiei frowned somewhat. He was here to do something very specific. He needed to apologize, he had already decided on what he was going to tell him, the absolute truth and only hope it was enough, but for whatever reason right now the words eluded him.

“I don’t really know how to say this Kurama,” Hiei told the redhead bluntly, “So I’ll just tell you what I know.”

“I want you, Kurama.” Hiei started, though perhaps that wasn’t the bets thing to start of saying. After all he had him. Kurama was his. But he didn’t like it, he treated him poorly and he lost him.

“I want you back.” He restated. “I know what I did was wrong, and I want to make it right.” Now came the tougher part…

“I… apologize…”

He let that hang for a minute as he thought, there was something else that was equally humiliating that was supposed to come right after, what was it?

“Please forgive me,” he said quietly trying to keep his humiliation from showing through the burning in his face as he kept his eyes on the ground, “Though, perhaps I don’t even have the right to ask you that.”

Kurama watched the koorime somewhat sadly. He knew that saying that was probably very difficult for him but he’d done it anyway. He wanted to hug him again and tell him it was okay, but right then Yusuke walked up. He had probably ditched detention for it too.

“Hiei? What are you doing here?” Yusuke asked as he ran up to the two looking at Hiei, more surprised than jealous at the moment. But then Hiei and Kurama hadn’t been doing anything either.

“I wasn’t aware I had a restraining order already,” Hiei told the hanyou curtly somewhat annoyed. Now that Yusuke was here Kurama’s judgement would probably sway and he wouldn’t be able to get an answer to his apology, and after he had finally gotten it out too.

“Not yet,” Yusuke frowned at him. “He bothering you?” he asked Kurama after a moment. Kurama shook his head.

“No,” Kurama told him. “I have something to tell you both Hiei, and you Yusuke, I’m glad you’re here for that.”

“What did you say to him?” Yusuke asked suddenly glaring back at Hiei as if he had done something to make Kurama have something to say to the both of them.

“Nothing,” Hiei said watching Yusuke with the least amount of anger he could manage.

“Can it wait a minute?” Yusuke asked Kurama after a minute still glaring at Hiei accusingly. “Don’t give me that, you were talking to him about something, now what did you tell him?”

“I told you already, nothing,” Hiei insisted, fighting the urge to glare at the hanyou. Kurama sighed, of course Yusuke would pick a fight about something or another, but the truth of the matter was that Kurama would have had to tell both of them this anyway.

“Yeah, well I don’t trust that, and I don’t trust you,” Yusuke declared.

“Kurama does.” Hiei almost whispered.

“At least enough to talk to you?” Yusuke asked.

“We were friends for years,” Hiei said still restraining his glare as best he could and not really succeeding in it.

“Yeah, longer than I was, and still he only allowed you to become his lover after all that time,” Yusuke explained the rest. “I was his friend in a shorter time than you were, yet in the first week we’ve been together he trusted me enough to allow us to be intimate.”

Hiei’s eyes went as big as saucers. They had already…

Kurama’s eyes blanked for a second to register what Yusuke had just said.

“Let’s think about that for a minute, who do you think he trusts more?” Yusuke said proud of his reasoning skills.

“You were… intimate… already…” Hiei repeated in a quiet voice. His fists clenched and his face contorted into a dark glare as his blood boiled.

How had this happened!!

“Yusuke…”

Kurama’s soft calm voice cut into their argument. His face was expressionless as he looked at the hanyou but his eyes said everything the rest of him didn’t. Anger, surprise, sadness, hurt…

Above all hurt.

The actions that took place afterward were a blur, as red flashed past them and Kurama was gone, and as Yusuke just realizing what he had actually just said.

Stupid Yusuke shooting his mouth off again.

“Kurama!” Yusuke shouted after him following at a run, but he would not catch the fox at the rate the kitsune was already going.

Hiei dashed off after them. Though he had not seen where Kurama had run both he and Yusuke had a pretty good idea of where the fox was headed.

His life force could still be felt in the general direction he was running. The stronger the energy and the more flared up it was the easier it was to locate it, and right now Kurama’s energy was going crazy.

`

I loved Hiei.

I still love him… but how can I make this work?

A thousand questions, a thousand explanations, and different reasoning flew through the kitsune’s head at least at a mile a minute.

I know Yusuke likes me. I like him too… but… I don’t love him.

Do I?

No, he knew he didn’t but it was still complicated. He hadn’t intended for Hiei and Yusuke to argue like that and certainly not to run away like he did. But after that he didn’t want to even be around either of them… for the moment.

Yusuke has made his feelings clear before… but after what he just said now… I don’t know.

Kurama tripped over a jagged stone on the sidewalk and fell forward his lungs working furiously from the sprint. This was a park, it was on the other side of the city too. He really had run pretty far.

If Hiei actually IS sorry… then… it’s still confusing.

Kurama groaned and rolled over onto his back his eyes shut as he tried to make his brain work through all the issues that had come up, both in the past few days, and in the past few minutes.

Then there’s Yomi’s offer… He had almost forgotten about that. He could escape to the Makai for a while, and he wouldn’t have to see either Yusuke or Hiei for a time, then maybe he could try and sort things out…

`

“It’s him!”

“He’s here?”

“What luck!”

“Shh! He’ll hear you!”

Unbeknownst to the fatigued fox there was a group of pairs of eyes watching from the shadows as he lay in the park leaving his guard momentarily down.

“But he looks so out of it…”

“He’s probably thinking hard about something…”

“Wonder what it is…”

“He looks so tired…”

“Now is perfect!”

“No! Wait for my signal!”

A short silence followed the order before the same one spoke again.

“Okay… NOW!”

`

Yusuke and Hiei were within only a few more kilometer’s of Kurama’s current location before there was a surge of the youko’s energy before it disappeared completely.

Yusuke gasped as he felt the energy disappear and picked up his pace arriving on a park’s sidewalk. “Kurama!” He cried out looking around for a sign of the kitsune… the disappearance of the fox’s energy could only mean that Kurama had… “Kurama! Answer me!”

Hiei narrowed his eyes as he noticed a few hints about the place that Kurama’s energy had led them. A few strands of the kitsune’s red hair, several high heel foot prints of dirt on the sidewalk along with flat shoes no doubt belonging to Kurama that indicated a struggle.

“Kurama…” Yusuke whispered as he stood his eyes still looking frantically around the area before he hung his head. Hiei frowned, Yusuke giving up so easily?

“He’s not dead,” Hiei told him. Yusuke whipped around to look at him, “See the prints?” Hiei asked pointing to the easily overlooked dirt footprints on the concrete.

“But… what happened then?” Yusuke asked, “these prints don’t lead anywhere, they disappear on this spot.”

“There’s a Makai portal here,” Hiei told him simply. “The majority of the shoe prints are high heeled, what do you think that means?”

“Kurama was kidnapped by a ton of chicks?” Yusuke asked, the idea sounding preposterous. Kurama was way more powerful than any rabid female.

“Fangirls, precisely.” Hiei nodded.

“But why did they take him to the Makai?” Yusuke asked, “and Kurama is way stronger than any girl.”

“Maybe, but probably not an entire group of rabid youkai fangirls,” Hiei told him.

“How do you know they’re youkai?” Yusuke asked.

“The smell.” Hiei answered.

“Well what are we waiting for then?” Yusuke asked suddenly, “We have to save him!”
