A Difference in Names

The next day a school bell sounded signaling the warning of classes commencing in ten minutes. Looking up at the beautiful building the first thought that came to mind was that even your good sense of direction wasn’t going to help you get around this huge school. Meiou High was just as Akira had described; clean, beautiful, and big, but big was definitely an understatement. You then watched the students begin to rush inside the building so as not to be late for their first class.

“Oh God,” you thought your eyes widening at the first sight of the school uniforms, “is it legal to have a skirt that short,” you thought getting nervous. The colors of Meiou High School were black and white, a bonus for you, but you were now hoping that they would allow you to wear the boys’ uniform. The boys’ summer uniform consisted of black shiny dress shoes, black slacks, a thin white, short sleeved dress shirt and a bright, deep red tie. The girls were wearing very short black skirts, the same shoes and shirts as the boys, but instead of a tie, the girls were wearing bright, deep red bow-ties. You didn’t have anything against school uniforms in general but there would be no way that you would be wearing a skirt that short.

“Roselyn!” Akira shouted and you snapped out of your inspection and looked at Akira who looked annoyed. “What’s wrong with you? I’ve called your name eight times,” she scolded crossing her arms.

Smiling sheepishly you then pointed at a girl who was taking her time getting in the school, obviously not bothered about being late for her first class. “I’m not wearing any skirt that doesn’t at least go down two inches above my knees,” you told her firmly.

Akira looked at the girl and began to laugh. Looping her arm with yours, she began to lead you to the school behind the school slackers. “The uniforms are costumed made so if you wanted a skirt that went all the way to the ground then they would make it,” she assured you.

Sighing in relief, you then looked at your new surroundings when you stepped inside the schools main entrance. “Sterile,” was your first thought, a grimace taking over your body. Following Akira, you finally came to the main office and gave your name to secretary behind her desk.

She got up and searched in the filing cabinet behind her for, you were sure, your file. Grabbing what she was looking for she then returned, placed the folder in front of you and opened the folder to the first page which held your basic information and picture. “Kitahana, Ro-ross…”

“Roselyn,” you pronounced for the secretary whose name tag said Kamira, Sakura. Yes that’s right. Before moving to Japan you had added Kitahana to your name just so things wouldn’t become confusing.

Kamira-san was a woman in her mid-thirties but already you could see gray hairs in her bun, but that just enhanced her natural beauty. She smiled at you and removed her reading glasses to get a good look at you. “Ah, so your our new transfer student, well welcome to Meiou High and last but not least Japan,” she said bowing to you.

You bowed back and extended your hand which she shook. “Arigato, Kamira-san,” you thanked formally.

“Wonderful!” she exclaimed pleased at your knowledge in Japanese. “Wait right here while inform the principle of your arrival.” And with that she disappeared behind a door.

You and Akira both sat down in chairs lining the side wall and waited as was asked. “So what do you think so far?” Akira asked quickly.

Akira you had learnt was not very patient, contrary to you. Smiling at her you shrugged your shoulders and expected your surroundings. “It’s different but I’ll know only how I feel about the place when I spend a few days here,” you explained turning back to her.

She nodded her head quickly grabbed a magazine to look at. You just chuckled and grabbed one for yourself.

“Hey did you here?” Shuichi heard from Koji in front of him, addressing Lin next to him. “Supposedly a transfer’s coming to this school,” he continued. Losing interest, Shuichi then went back to his reading paying little attention to their conversation.

“Yeah, I heard from a friend of mine who actually saw her this morning and he said she was one babe,” they both chuckled. “Not only that, but then he bumped into her and her mother in the office and found out that she had the fifth highest entrance test score ever made in Meiou High,” he said in wonderment. This information caught the fox’s interest and began to listen a bit more closely.

“No way!” Koji quietly exclaimed. “Hot and smart, man I’m definitely going to take a shot at this one.” They both laughed again. Shuichi just rolled his eyes and started to pity the poor girl. “Did your friend catch her name?” Koji asked Lin.

“Yeah it’s Kitahana, Roselyn.”

“Roselyn!” Shuichi thought in wonderment and grabbed the shoulder of Lin to get his attention. “What was her last name again?” he asked Lin with anticipation.

Lin and Koji looked at Shuichi confused. “Kitahana,” Lin said cautiously. “Kitahana, Roselyn.”

Shuichi dropped his hand in disappointment and looked down at his desk. “It’s not her,” he mumbled to himself, saddened. Lin and Koji just looked even more confused at Shuichi. Looked at each other and then went back to their work.

“That was foolish of me,” Shuichi thought to himself. “The chances of Roselyn Poirier ever moving here is slim to none.” Sighing to himself he then looked out the window at the beautiful clear sky. “But it would have been nice to finally meet my penpal in person.”
