*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Koenma looked at the last line of the front page – mental illness. After what had happened, he had to strip her of her status for a while, she was too unstable. Saikoubi wasn’t fit right now to help anyone, least of all herself. Her mind was nearly gone, in ruins. Not even the person closest to her had found a way to help her.
It was looking hopeless.
And it was his fault.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Hiei sat up in the bed, silently watching his wife of nearly eight months sit in the window seat and pay no attention to him. She did this every night since her awakening as a mo-zaku. The silence from her was almost overwhelming to the fire demon,
“Maya. Come to bed. You need to rest.”
She turned to him, looking at him as though he were a stranger to her. He knew she knew him, but something was blocking all of her coherent thoughts. He didn’t want to feel pity for her. He wanted to feel the joy she brought him. He wanted to hear her laugh, cry, or scream at him. Anything but this unbearable silence he got from her. Even her infamous wrath would be welcome.
He supposed he should be lucky. When he was around him she seemed calm, placid, and gentle. Yet, when someone else was there to watch her, all hell broke loose. The last time Yusuke and Keiko had watched her, the Rei-kai detective had to physically knock her unconscious to prevent her from jumping out the window. She seemed genuinely afraid of any male but Hiei. When Kurama and Botan had watched her, the grim reaper had held her back from slitting her own throat to get away from the fox demon. It was one moment of sanity she had apparently had after that where she had begged Kurama to do something. She looked him dead in the eye while being held down by Botan, thrashing to get away.
‘I don’t want Hiei to suffer anymore. Make the voices stop! Damn it! Please! Help me!’
Thankfully Yukina had come and helped calm her enough to sit down, but she never really settled until Hiei had come back Everytime, when she saw him, she began clinging to him in pure panic until she either calmed down or passed out. It seemed like when he was gone, it scared her, like he was leaving her and would never come back.
Slowly. As he watched, her eyes became slightly clearer, the darkness of her mind not as consuming at the moment.
“Amaya.”
She walked over to him silently, crawling onto their bed like a cat stalking her prey. When she kneeled above him, she smiled, her eyes clear and bright as she spoke.
“Hiei I love you.”
It startled him to hear her words, no hint of her insanity in her voice. It was clear and free of the pain and sorrow that had laced the words for the last month.
“Love me Hiei. Make Love to me.”
He didn’t question her, hoping if she was asking for him, that maybe she was getting better.
He pulled her close and lay her down, fulfilling one of the promises of their wedding night – to make sure she was happy and fulfilled any time she needed him.
At that time, he needed her just as much.
Even for a demon, touch could be a powerful thing.
