Surprise

All right people, this getting ridiculous! I got 43 more hits on this fic and only two reviews! What's up with that?

A/N: *makes a face* Sorry Katzztar, didn't mean to be so pushy. But you really did nearly fry my poor little brain cells. They're already on overtime.

Tidbit: Did anyone know that Shizuru's name means sizzle? *snicker*

Personal Note: When it hits the fan, it makes a hell of a mess. Yep, that's pretty much what it's like for me right now. Final coming up, first Christmas away from home, Step-dad has to go overseas in a month, Dad has less than three months to live, and Grandpa is having mini strokes. Yep it hit the fan all right. Sucks too.

Again Kuwabara froze, the new information refusing to take root in his brain. "What are you talking about?"

Shizuru sighed and held up her skull pendant with her free hand. Seeing it, her brother's eyes widened even more, and he took out his own pendant. Walking over to her he compared them... they were identical.

"Alright, someone better explain this to me." Kuwabara sighed, sitting in a vacant chair, leaning heavily on the table.

"Do you want the long detailed version or the short and sweet version?" Shizuru asked, taking another puff.

"Short and sweet." The boy mumbled.

"Shi?"

"My pleasure." He smiled at the younger of his two descendants. "In short, I became obsessed with a human woman, your Great Grandmother. I posed as a human, married her and we had your Grandmother. And she in turn had your Mother."

"Maybe you should add in a few more details than that." Shizuru glared at him.

Shi grinned. "As I was posing as a human, I had to create the illusion of growing old and passing away as an old man. Your grandmother, as my daughter could have been immortal, had she chosen to be. But after meeting your grandfather she decided to grow old by his side. Your Mother made the same choice." His eyes grew sad. "That's why she died in the accident."

Kuwabara looked at Shi closely. "So I get to choose now?" He glanced at Shizuru. "What about you?"

"Why do you think I smoke so much?" His sister smirked. "It won't kill me."

"I'll have to think on it." Kuwabara mumbled.

"You have plenty of time to decided, right now you are immortal, but should you choose otherwise I'll grant your request. But please remember Kazuma, once immortality is taken away, it cannot be returned." Shinigami patted his great-grandson's arm.

"Thanks... but I'm confused. I thought Enma was the God of Death, and ruler of Rekkai and all that."

"Enma is the current God of the Dead, I was the first, and I appointed Enma's ancestor when I decided to retire. And unlike many Kami's instead of going to our version of paradise, I decided to hang around this plane of existence." Shi explained.

"Why?"

Shinigami shrugged. "Some things are more important than Paradise. Think of it this way, if I hadn't stayed you wouldn't be who you are now. You would have little or no Spirit Awareness."

"You're the reason I can feel ghosts!" The teen nearly yelled.

"Yep."

"Go easy on him Gramps, this is a lot to take in all at once." Shizuru warned.

"I think he's taking it very well."

Kuwabara cleared his throat. "Why are you telling me all this now?"

The Angel of Death's face took on an annoyed look. "To keep Enma from screwing things up."

Memories of Koenma's sad words of loss entered the not-so-human boy's mind. "Like when he took the baby away?"

Shi did a double take. "Koenma told you about his child?"

Kuwabara nodded.

"Poor boy. Yes, that's part of it."

"And the rest?" Shizuru pried.

"Koenma was supposed to meet his soul-mate about hundred years ago. Enma interfered, he didn't want to lose his little paper pusher. That of course caused a commotion among the Gods and Goddesses of Love, who have held a grudge against Enma ever since. But now Koenma has a chance to be happy, and I've tied Enma's hands so he can't screw it up." Shi smiled giddily.

"Meaning, he can't touch Kazuma because he's related to a God." Shizuru finished.

"Exactly."

Kuwabara stood silently, and left the kitchen, never looking at his 'family'.

"Do you think I said too much?" Shi asked worriedly.

"Don't worry about it, my brother's thick, but if he wants something he'll go after it. No matter how many hits he takes."

He was immortal. He could stay immortal. Live Forever. Think of all the video games a person could collect if they lived forever! No, that wasn't important, but still very tempting.

This was going to take a lot of thinking. He groaned at that, thinking wasn't his strong point. It was much easier to just jump in and damn the consequences.

Still pondering what he should do the young immortal made his way to the bathroom for a much-needed shower.

"Koenma Sir, your Father wishes to speak with you."

The god-ling looked up from his paperwork. He hadn't bothered to change back into his toddler form, deciding that he was much more comfortable as he was.

"What does he want?"

"I don't know Sir."

Sighing, Koenma rose from behind his desk and headed for his Father's office.

"Koenma?"

"Yes Father?"

"Do you want your child back?"

Koenma nearly fell on his face. "W-what?"

"Do you want your mixed-breed brat back?!"

"Um... yes?"

"Very well."

Koenma fell to his knees as a great and shuddering pain filled his abdomen. And then, he could feel it... His unborn child was once again safe in his womb, unchanged and unharmed.

"Thank you Father." The demi-god gasped, holding his stomach as if embracing the life within.

"You've nothing to thank me for. Now Go."

When Koenma returned to his office, he was more than a little surprised to see Shinigami sitting on his desk.

"Why are you sitting on my paperwork?" The younger immortal asked.

"Hmm? No reason. Just came to congratulate you. You'll make a wonderful Mother."

For the second time that day the Junior Lord of the Dead nearly fell on his face.

"How the hell did you find out? It just happened a few minutes ago!" Koenma shouted.

"Really Koenma, why would your Father, being the ass that he is, return your unborn child to you?" Shi asked.

The god-ling had no answer to that, at least not right away, but a thought struck him.

"What did you do?"

"What makes you think I did anything?" Shi asked innocently.

Koenma continued to look at him until Shi shrugged and smiled broadly.

"Let's just say that Enma won't screw things up for you, or take away those you care about ever again. You're free to pursue any being you wish, be they immortal, mortal, or demon." He paused. "And as long as they're single." Shi snickered at his afterthought.

"That doesn't answer my question." The young lord pointed out.

"Let me ask you this... Do you really want to know?"

Koenma thought about that for a moment before he grinned. "No, not really."

"Thought so."

A/N: I actually finished this chap a couple of days ago, and I wanted to wait until I got more than two reviews. But I'm leaving for Kentucky on Friday. (It's a 2-day trip from FL to KY) And I'll be away from the internet for about a week. During that time I'll be visiting friends and sharing all my downloaded anime with them. ^ ^; And seeing my dad's lawyer, he want's to go ahead and sign over his property to me now, less hassle that way. *sniff* Then it's off to Indiana where I'll be near the net again, but it'll be a slow dial-up connection. My mom's net providers sucks and is always kicking her offline. *sighs* I'm gonna miss DSL while I'm gone.

So yeah, you won't hear from me for at least a week, and then I'll try to update when I can. *note to self, take lots of floppy disks* ok, I'm done rambling now.
