Book 7 - Chapter 8
Chapter 7
Keiko’s body was cremated the day after her death, placed in an urn given to them by Kurama, decorated with engravings of heather and trees that swayed in the wind. The Yukimura Noodle Shop was shut down for a week after the funeral, while Keiko’s urn sat in the Ryu and Hinote’s Apartment for the customary 35 days. On the 36th day after her death, Yusuke, Ryu, Hinote, Kyo, Amaya, Kurama and Kaida buried her bones and ashes at the temple on Mt Hiei, with Ayame’s promise to guard them for as long as she was the guardian there.
Yusuke did not react as badly as everyone had thought he would. He did not go on a rampage or lose control. Instead he threw himself into the work of being a grandfather to Kyo and running the restaurant, determined to keep one of the things that reminded him of Keiko going, giving him something to take some of the pain away.
Ayame did become fast friends with Hinote, the older goddess explaining her relationship to the girl and taking her under her wing for periodic training.
Hinote and Ryu were glad for some time off of spirit detective work to take care of Kyo. Amaya took over for a little while, resuming her duties to test out her new skills. Enma himself declared a truce with her, acknowledging her as one of the few demon-gods there were along with Ayame and the former rulers.
*~*~*~*~*~*
Amaya sat in a tree, overlooking the site where they had buried Keiko. The human woman had died six months before, leaving all of them with a hole in their heart whether they recognized it or not. Kurama and Kaida, being pure demon, did understand she was gone, but not what it truly meant. Ryu and Hinote were lucky. Most likely they would never know the sting of mortality, their demon blood leaving them to live long full lives. No Amaya, knew they would never be able to truly empathize with Yusuke. She felt so badly for the battle demon; he had fallen in love with a human woman and knew, the day that his demon blood awakened, that he would someday lose her to her humanity. They had all known it would happen, just not this soon. The poor man’s heart was broken in a thousand pieces, Yusuke having thrown himself into his work and the care of his grandson. He seemed somewhat happy but Amaya had worked with him far too long and knew. Yusuke had lost the thing most precious to him and could not fight, cajole, or threaten anyone to return her to him.
For the last few days that she had been on patrol, she had thought long and hard how that could be her and Hiei. If her blood had not awakened, if she had not become what she had, she would be an elderly human woman, maybe not dying or dead but aging, never being able to fully be with Hiei, spend her life with him. She brushed away the tear that traveled down her cheek, looking up at the stars. She stood watching a star fall directly over the grave of her friend below.
“Thank you, Keiko.”
She bound into the next tree, headed for home. She needed to see him. This was one of those times she needed to touch him, feel him, and know that he would be there for her.

Hiei stood in the shower, enjoying the feel of the scalding water on his back. He put his hand up and grabbed Amaya’s shower gel, smelling the faint traces of cherry blossom and roses that reminded him of her. He put some in is hand, smearing it down his body. He let it flow over his shoulders and chest, down to the curly hairs around his groin, his hand following. He held himself in his hand, the sensation nothing like her touch, the touch he craved. He leaned back against the cool wall, massaging himself and trying to imagine it was Amaya, her hand touching him, her hand on his chest. He moaned her name, head back in ecstasy as he heard the curtain open enough that dark blue hair and green eyes peeked around at him.
“I take that as an invitation.”
Hiei smirked as she came in, the only thing she wore a red hiru stone around her neck. He marveled at her beauty; the small but firm body that she carried with an air of authority, the dark blue, almost ocean black hair that fell past her waist, curling in loose ringlets at the end. He put his hand out to her, taking one hand in hers and putting the other on the small of her back, pulling her close, letting her feel the heat of both his body and the hot water that trickled down their bodies. She put her face close to his chest, trying to inhale the smell of him. She sniffed him a few times, looking at him sideways as she smelled the flowery scent that made up her body wash.
“Something you want to tell me?”
He pushed her against the wall, lifting her into his arms and wrapping her legs around his waist. “I need you. You were gone for too long, after the funeral I…”
She leaned forward and kissed him, pulling on his hair, wrapping it around her fingers and pulling him closer to her, her mouth trying to devour his, pulling him as close as her could. She leaned into him, running her tongue over his fangs and catching her lower lip on the tooth, drawing blood. The rich red liquid trickled from the wounds, the cut on her lip running down his, the one on her tongue running down her mate’s throat. He pressed closer to her, hands running down her body, grabbing her ass and squeezing, nails digging into flesh.
“Hiei…” Amaya’s voice was ragged, deep and breathy as he pulled her closer, holding her tight to him, letting her feel his definite maleness close to her body. He stepped out of the shower, carrying her with him as he walked, kicking the door to the bedroom open and flopping Amaya on their queen size bed, crawling up to her with a feral grin on his face.
“Sweet young Goddess. How will it feel to be ravished and pillaged by a demon?”
He pushed her down, smiling as his face found its way to her shoulder, licking her neck down to her shoulder. She laughed as his mouth ran down her body and back up. He moved to her bite mark, the permanent symbol of him marking her shoulder, running his tongue over it roughly then sinking teeth into her flesh, her body arching up in reaction, not of pain or of pure pleasure, her voice gone, only a moan coming from her throat as her blood leaked down her shoulder.
“Hiei…” She leaned up and sunk her teeth into his shoulder muscle, his blood flowing down her mouth, down her throat, drinking him in. They both pulled away and went back to each other, mouths back to ravaging each other as Hiei moved to be fully above her, moving into her body without warning or ceremony. Amaya acknowledged his entrance with a gasp as he thrust as hard as he could within her, his body attempting to become one with hers. She moaned as he moved within her, his body moving to fill her, find parts of her to touch and feel, parts he had never found before.
Amaya tore into Hiei’s flesh, finger nails digging into his back. She spoke, her voice full of pain. “I need you, Hiei. I can’t lose you. I don’t…”
“I will be by your side, even in death, Koishii.”
He moved one last time, bringing his mate with him into the abyss. He filled her to the brim, letting her milk him dry, the feeling of her around him overwhelming. Her world exploded at the same time, her vision only in colors until it was only pure black, her world containing only one thing, the smell of her fire demon, covered in the perfume of roses and cherry blossoms.
