Book 7 - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Hinote followed behind the rolling incubator in her wheelchair, the baby pushed by Ryu, Hinote pushed by Amaya. They rushed as fast as they dared with the baby in tow, headed for the ICU. They entered the elevator, Ryu pushing the button for the fifth floor.
“How much time did they buy us?”
“Ayame said half a day at least. We only have fifteen minutes of that left.”
The elevator stopped, opening and allowing three people on, two carrying flowers, the other, an older woman, staring at the baby in the incubator.
“Such a cute baby. Can I hold him?”
“Sorry, were going to his grandmother’s room, she’s got priority.”
“Oh just for a minute, it wont hurt…”
The old lady reached for the baby, but pulled back when she received a shock, holding her hand where it was lightly burned. Hinote opened her eyes and smiled sweetly, knowing exactly what she did.
“Are you ok? Be careful, the doctor said that incubator was a bit hot.”
The elevator stopped and the door opened onto the 5th floor, allowing Ryu, Hinote, Amaya and the baby to head out, the still surprised face of the old woman following behind.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Ayame stood at the head of Keiko’s bed, keeping the woman alive and asleep as they waited. She watched as the woman in the bed breathed harshly, her husband sitting in the chair next to the bed, surrounded by her friends, including the most famous thief in the Makai, her oldest daughter’s murderous husband, a famous healer, a Koorime and her daughter, and a very tall, redheaded, loud human male. The motley crew before her was silent now as the one come to collect her stepped through the window, followed by her employer, the usually bubbly spirit guide now red eyed with tears at the task she had begged Koenma to give her, against his better judgment.
Yusuke looked up at Koenma, his eyes hollow as he looked from the young god to Keiko. “Please not yet Koenma.”
Koenma shook his head. “It is not yet her time, but will be soon. I have delayed it as long as I can. I can only assure you hat she will be going to a place where pain and suffering will never touch her again.”
He walked over to Ayame, bowing formally to the demon-goddess. “Thank you Ayame. Could you do one last thing, give Yusuke the fortune that is his?”
Ayame nodded as Ryu, and the rest came in, Hinote coming in quietly but gently and quickly, her body almost healed from the trauma of birth. She went toward Keiko, uncovering the infants face.
“Grandmother?”
Ayame nodded, speaking softly in a language Hinote did not know, Keiko gasping as she awoke. She looked around startled to see Botan, Koenma, and so many friends and strangers around. She looked to her left, seeing Hinote holding the bundle in her arms.
“Hinote?”
She smiled weakly, walking over to Keiko, the dying woman holding her arms out. “His name is Kyo. Kyo Urameshi.”
Hinote handed the infant boy to Keiko, trying to force back the tears but unable to as he watched her mother in law kiss her son.
“Thank you, Hinote. Take care of my son. Ryu take care of your father.”
Ryu took the baby as she spoke, understanding her words. He handed Kyo back to Hinote and closed Keiko’s eyes as Botan put her hand forward, all of them knowing what was happening. Yusuke turned toward Botan as she sat on her oar, ready for her flight. “Keiko… I love you.”
“I love you too Yusuke.”
He saw the shadow of her younger self, her eyes still bright and shining, how she was when they married. “I’ll be watching, take care of yourself.”
He nodded as he unknowingly let tears fall down his face, watching as Botan flew out the window, Keiko holding on, headed for the spirit world and her new beginnings.
“Urameshi, Son of Raizen. Koenma has asked me to give you your fortune. I will tell you truth what will come to pass. Give me your hand and you will know the introduction to the next chapter in your story.”
The battle mo-zaku lifted his hand to the goddess without a word or fight, letting his hand slip into hers, his eyes telling the fact that he barely knew what was going on. Ayame smiled, placing her other hand over his. Her eyes glazed over, shining pure white as she spoke, her voice hollow and cold.
“A woman with the bearing of a queen and the heart of a warrior will come to you and send you on a quest, one that will prove longer than you think. When you find what you seek you will destroy the one that has claim to it, and claim it for yourself. This thing will have been made by a friend, though he believes it gone forever. Be forewarned, Son of Raizen, that which you find may change everything you believe you are.”
