Chapter 05

Kurama smiled to himself as he exited the school grounds. He had finished all his homework in school for today and had ditched the fangirls before they could tail him out of school. Yusuke had called him ahead of time; he had some deal with his mother and cousin so he wasn’t going to be able to come by and get him today.

But that was fine, this served for some off time to relax without anything to bother him after all. But there was a youkai presence nearby. Two actually and both of them he recognized.

“Yomi hasn’t gone back to the Makai yet?” Kurama thought somewhat puzzled and he changed his walking course to intercept where both the strong youkai energies were coming from. It wasn’t much new news to find Hiei’s aura nearby, the fire demon had been hanging around a lot lately, though it was odd since every other time he’d sensed the koorime he had been trying conceal his ki. Now he was letting it out for anyone to know he was there. It was just a bit odd.

Kurama wandered into the park and soon spotted the two youkai.

Sitting on a bench.

Together.

Kurama frowned at what his mind was suddenly leaping to in conclusion. Yeah okay, so they’re sitting together. Kinda close… but they’re talking. Just talking.

Nothing going on there, silly overactive imagination.

No… Okay…

Kurama looked away quickly. It was the most horrible thing he could have imagined. Now they were making out in public, geez, didn’t they sense that he was right here, possibly watching them? No, of course not they were too wrapped up in each other to see that.

Stupid. Fine his overactive imagination had been correct, this once, in it’s wild assumption. Glancing back at the two Kurama noted Hiei’s face. He didn’t look so cold and cruel at the moment.

Sort of innocent, like he was when Kurama had first known him. Why was Yomi the one being looked at with tender eyes? That used to be him damnit!

Wait!

That was it! This was an act! Of course it was!

Now Hiei was trying to ensnare Yomi! Oh the nerve! Of course he was trying to trap Yomi in a failed relationship now too.

Kurama scowled somewhat at the two of them who had gone back to talking, thank Inari. At any rate Kurama needed to warn Yomi!

Yomi whispered something to Hiei and the two of them looked up at the redhead. “Hello, Kurama,” Yomi smiled at him. As if nothing was wrong. Kurama tried to smile back, but the result was more of a grimace.

“Hello, Yomi, Hiei,” Kurama acknowledged the two of them.

Together.

On a bench.

Were previously doing things he did not care to repeat.

“So what are you two doing together?” Kurama asked, even pleasantly. Hiei arched an eyebrow and smirked at him.
That was just too cute… now if only Yomi was gone…

Wait! Bad thoughts! Hiei is in the wrong here! Yomi is the one in trouble! Not with me, with Hiei! Right! I have to warn Yomi and Hiei’s treachery!

“I’d have thought that was obvious,” Hiei said shifted slightly so her fell against Yomi, one of his hands idly clasping around a dark strand of the makai lords thick black hair.

Kurama fought hard to keep from twitching in some way at the action. He had to warn Yomi, Hiei was just being… weird. Yeah that’s it, weird!

Yomi smiled at Kurama as he stood up disengaging himself from Hiei, though giving him a small peck as he got up. “I’ll give you two a moment alone.”

Hiei frowned almost sadly as the demon lord headed off down to the lake where the ducks were, so that he was out of earshot of whatever Hiei and Kurama were going to talk about.

“Hiei, what do you think you’re doing?” Kurama asked him frowning again. Hiei looked surprised by the question.

“What? We’re not together, Kurama,” Hiei told him simply, “You’re with Yusuke now. Is something wrong with me moving on too?”

“That’s not what I was asking,” Kurama hissed trying to keep the slight redness from coming onto his face, faint as it might have been. Any signs he still liked Hiei had to be hidden. Besides, he didn’t like him anyway. “Why are you trying to use Yomi now? The Makai lord isn’t that stupid! He’ll figure you out eventually.”

“What are you talking about Kurama?” Hiei asked standing up, looking at the redhead with a semi tired and almost bored tone to his voice. “Do you really find it so incomprehensible that I can actually be in love with someone?”
He didn’t say it was Yomi, though!!

But he probably meant it…

But he didn’t say it!!

“That, I am sure, is not the case,” Kurama insisted some of the previous blush sneaking through, though at this point it may have become possible to mask as anger.

“Oh?” Hiei said almost amused with Kurama’s reactions. “Can’t it?”

Kurama scowled at him and instead went over to where Yomi was. Hiei didn’t follow him. “Yomi,” Kurama began as he came up to the blind youkai. “Hiei, I’m really sorry, but that guy is really no good for you!”

“Why is that?” Yomi asked turning to him, somewhat surprised.

“It just isn’t!” Kurama declared hottly, “He may be nice now, but he gets mean. He gets cold and cruel and he crushes you completely!”

“Kurama,” Yomi said thoughtfully, “I do believe you sound a bit jealous.”

“Jealous?” Kurama was taken aback. Well yeah he’d been thinking about that… but he wasn’t really jealous of Hiei, and certainly not of Yomi.

“Yes, thought not of me,” Yomi smiled. Kurama looked away scowling somewhat. Ooh, the makai lord had touched a nerve.

“That is the stupidest idea I’ve heard so far,” Kurama scoffed, “I’m with Yusuke now. You know that. I chose to be with him too.”

“Yes, but do you love him?” Yomi persisted, as he picked up a rock from the ground and smoothed the dirt off of it. Kurama was silent. The rock he’s picked up was flat in shape, like a pancake perhaps. “If I remember correctly, you and Hiei used to risk your lives for each other. You even once claimed to love him with more than your heart, body and soul.”

Kurama frowned at the memory. They had done that, and he had once claimed that. “That was a long time ago,” Kurama stated. “Things change, and people change.”

“Yes, but love is unable to die,” Yomi said thoughtfully as he flung the stone out into the water where it skimmed the surface jumping several feet. “Even with time and change.”

Kurama’s cheeks stained darker, “Even if I did… love Hiei still, there’s no way we can make it right between us again.”

“Are you so sure?” Yomi questioned whimsically as the rock sank below the lake to the bottom. He turned to the redhead with a soft smile, “You shouldn’t give up so easily.”

Kurama nodded and headed off again.

Internally Yomi was crying to himself. “Why do I have to be the parental guardian figure here?” Yomi wondered to himself with a sigh. “Then again as long as Kurama was happy, he could also be happy. In the long run he did not see happiness in Kurama’s future with Yusuke. His heart was still torn between the person who he is now bound to, Yusuke, and the person to whom his heart still belongs.”

`

Kurama sat and poured over his homework in the late afternoon. But while his mind should have been concentrating of quadratic equations, instead it was elsewhere. Thinking about what had happened earlier in the park, and what Yomi had told him.

“But I can’t possibly still love Hiei.” Kurama thought, insistently, though more to himself than anyone else. Yet there was still that nagging voice of truth inside his head.

Okay, yes. Fine. He did still love Hiei, but there was Yusuke now.

Kurama groaned resting his head in his arms on his desk. This kind of thing was so confusing, and it didn’t help his mind wouldn’t let him think about anything else at the moment.

He was close.

He could feel Hiei’s energy.

Kurama got up and headed out. His mind would not allow him to rest on his school work for the moment anyway. Maybe if he talked to him he could clear some things up.

Following the energy it led him down into a dark area where Hiei and Yomi were… um… together… different than before.

Kurama put his hands over his mouth to keep from screaming in shock at the sight of what they were doing before quickly turning the other way and managing not to hurl.

They weren’t speaking to each other at the moment, and Kurama didn’t have to look at them, but the sounds they made while with each other hardly left much to anyone’s imagination. Kurama hurried away again out of ear shot to keep from coughing out his inards.

Yusuke.

Or Hiei.

If he didn’t decide quickly he could lose Hiei.

His heart still belonged to the fire demon.

But now there was Yusuke…

A wind blew past as the last of afternoon gave way to the darker evening. He had made his decision. “Yomi,” Kurama said after a moment, sensing the demon behind him, no longer engaged with Hiei in any case. “I’ve decided.”

“The choice was always yours to make, Kurama,” the demon reminded him as he came to stand beside the kitsune. “And you shouldn’t let this old youkai interfere with matters such as this.”

“I’m leaving for the makai now,” Yomi continued not giving Kurama the chance to tell him what he had decided. “I’ll be seeing you, maybe, Kurama.”

“You will still always be welcome in my home.” He reminded putting a hand on his shoulder before he left it allowing the gateway between makai and ningenkai to open for him and closing behind him as he left.

“I know what I have to do now,” Kurama whispered to the ever growing darkness as night fell in around him.
Hiei watched only just out of reach of being sensed or heard, and as he watched the kitsune he wondered if his and Yomi’s plan had worked. Even just the tiniest bit…
