Book 3 - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Koenma was headed to the home of the Amaya Saikoubi. He had a question to ask her concerning the demon Mukuro.
Mukuro had been found inside the gate to the demon world, near death. She had been nearly drown, with more broken bones and open wounds than most demons would ever heal from. She would never fully heal from the damage done. Several lesser demons had said they saw Amaya with ‘a fire demon’ drop the near-corpse there and then leave. He had no proof, but he needed to investigate a bit anyway.
He reached the door and immediately felt the presence of two demons in the room behind the door. He stopped and thought better of it, opting for getting Yusuke as backup, along with Kurama.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Kurama, Yusuke, tell me what you feel behind that door.”
Kurama stepped up and opened his mind, feeling for what was there. “It’s Hiei, and it’s Saikoubi. No. Not..Yes. It’s her but it’s not right at all.”
“It’s her and Hiei, but it’s not right. I don’t understand.”
Kurama knocked on the door, finding it wasn’t even properly closed and fell open. He stuck his head through the open part and saw Hiei and Amaya siting in the window seat, staring out into space. They didn’t even turn to Kurama or the others until Yusuke opened the door wider and knocked down the coat rack behind the door. Even then, only Hiei acknowledged them.
Kurama spoke first, stepping forward to speak to his old friend. “Hiei, Saikoubi. What’s going on. I…”
Koenma put his hand up to silence both Kurama and Yusuke, turning to the dark-haired man beside him.
“Yusuke, step out for a minute.”
“But…”
Kurama turned to him. “Just go out and count to ten and come back. For once, can’t you do as you are told?”
The rei-kai detective left and Koenma’s suspicions were confirmed.
“Hiei, did you wake her up? Did you know about this?”
The Fire demon shook his head. “I didn’t know. Not until a day ago.”
Yusuke came back in, confused as Saikoubi looked out the window silently, Hiei holding her like she would break if he moved her too much. He watched them silently as they communicated silently with their minds, picking up the aura of a demon surrounding Amaya.
“That’s not Hiei’s aura. What the…”
Koenma looked at the girl, who seemed to be trying to make a bowl of water obey her commands, letting it slosh around, seemingly unaided, in a bowl near her feet.
“A water Ma-zoku.”
Kurama scowled as he watched Amaya struggle with her new powers.
“What woke it up Hiei.”
“A broken heart.”
“Broken Heart? Who would…?”
Hiei leaned the silent Amaya back to rest on him, comforting her as best he could. “She thought I had hurt her, betrayed her. It was enough.”
Kurama looked confused. “You two aren’t that close Hiei.”
“Kurama you’re a fool. I’ve been sleeping with her for over two years and living with her for the last nine months. We married each other seven months ago. If you paid attention to anything you would have figured it out by now.”
Kurama opened his mouth to give a retort when Koenma shook his head. “For now let’s leave it alone. If we have another partial demon on our team, then we need to figure out what is going on. From now on, Hiei, you need to help her understand her powers. Amaya is going to need to take some time to get used to this. First though, Amaya…”
She turned her head and looked at Koenma, looking genuinely surprised he was there. “Oh, Koenma.” She turned her head slightly and saw Yusuke and Kurama. “Hey Yusuke, Kurama. When did you guys get here?”
Kurama scowled, thinking that she could have been that far into her thoughts that she never knew they were there. Koenma spoke up, inwardly concerned about the newly discovered mo-zaku. “Do you know what happened to Mukuro?”
“Yes.”
“Well?”
She smiled, a smile as evil and cunning as Hiei’s. “I tried to kill her.”
Kurama stepped back. She, a mo-zaku, had almost killed one of the former demon lords? “What the…”
Koenma spoke before Kurama could finish. “Why is she still alive Saikoubi?”
She turned away looking back out at the sunset. “Hiei held me back. Told me not to kill her. She deserved to die for kissing him. I wanted her dead.”
Hiei held her close, his forehead to the back of hers. “Her mind almost didn’t make it. She almost snapped. She is far enough gone that time is the only thing that will heal her. She’s going to be no good to anyone for a while, Koenma.”
The tall spirit nodded pointing to the door. “Do what you can. Kurama, Yusuke, come with me.”
They left, leaving Hiei and Amaya alone in the apartment, Amaya looking out the window, Hiei showing his affection by kissing her shoulder. Kurama was the first to speak when they were outside the door.
“What the hell is wrong with her?”
Koenma shook his head. “She wasn’t as lucky as Yusuke. She went off the deep end; her trauma was bad enough in her mind to cause this. Give Hiei time, he’ll be able to help her. Until then. I am going to see what I can find out about her. We need find out everything about Amaya Saikoubi and her past. Yusuke, You stay close to Hiei and Saikoubi. Help her understand what’s going on. Kurama, stay close as well and when she’s more coherent, try find out what’s going on in that dark mind of hers. If we end up with her going south, he may have to take care of the situation.”
Yusuke scowled. “You don’t mean…”
Koenma nodded. “I am afraid I do, Yusuke. And I don’t want to have to do that.”
