What I Want To Know Is…

“Botan is confused right now over Urameshi. You do know that do you?” Hiei scolded.

“We’re friends.”


Shizuru opened the door when Botan came home. Yusuke was there doing his assignment with Kuwabara.

Botan plopped down on the couch. “A little bird told me you were at the park this afternoon.” Said Shizuru while Yusuke and Kuwabara looked on.

“What little bird?” asked Botan. She looked at the peony and smiled.

“Nice flower.” Said Yusuke. He was looking at Botan intently.

She was quiet at lunch today, but she seemed different now, Yusuke thought.

“The little bird wants to know how the fishes are at the lake today…” Shizuru answered her question. She drank her coffee to hide her smile.

“The uh… fishes were fine.” Botan said not looking at anybody.

“You went there alone?” asked Kuwabara. Yusuke’s head came up and waited for her answer.

“No.” she responded.

Who was she with? Yusuke asked himself. Shizuru was looking at Yusuke then glanced back at Botan.

“Oy… It doesn’t matter who she’s with.” Shizuru started. “It’s not like she’s with someone, right? You go girl!” she said, not caring that Yusuke was glaring daggers at her.

Botan stood up to go to her room and change. She felt awkward after their brief interrogation. She placed the peony on her dresser. After that she went to the kitchen to help out with dinner.

“Hiei saw you.” Shizuru told her. Botan was busy chopping vegetables.

“Hmmm. Hiei was your little bird…” Botan said quietly. Honestly, she didn’t know what to make of her afternoon with Kurama. We are friends, she thought.

“Yes. He wasn’t spying on you though. He was there because more trees are there for him to sleep on.” Shizuru laughed. It was not new to her that Hiei was one big sleepy head.

They ate dinner a little late than usual. Shizuru was talking animatedly. Kuwabara was eating nonstop and Shizuru was teasing him about Yukina. Yusuke looked at Botan. She was usually a match for Shizuru during dinner conversations. Right now she was just moving her food around her plate.

“Botan…” Yusuke started. She looked up, her lavender eyes meeting his brown ones.

“Why? Is something wrong with the food, Yusuke?” she asked.

I was gonna ask her the same question… Yusuke thought. Instead he said, “Are you alright?”

Botan blinked at him and realized she hasn’t eaten anything. She just smiled and took a bite and slowly ate her food.

What’s going on with you, Botan? Yusuke thought. He didn’t know why he felt that way, but he can’t help it. And what’s going on with me? The more he pondered, the more irritated he became because he just got confused with no answer to his questions. After dinner, the four of them chilled out at the living room.

“I wonder what Yukina is doing right now… I bet she’s taking a bath…” said Kuwabara, fantasizing about his crush.

“Hah! I bet she’s at home now and not once has she ever thought of you.” countered Shizuru. Kuwabara threw a crumpled paper at her, grumbling how his sister never supported his love life.

“Stop fantasizing and help me out with the homework okay?” Yusuke said a bit loud than he intended to. Realizing what he did, he smiled sheepishly.

After finishing their homework, Yusuke stood up and made to go home. He thanked Shizuru for dinner. Botan walked him outside.

“How are you, Yusuke? Did you talk to Keiko yet?” asked Botan. Yusuke blinked at her.

What? She’d rather talk about that? What I want to know is… Yusuke scratched his head. Not knowing what to do with his hands, he shoved them in his coat. He cleared his throat.

“Uh… no, not yet.” He replied. “You went to the park this afternoon, right?” He asked. Botan nodded. Yusuke hesitated a little before he continued.

“Who were you with?” Yusuke asked quietly.

Botan looked at him startled. He was looking back at her. A cool wind came as she answered. She took in his eyes and spoke.

“Kurama.”
