Chapter 44: Let the Games Begin!
Updated: March 3, 2010
Disclaimer: See Chapter One.
Added: I do not own nor make a profit from using the song: Angel by Within Temptation. I am only using this song because I thought it was the perfect song to describe Sensui and wanted to use it so very badly in this story. So to make it clear; I do not own the song nor the band that sings it and I certainly am not making a profit from using it in this fan fic. Thank you ^_^.
I do not own the show COPS, I only mention it in here as a reference and I do not make a profit by mentioning it in this fan fic.
Warnings: See Chapter One.

Chapter 44: Let The Games Begin!
It felt like hours, however you finally reached the destination the truck seemed to be heading. It was a cave, something that looked like out of one of those scary movies. Something that a psychotic killer would use as his place to bring victims to so he could slice them up. You shook your head.
'I gotta stop watching those horror films.' you thought to yourself.
Your thoughts were interrupted as you felt yourself lifted up out of the truck by your restraints and dropped hard onto the ground. You groaned, as you were now face first on the ground. A groan next to you let you know that Kuwabara was experiencing the same thing you were.
Before you could stand up, you felt someone hold you down as they tied your arms.
“Geeze, I feel like I'm in COPS or something...” you grumbled under your breath, earning a chuckle from the person who was trying you up.
You struggled against whoever was tying you up; however they were much stronger than you and pulled you up onto your feet roughly after your restraints were firmly in place. You also found a rope was attached to your restraints. It was like you were on a leash. You growl softly.
'This sucks...' you thought, ' This is so not good..damn my job and me having to miss these episodes. If I watched it maybe, just -maybe- I could have some peace about knowing what the hell is suppose to happen and what the hell these guys want. But NO my work has to suck and make me suffer through this hell!'
You heard a growl from next tot you, causing you o stop your cursing of your job and look over. There was Kuwabara, trying to escape from being tied up and failing miserably at it. You watched in horror as the man with the tentacle like appendages picked him up and slammed him down a few times.
“STOP THAT!” you growled, struggling against your own restraints. “Leave him alone or I swear I'll kick you so hard you won't be able to go to the bathroom for month!”
This comment made all the guys, including Kuwabara wince in pain at just that thought, however the man with the tentacles turned to you with an evil smirk; not without slamming Kuwabara down face first one last time. He began to wrap the ropes around Kuwabara's arms before pulling him up on to his feet.
“Is that better?” he asked with sarcastic tone to his voice.
Your face scrunched up as you narrowed your eyes and gave a low growl at him. You really didn't like this guy. There was something...familiar? Yes, something familiar about him and it was something you knew you didn't like. It was as if it was someone you knew and loathed so very much. However, yo9u couldn't think of anyone like that, no anyone that was still alive anyway.
“Stop fooling around.” Sensui spoke, his voice smooth yet emotionless.
You felt a chill go down your spine as he stood behind you as he spoke. He gave you a creepy feeling. There was something wrong with this guy, he seemed to have too many things going on in his mind. His aura was just too confusing.
“Let's see how far Itsuki has gotten with the opening.” Sensui said with a smirk.
He tugged on your rope, forcing you to follow behind him. You growled, as you couldn't do anything but that. You heard Kuwabara growl as well, from behind you. He was also being dragged behind the man with the tentacles.
You could tell that it was going to be a long road into the cave before you reached what was considered the 'hide out' for these guys, and you hoped that you could figure something out on the way. You knew you had to think of something, or you and Kuwabara would really be in deep shit.
A Few Hours Later...
“How long will it take to reach Itsuki?” Kurama asked, staring at the entrance to the hideout.
It had taken what felt like forever to reach the cave, however Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei, and Mitari were there; standing outside of the cave entrance; with the truck that had brought you and Kuwabara to it parked right outside.
Hiei had joined in after defeating Haigiri and saving Yusuke. Mitari was the only one who knew how to navigate through the cave and was trusted enough to lead the small group through the cave with hopefully no problems. The sun was a little more then half way in the sky. However, there was a chilly breeze in the air and a feeling of calm before the storm.
“At a cautious pace, I'd say about two hours.” Mitari said, glancing at Kurama. “If we go undetected.”
Mitari was the only one who appeared worried about going in. However, he had reason to be as he had been betrayed by what he thought was his 'family'. They had used him and thrown him aside. Now here he was, bringing the enemy to their door and who knew what would happen after they entered.
Mitari let out a breath and decided it was now or never.
“Come on. This way.” he said, entering the cave, followed closely by the other three.
Kurama took out a seed and tossed it to the side, on the ground before taking out a mini flash light he had in his pocket. Yusuke raised an eyebrow at the red head.
“Blazing our trail, just in case.” Kurama said with a warm reassuring smile towards Yusuke.
The group continued through the cave in silence, Kurama dropping a seed every so many steps. It wa a half an hour later when they reached another fork in the road.
“We've taken twenty forks so far.” Yusuke said with a sigh, looking back through the road they had taken and seeing the small lights that showed the way back.
“We'd be lost without Kurama's glow buds.” he added.
“There's a large cavern up ahead. That's about the half way point.” Mitari said, pointing up the road.
After walking a few more feet, Mitari stopped.
“Hold it!” He said, making the three stop.
“Uh oh...that door! It's new!” Mitari said, looking at where there should have been another cave.
There was a door in the tunnel that was huge and had a G symbol on it.
“The gate-keeper's work?” Kurama asked, studying the door.
“No...Itsuki has to stay with the portal. I'm not sure who's behind this.” Mitari said, trying to remember any one on that team that could make something like this door.
Yusuke rubbed his chin in thought. The door seemed a bit familiar to him.
“Hmmm...something about it seems familiar.” Yusuke said.
As if that was the magic words, a voice that sounded like from one of those arcade video games appeared out of thin air.
“Welcome to Devil City!” You are the seven chosen warriors! The city will only know peace if you manage to defeat the evil Gamer King!”
“It's 'Game Battler'!” Kurama said, blinking at the door, a bit stunned.
“That's right!” Yusuke said, a little annoyed and a bit freaked out while pointing at the door, “That was the opening sequence!!”
“Game Battler?” Hiei asked, glancing at Kurama.
“A video game.” Kurama answered glancing in Hiei's direction before looking back at the door.
Hiei turned his attention back towards the door as well.
“So Amanuma set this up!” Mitari said a bit in awe.
Kurama glanced at Hiei, who still seemed a bit unsure what was going on and decided to explain to his demon friend.
“It's a game where you must defeat the evil Gamer King, the master of all genres of games, to bring peace to Devil City. The Gamer King challenges the player with sports games, fighting games, trivia games, and puzzle games. The player must win four out of seven matches. Its so popular that kids hold 'Battler Parties,' where friends with different areas of expertise band together to try to win the game.” Kurama explained.
Hiei snorted. He wasn't interested in something so stupid and idiotic as this video game.
“Welcome to my territory. I don't know how many of you are out there...” cam a kid's voice from behind the door.
“Amanuma's voice!” Mitari shouted, now sure that it was him who made this door.
“But in my territory, you have to follow the rules of the game. Seven warriors are chosen, so seven warriors there must be!” Amanuma said.
“Amanuma's territory recreates games in real life. Anyone who isn't a part of the game can't set foot inside his territory.” Mitari said, a little worried.
The gang all looked at the door thinking over what should be done.
“So we have to join in, eh?” Yusuke said, rubbing his chin in thought. “He must think a lot of his gaming skills.”
“It also trumps our strategy. We can't go forward without our entire group.” Kurama said.
“Wait here! I'll go fetch the others!” Mitari volunteered and was about to run back through the cave.
The four guys had left Genkai, Botan, Yana, and Kaito close to where the cave entrance was, it was lucky for them that they were still outside waiting for them.
“NO! We ALL go!” yyusuke said, crossing his arms over his chest as if saying he was the leader and no one calls the shots unless it was he.
“It'll take time,” Kurama said, “But we don't dare split up.”
An Hour Before the Guys Entered the Cave...
It had taken two hours to reach what was their 'hideout'. It wasn't much. It appeared to be an underwater pond. However, there was some dry land that had a small couch that sat in front of a table that had a TV and VCR. You had almost laughed at seeing it. It had been such a long time since you had seen one of those. You were so use to seeing DVD players. It made you feel like you had taken a time machine or something. Although, you had grown up with the VCR, so after that thought you felt sort of old.
You were plopped near a rock, as was Kuwabara once the two of you had arrived. Your hands were tied in front of you and attached to your feet, which were also tied. You weren't going anywhere now that was for sure.
You watched as Sensui spoke to the other member of the group that had kidnapped you; who appeared to be no older than eleven years old. Soon, that young boy headed back into the cave that you had just exited from. You sighed and leaned back against the rock and closed your eyes. You didn't know what to do. There really wasn't anything else you really could do but wait for Yusuke and the rest of the crew to come and save you and Kuwabara.
You heard something and opened your eyes. Sensui had turned on the TV as well as the VCR. He hiot play and an image appeared on the screen. Your eyes widened as you realized that it was that tape. The tape that Mitari had described! You looked away. You weren't going to watch that tape, no way, no how! You got nightmares from just watching horror films! Although, you did love watching those, but that was besides the point!
“Don't look! Its that tape!” You said, turning to Kuwabara who was looking at the screen.
He blinked at it for a moment before it appeared to dawn on his as well. He closed his eyes and decided it was better to keep them closed.
Sensui chuckled.
“It's a masterpiece. I think one of the Underworld's best works really. It opened my eyes. I realized that human beings were no better than demons themselves.”
You turned your eyes towards Sensui and saw he had left the couch and was walking towards you and Kuwabara.
“People are cruel and vile creatures that need to be punished.” Sensui said with a sadistic grin.
You shivered under that gaze he had as he came closer. He stood in front of you and Kuwabara. Kuwabara had his eyes open now, having sensed the man coming closer and felt that it was safer to keep his eyes open, especially with that guy in front of him.
“Not all of them.” you said, casing Sensui to look at you with a twisted grin.
You shuttered as he started at you; as if into your soul.
“All of them. Every single last one of us, us humans have that desire. The desitre to destroy, to kill, to cause pain. We think too highly of ourselves. However, we are the onese who are the monsters.” Sensui said.
You glared up at him. You hated this guy. He was nothing but a liar, deceiver, and he manipulated people into believing that they deserved to die and that the sins of other men where their own sins. It wasn't right. And now, now it seemed he was trying to recruit you and Kuwabara. It made you sick. You growled up at him. You didn't know what to say to him, but a song came to your mind. You snickered ot yourself. It was funny. It seemed there was a song for almost any situation. You felt as if you were turing this show into a musical; however, it wasn't your fault that you loved to sing and you especially loved to sing songs that fit the situation.
However, you felt this song was perfect for this very moment. It perfectly described what Sensui was and you felt that you needed to sing it as it just felt perfect. You took in a breath. Kuwabara groaned from next to you. You smirked as it was funny Kuwabara seemed to know when you were about to sing. However, you turned your full attention to the man standing in front of you and began to sing the song that should have been the guy's theme song.
Sparlking angle I believe
You were my savior in my time of need.
Blinded by faith I couldn't hear
All the whispers, the warning so clear.
I see the angels
I'll lead them to your door
There's no escape now,
No mercy no more
No remorse cause I still remember
The smile when you tore me apart.
(Sensui raised an eyebrow at you. It was strange to him that you would be singing at a time like this. However, he found it quite amusing at the same time. He had a small smirk on his lips as he put his left hand against his cheek and holding his arm uip with his right hand. He appeared to be listening to you 'speak' as it were. Kuwabara gave you a 'you gotta be f-en kidding me?! Seriously, you are singing now?!' look; however, you ingnoredh im and lookedu p at Sensui with a defiant yet a sad look. Itsuki was sitting in a boat in the middle of the min underground lake. He had been there the entire time it seemed. He also was there when you first were brought into this cave. He kept his eyes closed as he was concentrating on opening up the portal which was behind him and which looked like it was starting to have demons crowding the opening.)
You took my heart
Deceived me right from the start.
You showed me dreams,
I wished they'd turn into real
You broke a promise and made me realize.
It was all just a lie.
(Your voice was filled with emotion as you thought about Mitari and how he must have felt. This man, standing in front of you had deceived the blond haired man, along with six other people; making them think that he truly cared about them and wanted to help them. To make them see what they 'really' were; which were monsters. It was all a lie and to find that out about someone you put your faith in, well, that hurts more then any physical injury. Your eyes glassed over as your mind began to pick up images of how Sensui deceived each member of his 'group'. Sensui narrowed his eyes. He could feel you reaching into his mind. He had blocked you out however, you were somehow able to pull information out of his mind and read it. Itsuki hadn't paid attention until he sensed his leader was becoming tense. He opened one eye to watch the scene going on back on the shore. Gourmet, or rather the man with the tentacle appendages was off to the side looking bored. Kuwabara just sat there staring at you. He could sense the feelings that were pouring off you. He could tell that something was wrong with you and that it wasn't good.)
Sparkling angel, I couldn't see
Your dark intentions, your feelings for me
Fallen angel, tell me why?
What is the reason, the thorn in your eye?
I see the angels
I'll lead them to your door
There's no escape now
No mercy no more
No remorse cause I still remember
The smile when you tore me apart
(You were filled with emotions from Mitari, who was now in the cave. You didn't realize that you were now connecting with him via his emotions. He was filled with so much hurt and pain that your eyes began to water at the intensity of the feelings. However, you continued to sing as you felt that Sensui deep down did have some sort of emotion other than hate and you felt that you could stir something up, as it was really stirring up feelings that you had kept hidden for a very long time. Sensui looked at you with a look that was cold. He was having an inward battle between all the different personalities that were deep within his body. They were fighting over what you were singing about, most of them saying that you should be shut up; however, Sensui found himself not really listening to those voices, for once. He found it interesting, as he hadn't seen something like what you were doing. Itsuki had both of his eyes opened now. He could sense the inner turmoil with in his leader. However, there was nothing he could do as he wasn't able to move from the boat. Kuwabara looked at you and didn't know what to do. He saw that you appeared to be possessed by something. The last time he saw something like that from you was back in the Dark Tournament. He was awake during some of your fight with Toguro. He saw how you fought him and how it didn't seem like it was really you. It scared him then and it scared him now.)
You took my heart,
Deceived me right from the start.
You showed me dreams,
I wished they'd turn into real
You broke a promise and made me realize
It was all just a lie.
Could have been forever
Now we have reached the end.
(Tears fell down your face, however your voice stayed steady as you continued to sing. Emotions from not only Mitari but as well as Amanuma and Sensui himself, began to flood your entire body. Sensui was filled with so many deep emotions that seemed to be bottled up tight with in him and that was what you were mostly feeling. They felt like they wanted to burst out from the man and there was something keeping a firm hold on them, making him not able to feel anything. You felt sorry for this man and it showed on your face as you continued to cry and sing. Sensui looked at you with cold eyes as he tired to control those feelings that you were feeling from him. He had kept them under control for too long to let them all out, and because of a stupid girl like you. Itsuki knew this wasn't good. All he had worked for, all the planning his leader had gone through, it appeared it was in danger with you being there. Kuwabara wanted to hold you. He didn't understand why you were crying and to him some of the lyrics appeared to be directed at himself! He felt guilty for not being able to share how much he loved you however, he knew that if he did it would hurt you so very much more then not knowing. He knew he couldn't hold them in for much longer but he was sure he could hold himself back from telling you. He couldn't hold back his actions but he could certainly hold back his words.)
This world may have failed you
It doesn't give the reason why
You could have chosen
A different path in life
(Sensui seemed to flinch at the line you sung as your eyes filled with even more tears as your voice shook filled with emotion. You could feel yourself beginning to wear down. It was too much emotion for one person to handle and it boggled your mind that Sensui could have all that emotion bottled deep inside him for as long as he had. Itsuki looked grimly at his leader. He saw how vulnerable his leader was becoming. If you continued to sing then it would tear down Sensui's plans and ruin what he and Itsuki had planned. Kuwabara slowly began to move towards you, without anyone noticing as they were all focused on you. Kuwabara wanted to be close to you, to try to comfort you by at least being next to you, maybe have your head lean on his shoulder; something!)
The smile when you tore me apart
You took my heart
Deceived me right from the start
You showed me dreams
I wished they'd turn into realization
You broke a promise and made me realize
It was all just a lie
Could have been forever
Now we have reached the end.
(Your voice began to grow weaker as the tears began to slow down. You were becoming tired from the emotion and it was draining. Kuwabara finally reached your side and yet, it didn't seem to help as you came closer to the end of the song. Your body wobbled a bit as the full force of all the emotions came right at you as you drew closer to the end of the song. Itsuki seemed to relax as he saw the shape you were in. It wouldn't be much longer before you would pass out and not interfere with the plan. Sensui seemed to be able to bring himself back to being in control of his feelings and glared coldly at you.)
You finally ended the song. Your eyes drooped a bit as your head nodded a bit. You were so tired. You noticed how close Kuwabara was. If you weren't so tired you would have tried to hide the blush that was over your face, however you didn't really care if he or anyone else saw it for that matter. All you knew was the emotional roller coaster was finally over and it had drained you of any and all strength you had left. Your eyes slowly closed as the last few tears fell from your eyes.
Kuwabara jumped as you fell over resting your head in his lap. Kuwabara's entire body turned red as you fell asleep in his lap. Sensui chuckled, earning a growl from Kuwabara. Sensui just snickered before turning around and heading back o the couch. He had already missed ten minutes of the movie. Itsuki let out a relieved sigh before closing his eyes and turning all of his focus back at the task that was behind him. Gourmet was happy you were finally done with the singing. However, he didn't know what to do but watch the TV from where he sat.
Kuwabara looked down at you. You had tear stains streaked down your face. He wished he could wipe them away, but his hands were tied in his lap and you were sleeping on top of them; which made it harder to move. Not like he could move well before, but still. He sighed and leaned back against the rock and stared up at the cave ceiling.
'Where the hell are you Urameshi?'he thought before closing his eyes and falling asleep himself; your head in his lap.
Around the Same Time In a Different Part of the Cave...
“Oh brother...” Genkai grumbled as she stared at the door that had the big G on it.
The entire group was now there; that being: Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei, Mitari, Genkai, Kaito, and Yanagisawa.
“Welcome to Devil City! You are the seven chosen warriors!” came the voice again, that sounded like an announcer for the game.
The door began to open and light began to pour out from behind the doors.
The group entered into the brightly lit room and were stunned to find what was exactly behind the door. It felt like they were all transported from the dark and dreary cave into a room. There were piepes and machinery wires and such making up the room. It seriously look like a room out of a sci-fi flick.
“You finally have seven, I see....good. Let's get rollin!”
The group turned their attention in the direction of that voice. At the far end of the room was a huge screen. However, the voice didn't come from the screen but from the figure dressed in what looked like an oversized yellow hoodie. The hoodie covered the entire body of the person, only having the shoes sticking out from the oversized garment. There were two bull like horns on top of the hoodie as well as a big G on the hoodie's hood in-between the two horns.
A closer look at the person was discovered it appeared to be a small boy possibly no older than elven years old. He hand sandy blond hair, which could be seen along with his big blue eyes and the small group of freckles that crossed his nose.
“How is this game played Kurama?” Yusuke asked glancing in Kurama's direction.
“Why? Don't you know?” Kurama answered, turning to look at Yusuke fully.
Everyone and their mother knew that one of Yusuke's favorite pastimes was hanging out at the local arcade; when he wasn't beating Kuwabara up that is.
Yusuke gave Kurama a cheeky grin.
“Um...no I just read about it. I only play fighting games. This one seemed boring so I never picked it up.”
“Alright...” Kurama said, turning back to where the young boy sat. “See that slot machine?”
Yusuke and the rest of the group looked next to the young boy. There was an oversized slot machine. The kind you would find in a casino with the old fashion kind where you would pull down the lever and you tried to get three of the same kind in a row. At the moment, all three panels had questions mars. Standing next to the slot machine near the lever was a weird looking creature that didn't seem like a demon but didn't really look like a human either. It reminded Yusuke of a badly drawn version of the ogres that worked for Koenma in the Underworld.
“That decides the game and the level of difficulty. Levels are one to ten.” Kurama began to explain. “We paly one game each, for a best of seven.”
“So, are you ready?” the kid asked, “I mean, what's with all the jabber, huh? Aren't you in a HURRY? Get goin' or I won't play at all.”
The kid seemed to be a real kid as his impatience was worse than Yusuke's.
“Snotty brat!” Yusuke growled.
“He's assumed the Gamer King character.” Kaito said, pushing his glasses up with his pointer finger.
“We need a strategy.” Kurama said, glancing at the kid for a few moments.
“Who's played this game before?” Kurama asked, turning to look at the group.
“I have.” Kaito said.
“Me too.” Mitari said as well.
“And me.”
Yusuke's eyes blinked down in surprise at his former master.
“YOU'VE played this game?!”
“Yep. Pretty good at it, too...” Genkai answered, giving Yusuke the peace sign.
“With me, that's four...” Kurama said.
He was happy that most of the group had played it before. It would have been harder if only Kurama and Kaito had played the game.
“But who's actually won the game?”
That was the real question. This question would determine how the group would play against this kid.
“I once got through all levels.” Genkai said.
“I've won seven times out of ten. Against the game's Gamer King, that is.” Kaito said, looking at the kid who was dressed up and acting like the game's Gamer King.
Kurama glanced at Kaito with a serious look.
“Yeah...a real-life Gamer King could be a trickier proposition. In fact, we should assume we all have a whole new challenge ahead of us. We want three wins in a row straight off.” Kurama said.
Yusuke blinked a bit in confusion, not understanding why Kurama would say that.
“Huh?”
“The Gamer King lets his minions fight until his opponents manage three wins.” Mitari explained, catching Yusuke's attention.
“I could never manage that myself,” Mitari said while pointing at himself, “Though I always aced the sports category.”
“BRRRRTT! Times up!” Amanuma said, obviously getting sick of the group's talk and wanting to start the game.
“Let the games begin!”
“Very well.” Kurama said with a serious look.
“Master Genkai, Mitari, and Yanagisawa...” Kurama said, looking at each individual.
Yanagisawa blinked and pointed at himself.
“ME?!”
“You three go for the first wins. Kaito, Hiei, Yusuke and I will do the rest.” Kurama said, ignoring the tall young man.
“Spin the slots!” Amanuma said.
This had caught everyone in the group's attention as they watched the ogre pull the lever and watched as the three slots began to spin. Soon each slot stopped. The first slot stopping at SPORTS, the second on TENNIS, and the last on LEVEL 7.
“The first game is tennis.” Amanuma said with a smirk.
“Right!” Mitari said, pointing at himself. “This one's for me!”
A muscle built ogre began to appear next to Amanuma. He was see-through and appeared like a hologram. Yusuke snorted with a smirk.
“Ya know, if (YAFN) was here she'd make a joke about it being like watching Star-Trek or something...” Yusuke said before frowning.
He really hoped you were safe, not to mention Kuwabara.
'Don't worry you guys...we'll be there soon and kick that Sensui dude's ass.” Yusuke thought.
Kurama looked at Yusuke and saw that Yusuke appeared calm on the outside, however it was obvious that he was making himself calm.
'Its amazing he hasn't done anything rash.' Kurama thought.
'There's still time for that...' Yoko thought in Kurama's mind, 'I wish he would tho...maybe if we follow his lead, (YFN) would be in our arms by now.'
Kurama mentally rolled his eyes and let out a sigh before closing his eyes.
'I'm worried about her too, however, we can't just rush in without planning. You know that.'
'I have a plan....I plan on ripping out that bastard's throat. Especially if he has touched her.' Yoko growled.
Kurama sighed and mentally shook his head. However, he couldn't help but agree that he too would want the man's blood if you and even Kuwabara were both harmed in any way.
'We will play it by ear.' Kurama told his alter ego before opening his eyes and watching Mitari score another point.
“Remember how we were outcasts at school?” Amanuma asked, looking at a sweating Mitari. “Sensui said we each had a different reason why.”
“Hey! They're playing, so shut up!” growled Yusuke as he glared at the hooded boy.
“The Gamer King is allowed to heckle.” Kaito said, glancing at Yusuke as he pushed his glasses up with his pointer finger.
“Mitari, he said, was shunned for being a loser, and I because I was feared. It's true. I was too challenging for the general run of idiots.” Amanuma said.
However, it seemed that Mitari was able to tune out the boy's comments. Mitari concentrated on the big screen television where the old 1980s video game graphics showed a digital Mitari and a digital ogre playing tennis.
“He was weak, I was strong...we were polar opposites.” Amanuma said, his eyes filled with a sadistics like enjoyment of telling Mitari how low he was compared to himself.
However, after a half an hour of Mitari and the ogre's match, Mitari was victorious.
“Three sets to one! Mitari wins!!” came from the big screen.
Mitari's mini him jumped up and down for victory while the other guy's guy was on his hands and knees, defeated.
“Guk....GRawww...” was the last noise coming from the creature before he vanished, along with the podium that had the controls on it.
Mitari turned around to walk back to the group; his own podium with the controls disappearing.
“Our first win!” Yusuke shouted, a huge grin on his face.
Once Mitari reached the group he turned towards his former colleague as well as schoolmate.
“You're right Amanuma...I'm weak, and I couldn't face it, so I put the blame on everyone else. That's why I gave into the dark side and joined Sensui. But it's not too late for me.” Mitari said, turning fully with a calm face.
He had made peace with himself, not fully however; he was able to stop blaming everything on him yet not blame all of humanity for all the bad things that happened with him. He thought of you and Kuwabara as he played the game. He thought he could feel you around him. Mitari felt as if you were standing there with him as he was playing and was trying to comfort him and was reading his thoughts. However, Mitari knew that he was just imagining it.
Amanuma leaned back in the chair and closed his eyes.
“Yeah, sure!” he said as a boy of his age would as if he was being scolded by a parent, “Next mini-game!”
The ogre next to the slot machine pulled the lever and the slots began to spin around. Soon the first stopped at SHOOTING, second at BATTLE CHOPPER, and the last on LEVEL 6.
A huge orger that looked mean appeared next to Amanuma.
“A vertical scrolling shooter. Level 6...I can tackle that.” Genkai said with no emotion in her face or voice.
“We each get three lives! The first to get three kills wins!” the ogre said with a gruff voice.
It had taken Genkai an hour, however she had defeated her opponent without losing any of her lives. Amanuma looked at Genkai with great respect, as one gamer should pay to another gamer. Not to mention, he was in awe at how awesome she had played.
“Boy, she knows her stuff!” Amanuma said with some excitement. “But now she's down. You'll regret expending her so early!”
The ogre pulled the lever again and the slots began there spinning. The first stopped on PUZZLES, second on BATTLE BLOCK, and the last on LEVEL 10.
“You're up Yanagisawa.” Kurama said turning to the lanky teen.
His eyes widened as he jumped and pointed at himself.
“Hang on! I've never even played a video game! And this is at level 10! I'm a dead duck!” Yanagisawa said.
“You forgetting your copy ability?” Kurama said.
“I'm a puzzle whiz.” Kaito said, pointing at himself.
“Oh...” Yanagisawa said blinking a bit before it hit him, “Oh yeah!”
Yanagisawa copied Kaito and in a matter of no time defeated the puzzle demon.
Yusuke grinned wide.
“Yanagisawa wins! That's three! One more win and we nail this thing!” Yusuke cheered.
“Sigh. Oh well...” Amanuma sighed standing up.
He pulled off the oversized hoodie and fully showed his true self. He was a cute little boy and if you were there, you would have wanted to hug him.
“I guess it's up to me.” Amanuma said with a grin.
It seemed to excite him that he was getting a chance to show his gaming skills.
“Mmmm...that's gamespeak.” Kaito said, a bit grim as he glanced at Kurama.
“Uh-huh....so now things get serious.” Kurama said.
“Yusuke listen...” Kurama said, not taking his eyes off of Amanuma who was stretching.
Yusuke glanced at Kurama with a raised eyebrow, obviously listening.
“I've gotta be honest...if Amanuma matches the real game's Gamer King, Kaito or I will probably manage a win. But I don't really think that's gonna be the case. This guy's probably way tougher than the game version! As such, neither you nor Hiei could beat him. Odds and experience are against you.” Kurama said, his hands clenched at his side.
“What that means is...” Yusuke said, seeming to get where Kurama was getting at, however, he wanted to hear it from the red head.
“If Kaito and I lose, we'll have no alternative but to beat a very hasty retreat.” Kurama said, his face grim and serious as he stared right at the young boy.
Yusuke blinked wide as he wasn't expecting that. However, his face turned serious as well.
'If Kurama's uncertain, that's a real worry. And it's creepy when an opponent gives no sense of the challenge he presents.' Yusuke thought, as he kept his eyes on the worried looking Kurama.
“Now then...” Amanuma said, pulling the lever himself and watching the slots spin, “Let's see what I get to play!”
The first landed on TRIVIA, second stopped on GENERAL, while the last stopped on LEVEL G.
“Trivia?! Ouch!” whined Amanuma, “Not my first choice, boy!”
“I'll play this.” Kaito said, glancing over at Kurama. “Trivia's a specialty of mine.”
“One more and we win!” Yusuke shouted, pointing his pointer finger in the air to show the 'one more'.
Kaito walked towards the big screen, his back to the group who looked at Kaito as he went. Kaito pushed his glasses up with his pointer finger.
“Trivia that guy into next Tuesday, Kaito!” Yusuke shouted, earning a weird look from everyone, except Kaito who was too buys focusing on winning.
'(YFN) might really be related to Yusuke...' Kurama thought with a small sweat drop, thinking that would be something you would have said.
Amanuma cracked his knuckles as he hummed a tune, seeming not too worried about his match against Kaito.
Kurama seemed to be the only one to notice the boy's carefree attitude.
“He seems quite confident. What can you tell us about his ability, Mitari?” Kurama asked, glancing over at his new teammate.
“Well,” Mitari began, turning towards Kurama, “I've never really seen it in action...but he can impose game environments on reality and that's exactly the kind of reality we're in right now. As for what happens next, who know?”
“Mulitple choice, buzz in to answer, 10 right asswers to win.” Amanuma explained as Kaito reached the podium that had the controls to the big screen, “No points off for being wrong, but get three wrong and you're out of contention.”
“Right.” Kaito said, having a played this part of the game before.
“Gamer King (Amanuma) vs. Kaito.” said a little figure on the big screen.
“BEGIN!”
Kaito glanced over with interest as Amanuma stood there with his arms crossed over his chest. It appeared like the boy wasn't going to play.
“What's he doing?! He's not at his buzzer!” Yusuke said, finding that a bit annoying for some reason.
“Well?” Kaito said, not sure why the boy was just standing a little bit away from the podium.
“I'll skip the first five questions.” Amanuma said, earning a raised eyebrow from Kaito, “You go ahead and answer, though. Call it a handicap.”
“A handicap? I doubt I'll need one.” Kaito said, resting his hand by his buzzer.
“All right! First question! In the Ama--” The little guy on the screen began, however Kaito hit his buzzer, stopping the question from being finished.
“What?!” Yusuke shouted, thinking Kaito was crazy to not even hear the question.
On the screen it read:
Question 1: In the Ama
a) Piroroca
b) Paroroca
c) Pororoca and
d)Peroroca
Kaito scrolled his pointer down and clicked on C.
“Correct!” came from the screen.
“He knew the answer less than three words into the question?!” Yusuke said, a little freaked out at how the guy could have known that answer.
“Simple process of elimination. There are 17,000 questions in BATTLE TRIVIA GENERAL, only three of which begin with 'In the Amazon.” The answers are Pororoca, Piranha, and the Trans-Amazon Highway.”
“H-He's memorized them?! All 17,000 questions and answers?!” Yanagisawa said with a more than shocked look on his face.
“What a geek!” he added more so in a whisper.
The screen began to show what the question was:
Question 1: In the Amazon, water in the Rio Gragurai at times rushes upstream. What is this natural phenomenon called?
Answer: Pororoca
“Would you like to rethink your handicap strategy?” Kaito said, glancing at Amanuma.
Amanuma looked at the screen as if he was deep in thought, his hand on his chin. Kaito couldn't help but study the boy's expression.
“Second question's coming up.” Amanuma said, not taking his focus from the big screen.
The next four questions ended up being the same thing. Kaito only getting barely the first three words to be said before he would pick the correct answer. Amanuma on the other hand, he just stood there as if studying the screen, looking for something to happen. It really looked like Kaito would be able to beat this kid and you and Kuwabara would soon be saved.
“Attaboy, Kaito! You're 5-0!” Yusuke cheered.
“I'd've been eliminated after the first three questions.” Yanagisawa said with a grin plastered on his face.
He may have thought Kaito was a geek, but he still thought he was pretty cool; especially at this very moment. However, right before the sixth question, Amanuma seemed to break away from his concentration with a smile on his lips.
“Ah ha! That's it!” he said before glancing at Kaito with a determined look.
He looked confident, which Kaito noted slightly before giving the young boy his full attention.
“Time for a comeback!” Amanuma said, swinging his 'buzzer' hand around as if to loosen it up.
“Glad you can join me.” Kaito said, glancing at the kid, “Were you seeing how I'd do first?”
Amanuma stuck his tongue out at Kaito.
“Naw, no surprises there. You're okay. I was trying to figure out something else.”
Kaito raised an eyebrow, not sure what this kid was talking about.
“You'll see.” Amanuma said, turning his attention back on the screen with a smile that showed he was confident.
The little guy on the screen appeared.
“Sixth question!” he said, however that was al he was able to get out before Amanuma hit the buzzer.
Kaito's eyes widened as he stared at the kid. The screen only showed:
Q6:
a
b
c
d
There was nothing to go by. No question, no answers, nothing.
'Is he nuts?!' Kaito thought, curious how Amanuma would be able to answer the question now, since thre wasn't one on the screen.
“If you buzz in before the questions starts...” Kurama began to explain, feeling a bit uneasy about what Amanuma might have up his sleeve, “Even the multiple choice answers aren't displayed.”
“Is he gonna take a blind guess?” Yusuke asked, looking a bit taken back that the kid would try a move so risky, especially if he didn't guess it right, Kaito would automatically win.
Amanuma smiled with a small laugh.
“Question 6 is What is the name of the asteroid that people feared might crash into the earth in the year 2000?' And the answer is B. Toutatis.” Amanuma said, scrolling his pointer to B and clicking it.
“Correct!” said the little guy on the screen.
“HUH?!” Yusuke said, looking a bit freaked out, however, under the circumstances, anyone would be.
“How on Earth...?” Yanagisawa said in shock and confusion.
The screen began to show what the question and choices were.
Q6. What is the name of the asteroid that people feared might crash into the earth in the year 2000?
a Halley
b Toutatis
C Magellan
D Nebula M78
“There it is! Just what he said!” Yanagisawa said with wide eyes. “Freaky! He quoted the whole thing, chapter and verse!”
“Precognition?! No, it's a trick...or he cheated!” Yusuke said, a freaked out look mixed with sort of being a pit peeved at how Amanuma would be such a cheater.
“Perhaps he memorized the order of all questions and their answers.” Kurama said, not sure either how he could have known the question and the answer.
“That can't be it. There's a randomizing algorithm...” Kaito said, trying to figure out how Amanuma was able to pull what he just did off.
“Ah, but every algorithm has a discernible pattern. This one takes five questions to figure out.” Amanuma said with a smug look with his finger in the air.
He gave Kaito a smile, a child like smile showing that he was having fun.
“I probably didn't allow enough of a handicap.” Amanuma added, sticking his tongue out at Kaito.
Kaito didn't stand a chance and in the end, Kaito had lost.
“That's the third wrong answer in a row for Kaito! Game over!” the big screen said.
Kaito stood with his hand over the buzzer. He couldn't believe he had lost.
“You got me. I couldn't see a pattern.” Kaito said his voice sounding defeated.
Amanuma glanced over at Kaito with a kind look.
“Hey, don't sweat it! You're a smart guy.” Amanuma said before turning fully to look at Kaito, grinning widely, “Better luck next time, eh?”
Kaito blinked. He wasn't sure what was up with this kid, but he didn't appear to be evil as he was expecting him to be.
“Crap! Kaito lost!” Yusuke said.
“That kid's incredible!” Yanagisawa said, impressed and still in awe over how Amanuma was able to beat the smart Kaito.
“Now its up to you Kurama!” Yusuke said, still in shock himself.
“Um...I just realized I never thought to ask...” Yusuke said, seeming to be realizing something that didn't seem quiet right about the situation they were all in, “What happens if we LOSE to Amanuma?”
“He hasn't told us, either. You okay, Kaito?” Yanagisawa said, looking at his friend with a bit of Concern.
“Sure I guess.” Kaito said, scratching the back of his head as he looked a bit bummed out.
Yusuke blinked in confusion at Kaito's answer to Yanagisawa's question.
“He seems to enjoy the sport of it.” Kaito explained, glancing back at Amanuma who was leaning against the slot machine in a causal manor, “Maybe he isn't interested in exacting penalties.”
“You don't feel odd in any way?” Kurama asked, making sure of something that came to his mind.
“No...no shocks, no soul sucking, nothing. I'm just annoyed I lost.” Kaito said, shrugging his shoulders.
“Well then, this could mean...” Kurama said, bringing his hand to his chin in thought.
“What? You've figured this thing out?” Yusuke asked, wanting to know exactly what their fate would be and what was Amanuma's plan for them would be.
“I'm afraid maybe I have. The danger isn't in losing but in giving up. If this follows the video game...” Kurama said.
Everyone thought over what Kurama said. Yusuke's eyes grew a bit annoyed as he growled.
“Aw cripes! Not THAT again!”
“ 'Fraid so. Losing in the video game brings up the words GAME OVER. Then you can choose to either continue or give up. If you continue, you skip the opening sequence and start the game over. But if you give up, the screen displays the graves of the players.” Kurama said with a serious look.
Yusuke stood there blinking for a moment. However, slowly it appeared to dawn on him.
“You mean...” Yusuke said, his eyes widening, “We're stuck here, playing against this kid until we beat him?! No frickin' way! We don't have the time! We've been here two hours already!” whined Yusuke, mixed with aggravation.
He didn't like the fact you and Kuwabara were with that freak of nature for as long as the two of you were , and by how they were doing against Amanuma, it seemed that they wouldn't beat his game until it was too late; at the rate they were going that is.
“Amanuma's not here to fight us to the death. He's buying time until the barrier tunnel is open.” Kurama said, with a grim look and confirming Yusuke's fears.
“And when it is, I'll release my territory.” Amanuma said, looking at the group with an excited smile. “So relax and enjoy. Believe me, the time will pass quickly!”
At the Same Time With You and Kuwabara....
You were still sleeping in Kuwabara's lap. He didn't know what to do. He couldn't bring forth his sword since your head was on top of his hands. Gourmet was sitting next to him and giving you looks that made Kuwabara want to kill the man.
'I gotta get (YFN) outta here. Damn it Urameshi, where the heck are ya?!' Kuwabara thought with a low growl.
Itsuki opened his eyes with a smile. He still sat in that small rowboat in the middle of the underwater lake. The hole behind him was bigger then it was a few hours ago. There were a lot more demons at the opening then when it was first beginning to grow.
“Things are going well.” Itsuki said, looking at Sensui who was sitting on the couch watching the Black Chapter tape. “My powers are intensifying. Two more hours should do it. Look behind me, Shinobu. The denizens of the demon plane have discovered the light.”
Sensui didn't take his eyes away from the screen, watching as a group of soldiers set a house on fire, with a woman and her child still inside the building.
“Time enough to take in this movie...and for you to think over things very carefully, Kuwabara.” Sensui said, not looking back at Kuwabara.
“I WON'T help you, now or ever.” growled Kuwabara, glaring daggers at the back of Sensui's head.
He hadn't been able to avoid seeing parts of that tape and it made him pissed that people, human beings for that matter, could do such horrible things. However, what kept him 'sane' was in his lap. Your sleeping and innocent filled faced in his lap made him remember that there were more people out there like you, and not that many people like those featured on that tapee. You snuggled closer in his lap, which made him blush slightly.
“He's never gonna cooperate. If you ask me, I should just eat him. Or at least get a taste of that girl.” Gourmet said, licking his lips as he stared down at you.
“You lay a finger no her and I'll bite it off, ya hear me!!” Kuwabara growled, showing his teeth at the man.
“No need to be hasty. What's two more hours anyway?” Sensui said with a smile on his lips.
“I agree.” Itsuki said, with a small smile on his own lips.
“Besides, you could always eat the girl later, as an after dinner snack.” Sensui added with an amusded smile on his lips.
“You leave (YFAN)-chan outta this ya sicko!” Kuwabara growled, baring his teeth even more as Gourmet snickered at him and moved one of his appendages towards you, as if to poke you.
Just a Gourmet was about to poke you in the ribs, Kuwabara chopped down good and hard on his finger. Gourmet cried out in pain and held his finger. Kuwabara spat out the small amount of blood that was in his mouth; from the man's finger being bitten.
“Try that again and you'll loose that finger, buddy.” Kuwabara said, his eyes daring the guy to try it again.
Gourmet growled and looked ready to hit Kuwabara.
“Gourmet.” Sensui said with a warning in his voice.
Gourmet glared at Kuwabara with his hand in mid air and ready to strike. He snorted before lowering his hand and standing up. He walked away and headed back to where he had been sitting down when they first all came into the cave.
Kuwabara continued to glare at the guy before finding that you were safe, if just for the moment. He let out a sigh before turning his eyes down at your peaceful sleeping face. You shifted again, snuggling your face into his stomach, while your hands rested against his side, being that they were tied up and you couldn't wrap them around Kuwabara's waist. Kuwabara looked down at you with eyes that showed all of his emotions for you. If you were to awake and look up into Kuwabara's eyes that very moment, you would have seen how much he loved you. However, you were in a deep sleep and unaware of anything and everything that was going on around you.
'I won't let anything happen to you (YFN).' Kuwabara thought.
Sensui continued to watch the tape, a smirk on his lips.
