Chapter 3: Oh Cruel…
Freedom!
Exams were finally over and Keiko was now worry free until the results were announced.
Her brain was still a swirling mass of English phrases, math formulas and Japanese literature, so being that it was a nice day she decided on taking the scenic route home.
At a slow pace she watched as the afternoon sun began to set, casting everything in a vermillion haze. Walking along the dirt path over the grassy riverbank she looked down into the orange tinted, shimmering water. Stopping to enjoy the view she was pulled from her meditation by a sound.
Scanning the banks her gaze fell on a lone figure down by the river. The sound came again and she knew it couldn’t have come from the mystery man. It was small and raspy, like a kitten or something.
It wasn’t until the man shifted some to the right that she was able to see the source. In the man’s grasp was a little boy, maybe no older than 6 or 7 years, struggling against the hand around his neck. While the man’s left hand held his other arm…. pulling? No, trying to rip it off!
Keiko stood frozen in shock until another strangled cry came for the boy. Jolted into action she looked for a weapon, her bag totally useless (it was too light), or some help, and that was completely futile. The area was empty around this time of day, hell it was a miracle she had decided to pass this way.
Knowing she didn’t have any more time to waste she started to descend down the slope. As she came to the bottom she saw a thick piece of driftwood lying on the bank. Running over to it she tossed her bag aside and picked it up before getting closer to the man.
“Let him go!” she yelled stopping a few feet from him, ready to attack or defend, but when the man turned she couldn’t help but swallow thickly.
He. Was. Huge.
But it wasn’t until their eyes met that she knew.
He wasn’t human.
Kami, where was a spirit detective when you needed one? She thought bitterly.
The little boy managed to twist his head a bit to see who had gained the giant’s attention. He gave another strangle squeak as he saw the teenage girl ready to attack. He wanted to warn her but he wanted to be saved even more.
Hearing the boy’s whimper she looked away from the demon and stared into the boy’s big, pleading and scared eyes.
“D-don’t worry. I’ll save you.” She declared, wincing inwardly at the tremble in her voice.
Way to go, Keiko. That was just chalk- full of confidence. She berated herself.
The demon gave an incredulous laugh, before sneering at her.
“And what do ya think you’re gonna do, huh?” he asked giving into another loud laugh.
A cold sweat broke out all over her as she too wondered that.
“Oh, I can do plenty.” She taunted, glad her voice didn’t betray her this time. “Or are you more interested in little boys?”
The demon raised a thick brow at her; she just hoped the thing was dense enough to fall for her taunts.
Please. She silently prayed
“Come on! Why have a snack when I’m offering a full course!” The plank trembled in her hands while she waited for the monster to do something.
The demon suddenly grinned, “ You’re right. I’ll just throw this small fry back.” It said before tossing the boy into the river.
Damn, not as dense as I hoped. She growled to herself.
She started to move toward the river to help the boy only to have the demon step into her path. Stopping she frantically scanned the water and kept watch on the demon.
She gave a sigh of relief when the boys’ head broke the surface but it was short lived as she watched the boy struggle to stay afloat with only one good arm. The demon’s handling must’ve either dislocated or torn something in the boy’s arm making it useless.
She couldn’t do much but watch as the current carried the boy further and further away from the area. Just then from the corner of her eye she saw movement and barely managed to dodge as the demon attacked.
After a few more close calls she knew the thing was toying with her.
Now don’t get her wrong, she’d be the first to admit she was pretty athletic but after seeing the others fighting at the Dark Tournament she knew that even the lowest level of demons was physically superior to a normal human.
The next time the demon came at her she swung the plank with everything she had, hoping that all the times Yusuke had claimed she had a strong arm would be to her advantage. At least she hoped to stun the beast enough to reach the water and go after the child.
The plank made contact with the demon’s head and forearm, and in that millisecond she felt relieved but then the wood shattered. Splinters flew and the next thing she knew pain exploded in her head and she went flying back.
Air whooshed from her lungs as she made a hard connection with the ground.
“You hit pretty hard for a human.” The demon commented examining the small red spot on it arm from her attack. Though Keiko wasn’t even listening as she struggled to breath. Thought flew through her mind as she wondered if her face was shattered. Geez, it hurt so much. And what about the boy? Man I’m such a failure.
Poor little boy, she hoped someone found him in time.
But what about me? Came the last thought, tears came to her eyes as she stared at the demon slowly coming closer. Tears came to her eyes, but she mentally shook herself, she refused to give in to the self-pity and helplessness. She struggled to sit up, to move away but she was knocked back. A large hand clamped around her neck keeping her down.
She clawed at the hand trying to remove it; she twisted and bucked trying to escape only to have the demon straddle her waist, mindful of her knees.
“Get…off…me.” she rasped glaring up at him, still struggling. He grinned down at her before raising his other arm. She paused in her fight as she noticed he held a rather large piece of the splintered wood in his hand. When had he picked that up? She thought just before it blurred and pain blossomed in her chest.
The pain was indescribable. Blood filled her mouth, nose and lungs, slowly drowning her. And despite the introduction of the stake her heart still struggled to beat around it. Her vision began to blur and she was sure she would black out but she fought it, she was going to fight even if just a little more.
Somehow she managed to clear her mouth and nose by coughing, though that was agony in itself. Lifting a weak hand she gripped a handful of the demon’s shirt, her glared into his eyes conveying all the negative feelings she had for him. He merely chuckled at it.
“I like that your so feisty, it’ll add a much better flavor.” He murmured as he grinned widely showing rows of sharp pointy teeth.
His head descended and her only thoughts as she watched the maw open was ‘Yusuke.’
