Chapter 4

Revenge Without Revenge

Yusuke sat in Genkai’s living room smoking on the couch watching as Yukina tried to comfort Boton. After Keiko died, Boton had never quite been the same. The only one she counted on was the only one she thought would never leave her, Remu. Now her only “girlfriends” left alive were Shizuru and Yukina, and Shizuru was almost always gone, and Yukina was busy with Kuwabara. That left Koenma, and kami knew he wasn’t the same. One can see why Boton may be a little upset.

Yusuke, accordingly, was stressed out. This teenager, this bastard, had been so manipulative that he had found a way to kill a shinigami. Now Yusuke had to find away to keep Sniper safe, and make this smarmy, egotistical, jackass pay! But how was he supposed to do that? He didn’t know what to do. He knew how to help Sniper, but how to stop Raito? If he could, he would use the Death Note, but he couldn’t do that. Only humans and Shinigami could use the Death Note. Apparently, some asshole in spirit world thought that if the Death Note ever fell into the hands of demons it would spell disaster. Stupid spirit world fuckers.

He sighed heavily once more and smoked his cigarette. Kurama walked up behind him and said “What are you going to do?” Yusuke shifted for a moment and said “I will take care of Sniper first. Then I will take care of ‘Kira’. Kurama, can you go down to Demon’s Door Cave and go collect Sniper? Bring him here and let him sleep and eat. Especially sleep. While he may be sane now, he might not be if he’s sleep deprived.” Yusuke slowly stood up and kissed Kurama before walking out the door. Before he left, he couldn’t help but look back at Boton, sobbing uncontrollably at the loss of a centuries-old friend. As if he needed more fuel to want to kick Raito’s ass.

*At Raito’s House*

Raito was about to beat his head against the wall. How could he have let this happen? How could he have been so careless? How was he supposed to get out of this situation? And beyond that, how could he let a murder off, scott-free? That was the very thing he could not do. But he didn’t have any leverage on Yusuke, after-all, he was a demon and could not be killed with the Death Note. That’s when one of the most diabolical and manipulative ideas went through his head. He knew that Yusuke’s lover was a fox-demon and therefore untouchable. However, all of Kurama and Yusuke’s family were human. He busily began researching their names and faces. By that time the next day, every human that was close to Yusuke and Kurama would die unless they followed his orders.

*Back at Genkai’s*

By the time Yusuke got back home, it was late into the night. He had barged into the house, not bothering to talk to anyone else, but walked strait to the bathroom. He fists were bloody and buised, his face was scratched up, and his eyes were smoldering dangerously with anger. Everyone knew better than to bother him when he was like this, and so let him wash himself without interruption.

Hagiri, the only one there not to see him like this, shook slightly with fear. For the first time ever Hagiri was able to get a glimpse of just how strong he was, and it truly frightened him.

By the time Yusuke walked back in the living room, all his scraped and bruises had healed. He was in a mellow mood and a new change of clothes. He sat on the couch with a beer in his hand and announced, “sorry guys, but I had to sort something out.” Yusuke said, chugging his beer. “I want to the makai and spared with Yomi and Mokuro a bit.”

Kurama looked up at Yusuke and said “Now that you can think rationally, what is your plan?” Yusuke sighed at this and said “For this plan, I need both you and Sniper to be close to where I am.”

“Are you sure that is wise?”

“No, but the closer you two are, the better I can protect you. Another thins is I need to keep Sniper close in case I need to use him as a bargaining chip, but I will still protect him.”

“You know, I am right here, you know.” Hagiri said irritably. “And I have a name it’s-“

“NO! Please, please don’t tell me your name. That information is the only thing Kira needs to kill you. If he threatens me, or things go terribly wrong, I might tell him, and I don’t want that to happen. And I know you don’t like us talking about this right in front of you deserve to hear all of this. You understand?”

“Yes.” Hagiri said simply.

“As far an I’m aware, the minute I convince the police that you’re dead, you can do whatever you want to do. I’m still not sure what to do about the rest of it through. We’ll have to be extremely careful about taking care of Kira.” He took another swig of beer before saying “Never before have I ever wanted to kill a human as much as I want to kill that man.”

They all took turns keeping watch over Hagiri later on that night. Yusuke finally was able to have a long discussion with Hagiri, and for the first time, he managed to get past the whole “That-bastard-tried-to-kill-me” thing. They had a few drinks, and talked about their lives and found that they weren’t really all that different from one another. Both had grown up in similar environments, smoked the same cigarettes, and hat the same outlook on life. If not for the fact Yusuke had died a couple of times and their sexual orientation, they could have been clones. Yusuke didn’t think they ever would have started talking, if Hagiri hadn’t broken the ice. He looked over at Yusuke, who’s eyes were glued on the TV and said “Hey, Urameshi-“

“Call me Yusuke, and you should be asleep.”

“I just wanted to say… I’m sorry for what happened to Keiko.”

Yusuke looked away from the TV and stared at Hagiri before saying “How did you know?”

Hagiri shrugged before saying “In my line of work, you hear things.”

“And what kind of work do you do?”

“I’m a demon-slayer for hire. Basically, I do under the counter work as I travel."

“I had no idea.”
“Yeah, well, it’s kind of the only thing that I’m good at.”

“I can understand that, after all, I’m still doing the same job as I was 10 years ago.”

“You’re still spirit-detective?”

“Not quite, Spirit-World isn’t very fond of demons, however I do help them every-once-and-a-while, and I act more as a bounty-hunter now. But that’s only when I’m in the Ningenkai, though.”

“I heard about you becoming Demon-World King, what was that like?”

“Ah, it was really boring, but it was kind of cool knowing that I was the strongest at the time.”

“They chatted like that for a while, until Hagiri finally fell asleep. Yusuke followed shortly after, then Kurama took his turn watching over the sleeping slayer.

Yusuke woke up to the smell of bacon. He groggily got up and stumbled to the kitchen. He managed to find his way to the table and plopped down, his head flat against the table.

Kurama snickered slightly before saying “All fear the powerful Mazoku lord!”

Yusuke grunted unintelligibly before raising his hand and demanding a cup of coffee. As Yusuke slowly came back to the land of the living, Kurama finished making the small feast that was before them. Eggs, bacon, toast, and pancakes were all lined up on the table.

Yusuke grinned evilly before yelling out “HEY EVERYBODY! BREAKFAST!”

They effect was almost immediate; within five minutes Yusuke was surrounded by some of the strongest people on Earth, all of them pissed, and all of them murderous. After they were finished beating the crap out of Yusuke, they sat around the table for breakfast.

It was a friendly affair with introductions made, and talk of the past. Shizuru and Kuwabara had arrived in the middle of the night, so the Kuwa-bash started almost immediately. Hagiri couldn’t help but feel completely lost, and yet completely at home among the shouts, insults, endearments and food that was flung around the table.

Everyone was extremely careful around Boton, who was still depressed, but was trying her absolute best not to show it. Still, everyone knew it was there, and so were careful what they said to her.

Some time around 10:30, everyone was done with breakfast, and they all had to go their separate ways. Kurama, Hagiri and Yusuke all left shortly after they were bathed in good-wished from their in friends/family.

Around 11o’clock, Yusuke walked into the police station. Raito and Chief Yagami were already waiting for him. Yusuke and Raito combined managed to convince the chief that Kira was the murderer. Over all, it was rather uneventful, as Boton didn’t need to make her appearance.

Everything seemed to go as planned until Raito managed to corner Yusuke before leaving.
“What do you want?” Yusuke snapped at Raito.

“I just wanted to show you something.” Raito said, an evil smirk plastered on his face. He pulled out a piece of plain, ordinary, paper. On it was a list of people, Genkai, Shizuru, Kuwabara, Atsuko, Shiori, and more close friends and relatives. Next to all of their names was a picture.

“I’m sure you understand what I am threatening, here. Either you hand over Sniper, or all of these people will die. You have 3 hours to call me back, or I start the killing spree.”

Yusuke called Kurama the moment he walked out of the building. “Kurama, meet me at the park downtown in five minutes, bring him with you.”

Kurama, Hagiri, and Yusuke all met up in the park. Even Hagiri could tell that Yusuke was upset about something. Yusuke told both of them about the list. Anyone who knew Kurama at all could feel the waves of anger and hatred pouring from him. They were well and truly stuck, and they knew it. If Kurama or Yusuke killed him, they would have to endure extreme punishment from killing a human. They could get a human to use the Death Note, but then they would neither go to heaven nor hell after they died.

Hagiri of course offered to go with Raito, but Kurama and Yusuke both said no flat out to that. They decided that they would meet up with Raito and attempt to negotiate while Hagiri stayed far away. It was the only thing that Kurama and Yusuke could think of, all though, both of them knew that if it came down to it, they would kill Raito and endure the punishment.

Raito showed up a couple of minutes after Yusuke called him. Yusuke could feel the rage building up within himself and Kurama. Sniper was around two hundred feet away, listening into the entire conversation with his territory open.

“Well Urameshi, where is Sniper?”

“He’s not here right now, so please leave a message at the BEEP YOU!!” Yusuke knew that this wasn’t the right way to go, but he couldn’t help it, he became a smart-ass.

“Where is he?” Raito asked again, this time pissed off.

“We came here to negotiate.” Kurama stated coolly.

“Oh really, and what could you possibly use as leverage against me? I have the power to kill all of your friends! All of you family! Maybe I should start with your mothers. How should I kill them, do you think?”
Kurama began to reach behind his hair for his deadly rose, as Yusuke began to gather his energy. They knew that this was it, he had to go, no matter the consequences this fucker had to die. As Raito slowly reached for the paper in his wallet, something unexpected happened. Yusuke and Kurama both felt it as Hagiri gathered his energy into his die and shot it directly into Raito’s stomach.

Raito crumpled backwards and fell to the ground, grasping and moaning in the fierce agony that consumed his entire body. He looked up from pain-hazed eyes as a young man walked up to him.

“My name is Kaname Hagiri. I am Sniper.” With that, Hagiri raised his hand, and shot another die directly into Raito’s chest.

*Two Years Later*

Hagiri drove like a maniac up the road towards Genkai’s house. He had a new bike, and he was adamant about testing this sucker out. As he sped up the familiar roads his heart began to swell with anticipation.

He rode up the humungous stair case on the roaring mechanical beast below him. He drove past the gates, and hit the screeching brakes, making dirt kick up around him.

“Show off.” Yusuke said good naturedly as Hagiri got off the bike.

Hagiri smiled and said “Shut up, you just wish you could be this cool.”

Yusuke grumbled lightly as Kurama walked up behind him.

“Don’t mind him; he’s just pissed off because Genkai just beat his ass in Halo 3 again.”

“Hey! I thought we weren’t going to mention that! It isn’t my fault that the old hag is a video game prodigy!”

Hagiri walked into the familiar house while laughing at the bickering couple. He walked into the living room and saw Kuwabara, Hiei, Boton, Genkai and wife, Shizuru.

Needless to say, a lot had changed in the last couple of years. He had filled Yusuke’s position as spirit-detective. He still had the mazoku’s help on many cases, but he now had the official title. When he met Shizuru, everything changed.

She was his world. She was strong, hard-headed, and not afraid to speak her mind. In almost every way they were different, and yet that was the very thing that drew them together.

Hagiri was now social, were he had once been quiet. He could now be seen frequently hanging out with the gang, and considered them all family. Yusuke was his brother in every way but biologically, and if anyone asked, he would say so.

But even through all of this, he still could never over-come what he had done. Sensui and Raito still haunted his past. Every year, Yusuke and Hagiri went to Raito’s grave, and later on in the year, they would visit Sensui’s cave. It had helped, but nothing would ever fully make his feeling disappear, and he couldn’t help but wonder if Yusuke felt the same.

He leaned over the couch and kissed Shizuru.

“Eww… Take that nasty stuff out of here!” Kuwabara complained loudly.

Shizuru flipped him off and said, “If you don’t like it, don’t watch.”

Hiei scoffed lightly in response, making Kuwabara say, “What was that, Shorty?!”

“I didn’t say anything, idiot.”

“Yes, but you wanted to!”

“How would you know?”

“You know what, I’m going to kill you!” As stood up, only to have Genkai trip him. He fell down gracelessly with a loud “bang”.

“You know the rules. No killing in the house, too much blood.”

They continued the bickering for a couple of minutes, especially after Yusuke came into the mix. Eventually they were all interrupted when Boton and Yukina said that dinner was done. The mass migration to the dinner table began.

As the conversation at the dinner table erupted, Hagiri couldn’t help but once again feel at home. He couldn’t have dreamed of a better life. He had a family of friends, and amazing wife, and a kick-ass job. What more does a man need?
