Chapter 4
---------------
It was a bustle inside when I finally decided to come down. It is already past noon and the sun’s rays have lightened; a little snack is appropriate during this time of the day. And that’s the only reason I have my feet on the wooden floors of this temple. Everyone needs food.
“Hiei-kun, would you like some rice cakes?”
I gave her a curt nod and she bustled into the kitchen to prepare everyone’s snacks. My sister’s innocence is a façade; she knows it and she keeps it well. It is the only thing to keep her from falling apart. The others are lounging while Kuwabara’s sister, Shizuru, played with her child. The boy seemed content enough with what he has. Unlike me.
You looked as if you were watching the mother-son scene in front of you. Until now we barely talk. It’s all repressed and we keep on hiding behind each others’ backs, unrelenting, wishing that it would break apart, to disintegrate so as for us to forget.
How can a broken thing break? You cannot lose something you never had.
I receive my portion from my gentle Koorime, whispering a thank you and leaning on the bamboo walls. I sip my drink. You gladly accept my sister’s offers. At least you’re nice to her, even if you keep on lying outright to her. I look away trying to pry my mind of everything that’s going on. My mind is overloaded. I need a break.
“Sachi, be careful now. Hey oneechan, watch out for those things. He might cut himself and get infected.”
“Kazuma, I know how to take care of my child. Let him have fun- Sachi! I told you to stay away from that pond…”
Yuusuke only half-smiled, his eyes clearly regretting the day Keiko left him for another man. I envy him. At least he has a chance; me? I have nothing but you and our game. I watch the little boy, Sachi, running after the bewildered birds. Yukina smiles even if she told us to be careful with the birds; it is my only true pleasure nowadays. I’m suddenly hurting all over, choking on the food, and splattering the tea on the floor. Shit. It’s the damn pills.
Yuusuke straightens up to support me. Everything is blurred. I don’t know why but I’m burning. Maybe it’s the pills. It is the pills.
“Oi, Hiei, look at me…”, Yuusuke stop shouting in my ear. I see you. You’re looking at me. “Yuusuke, I’ll take care of this.” I feel the detective’s support slipping away; I can hear Yukina rummaging the cabinets, Kuwabara helping her find something. I feel weak. Shizuru takes little Sachi out so as not to see anything. I feel the wetness at my side. I touch the ribs and smell copper. I’m bleeding. The pills were supposed to keep this from happening. But damn.
“Yukina, get me some bandages. Yuusuke, get some water; Kuwabara help me with Hiei.”
Kami. Your voice is still calm after all this, huh? You feel nothing. So that’s what I am to do now. Feel nothing.
Darkness.

A/N: ooh. Pills? HAH! For you to find out.
