Chapter 38: Prelude to Trouble

The next day you and Kuwabara found yourselves almost late to class; however, after staying up the night before listening to some of the CDs that Kuwabara had on his favorite American band; well, how could one not be tired?

The first part of the day seemed to go real fast, and by lunchtime you and Kuwabara were more than ready to have some fun at the concert. However, you both wanted to hear what happened in more detailed with Yusuke and what had happened at the hospital.

“Kamiya knew he was doomed…” Yusuke said, finishing his story, “once the demon plane portal was finished.”

You, Yusuke, and Kuwabara were sitting on top of the school’s rooftop eating your lunch. It had an excellent view of the city, which was big. The air was cool and there was a soft breeze that felt relaxing against your skin as you sat Indian style as you dug into your lunch.

“It’s crazy man…” Kuwabara said as he took another bite out of his Italian sandwich, which you had made for him that morning. “They don’t care that they’re cutting their own throats?”

You took a bite out of your own turkey and cheese sandwich and gulped down some of the beverage you had brought with you. You sat there with a thoughtful look on your face. You were deep in thought and trying to absorb the information into your skull. If you had only watched the rest of this season, you would have been able to relax; but NO your job made you miss these episodes. So now, you had to hang on very single word looking for any clues that would help you with whatever would happen next.

However, in didn’t mean you didn’t hear of some of the things that happened in the series. There were rumors roaming around some websites and in some fan fics that hinted about what happened in this season and even the next; however, sometimes the things you read on fan fiction sites aren’t actually what happens in the shows. It’s better to just watch the episodes and see for your self what happened. However, you couldn’t and just had to go through the rest of the episodes with your guard up and watch for signs of some of those ‘possible’ rumors and events that were said to have happened.

You continued to listen to the conversation.

“That’s about it.” Yusuke said, taking a bite out of the sandwich his mother prepared for him.

“What a buncha psychos!” Kuwabara said with a disturbed look.

“They’re not the first humans with such impulses.” Yusuke said, sort of in their defense.

“But its so abstract. I can barely deal with reality.” Kuwabara said.

“As for that, we have two weeks to find the portal’s center and close it.” Yusuke said sighing.

However, before the conversation could continue, the door to the rooftop slammed open.

“Yusuke!! Big-time problem!” Botan shouted as she came out of the door.

She was dressed in the girl’s uniform for your school as she was flawing around the spirit world suitcase.

“Huh? What now, Botan?” Yusuke asked, blinking at the girl.

Botan stood in front of you all and pointed her finger.

“We thought we had two weeks to close the portal but in fact we only have one!”

“What?!” Yusuke shouted.

“How’d we lose a week?!” Kuwabara shouted.

“That can’t be right!” You shout as now all three of you are on your feet; lunches being forgotten if for the moment.

Botan sat the brief case down and opened it up. There was the screen from before.

“I’ll let Lord Koenma explain.” She said as she hit the on button.

The three of you sit back down, closer to the screen and all in suspense.

“I’m afraid it’s true, Yusuke. We have only one week to close that portal.” Said a baby face Koenma.

“But why?! What’s happened?!” Yusuke shouted at the toddler on the screen.

“We…uh…reexamined the data, and found that the 1.3 km diameter hole we measured had its center 550 m underground.” Koenma said, his screen pulling back to show what appeared to be a chalkboard.

On the chalkboard was a circle that was cut in half and then that half cut in half. If one was into math, they could see the equations and mathematical precision that was shown on this chalkboard. If you were one of these? Only your math grades could say. However, all in all, it appeared someone in the spirit world needed to get schooled in his or her math.

“The spherical distortion field actually originates from deep underground. The part of the sphere we initially measured was an off-center cross section projected on the surface!”

“So what’s the story? I can’t see what’s on that screen ya’know.” Kuwabara said turning to look at Yusuke and then at you.

“It’s got to do with geometry I think…” Yusuke said looking at Kuwabara with a frustrated look on his face.

“Yeah, it is.” You said with a sweat drop.

It was funny that the only math you were good at was Geometry. Who knew it would actually be useful; and in an anime no less!

“But the upshot is, we have a week left and hafta go a lot further underground than we figured.” Yusuke added.

Koenma seemed to ignore you all who were talking threw his report; continuing what he had to say.

“But now we know the location—Irima cave. It’s a large cavern with a groundwater reservoir and an entrance in the suburbs.”

“Always the suburbs; aren’t they suppose to be safe and boring…” you mumbled, although that earned you a small grin from Yusuke.

However, he soon turned serious and determined.

“That’s all we need to know, then! Let’s notify Kurama and head over there!!”

Botan closed up the case and she looked ready to leave along with Yusuke. You looked at Kuwabara with a look as if you didn’t know what to do. Sure, you wanted to check out that cave and see what was going on exactly, however; you wanted to have some fun. It had been a long time since you had just enjoyed spending time with Kuwabara. You hadn’t even gone to the arcade since you had come back from the Dark Tournament, and that had been a month ago already!

Yusuke seemed to notice the hesitation between you and Kuwabara.

“Hey, Kuwabara, (YAFN)! You hear me?!” Yusuke shouted looking a bit annoyed and anxious.

He wanted to get this entire thing over and done with so he could just sit back and relax. He too had enough of all the crap that had been going on in not even an entire year!

“Um…” Kuwabara started.

“Well…” you said along with Kuwabara.

You both looked at each other before turning back to a now confused Botan and at Yusuke who had a raised eyebrow at the two of you.

“We’re gonna hafta sit this one out.” Kuwabara said nodding in your direction.

Yusuke and Botan just blinked at the two of you and had a face like ‘what the hell?’.

“Why? You guys sick or something?” he asked.

Kuwabara gave a nervous laugh while you wore a cheeky sideways grin while scratching the back of your head.

“Well, y’see…heh…” Kuwabara began not too sure how to put into words Yusuke wouldn’t end up beating him into a pulp.

“Don’t tell me yer scared?” Yusuke said giving you guys a teasing look.

However, Botan gave him a fist slap to the back of his head.

“Dolt!” she said with a growl.

You chuckled at that before turning to Kuwabara, waiting for him to explain. It was his tickets and he was the one who asked you to go; and he was the one who had planed this whole thing. So you were just the guest to go along for the ride. None of it would be your fault; so if anyone were to take the blunt of Yusuke’s incoming yelling it should be Kuwabara.

“Sorry!” Kuwabara started while taking out his ticket and scratching the back of his head with a wide grin.

You in turn found you should add your two cents.

“Yeah, sorry,” you said taking out your own ticket.

“But Megallica’s first live concert in Japan is tonight! And (YAFN)-chan and I already planned on going.”

Yusuke’s face was priceless, as it looked caught between being pissed and being electrocuted by the news he had just heard. Botan’s face wasn’t so funny as she just looked pissed off and possibly a little offended.

“WHAT?!

“Kuwabara! (YAFN)-chan! C’mon let’s get going!” came a voice from behind Yusuke and Botan.

There was Kirishima, Sawamura, and Okubo coming up holding their own tickets in their hands. There weren’t many classes after lunch. You all only had P.E. and a study time before the last bell to end the day; so it was fine if you guys skipped those last classes at least once in a blue moon. Besides, P.E. wasn’t going to be anything fun, just physical fitness stuff. You cringed just the thought of trying to do chin ups, the hard way too.

Before you could say another word or even take in a breath, you found yourself on your butt looking up at a cloud of smoke that appeared where Kuwabara had just been standing.

“You’re ducking out for a concert?! And taking (YAFN) with you?!” said Yusuke’s pissed off voice from the dust cloud.

“Its Megallica! A guy’s gotta have priorities! Besides, (YAFN)-chan needs a break every once in a while! She can’t just keep going on these dangerous missions with out having some fun!” shouted Kuwabara from the cloud.

You sat on the ground, sweat dropping and slightly blushing at how Kuwabara had thought of your well being along with how much he wanted to go to this concert.

Kuwabara’s three friends stood back from the cloud, not knowing if they should help their leader or just take a few steps away. However, Kirishima or rather Kiri-chan as you called him; pulled you a way from the cloud before you too could be swallowed up.

You had given each of the three young men nicknames. Sawamura was Mura-kun and Okubo was Oku-kun. You were close to all three, however you and Kirishima seemed to hit it off and right away, not to mention were closer to each other then the other two. You had found out that Kirishima had been close friends with Kuwabara since kindergarten. Kuwabara had protected him from bullies and had taught him how to defend himself.

Kiri-chan really had a lot of respect for Kuwabara and would give his life to save him if he could. Not only that, but he was a gentleman and it didn’t hurt that he was the cutest one out of the group of Kuwabara’s trio. However, you didn’t fall for the blond hair, blue-eyed young man’s charms; even though he was very charming.

You gave him an appreciated grin.

“Thanks.”

“No prob (YAFN)-chan.” He said with a smile before turning a winching face back to find the cloud had finally cleared.

Kuwabara didn’t seem to be beaten up too badly, meaning Yusuke had most likely taken it easy on his best friend. Kuwabara however had his finger in Yusuke’s face.

“What if it was you with tickets to the Mixed Martial Arts Championships?!” Kuwabara growled.

Yusuke looked back at his best friend with a look that seemed to make Yusuke back off as an ‘urk!’ escaped his lips. Yusuke walked away as if he was actually thinking over those words of Kuwabara and found it hard to choose between going on a mission that would most likely not be fun or go to something that he had always wanted to go to since he could even remember.

“Ai yi yi yi yi yi yi!” Yusuke screamed as he pulled at his hair.

“Hey! We’ve got a job to do!” Botan shouted, as she looked astonished at Yusuke; shocked that he would even have a hard time deciding on something like that.

She then turned back to Kuwabara with a disappointed yet angry glare.

“Too bad! I’ve been looking forward to this for a whole year! If I miss it, my life won’t be worth living! You can tell me the world’s gonna spin out of control and hurtle into the sun! I’m still going to this concert and I’m gonna be takin’ (YFN)-chan with me!” Kuwabara growled before walking up to you and grabbing your hand.

You blinked down at his hand and then back up at his determined face that glared at Yusuke. This move kind of shocked you as you weren’t expecting Kuwabara to do such a thing. His hand covered your own hand and felt kind of nice. It was a warm feeling and made you feel safe, even if he was just holding your hand.

Yusuke appeared to be urked by this comment and began to pick his ear with his pinky.

“Fine! But when things get messed up, don’t come crying to me! And you better make sure (YAFN) comes back in one piece!”

“Hah! Like I’d let anything bad happen to her! And I won’t ever come cryin to you cause I can handle myself and (YAFN)-chan!” Kuwabara said, holding a firmer grip on your hand as he got back into Yusuke’s face.

“You get a boo-boo, don’t expect me to kiss it and make it better!” Yusuke said making a kissy face while Kuwabara had Yusuke by the front of his shirt.

Kuwabara growled while you sweat dropped as you now found yourself in a dangerous situation. You were still attached to Kuwabara via your hand. If the two young hormonal teenagers were to get into another one of their brawls, you’d need someone to kiss YOUR boo-boos, or even have someone use spiritual healing to fix them. You would prefer the kissing to anything else; or just needing neither.

“Hey, you’re talkin’ to a guy with guts of steel!” Kuwabara said, letting go of Yusuke’s shirt and pointing at himself.

Yusuke turns around and shrugs as he makes a face as if to say ‘yeah right.’

“I don’t need your help to handle any crud that comes my way!” Kuwabara continued as he shouted at Yusuke’s back.

Yusuke turned back around and the two boys growled and glared at each other.

Meanwhile, Kuwabara’s friends stared at the two not understanding what was going on and why it mattered that Kuwabara went to the concert. The only thing that came to their minds was maybe Yusuke was upset he wasn’t invited and Kuwabara was bringing you.

Botan stared at them with a sweat drop.

“You two are humanity’s best hope?” she sighed.

“Ummm…can we head out now?” you said with a small sweat drop.

You were worried if it continued as it was, you would end up in the next dust ball. Yusuke and Kuwabara blinked and turned to look at you. Kuwabara sighed after a few more minutes of looking at your pleading face. He tugged on your hand and without looking at Yusuke walked up to his three friends and gave them a huge smile.

“Let’s go before all the best seats are taken.”

The three guys stood there for a few minutes before nodding and following behind their leader and you, who was being sort of dragged along. Yusuke just fumed as he watched you all disappear back into the school and headed off to party.

As the sun began to set, heavy rain began to fall over the town. It appeared to be the best setting for Yusuke’s fowl mood. When he headed back to his apartment, his fowl mood grew worse.

“What?! Kurama’s not here either?!”

Yusuke was barely into the apartment and he was already finding that all the plans had gone to pieces. The only people who showed up were Kaito, Yanagisawa, Genkai, and Botan. His mother didn’t count, however she too was there; although she was in the kitchen making herself something to eat as she had already prepared dinner for Genkai, Kaito, and Yanagisawa who were in the middle of finishing their meals.

“He wasn’t at school today.” Kaito said as he sat on floor.

“Is EVERYONE playing hooky?!” growled Yusuke as his entire body quivered in rage and a sweat drop appeared on his head.

It is bad if he of all people is complaining about some of his ‘crew’ were playing hooky; as he was the hooky king when it came to skipping out on going to school.

Yusuke gave another frustrated growl mixed with a huff before turning back towards the door.

“Fine! I’ll tackle this myself!”

“Hold it.” Genkai said while kicking her former student in the back of his head.

“The portal creator’s not going anywhere. We have time to get in touch with Kurama.” She said taking a sip of her tea.

Yusuke grumbled as he rubbed the back of his head and gave an annoyed look at his former teacher.

“There’ve been a lot of suicides at Irima cave. Locals avoid it.” Kaito said, knowing some about the area of the cave, as it was located in his district.

“We need to prepare ourselves for this one, I think.” Yanagisawa said.

He seemed to be one of the few in the room to remember the test Genkai had done to Yusuke to teach him to not go running into something without planning.

Yusuke growled and stood up.

“Whatever! Look me up when you’re ready!” huffed Yusuke.

If everyone else wanted to play around and not take this thing seriously, then fine with him. He’d have some fun of his own until everyone else was ready to save the world.

“Where at?” Yanagisawa asked, curious as to where Yusuke was going to go.

“The nearest pachinko parlor(1)!” Yusuke growled his hand now on the door.

“Grab me some cigs while you’re out!” Astuko said coming out of the kitchen with her finger in the air.

She had run out of her cancer sticks a while ago and didn’t feel like heading out to get some more.

“Oh, go puff on your finger!!” growled Yusuke before going out of the apartment, not without slamming the door behind him.

Astuko pouted and huffed before going back into the kitchen.

“Should he really go out alone like that?” Yanagisawa asked, pointing in the direction Yusuke had just left.

He had a looked that showed he was a bit confused.

“Stupid people do stupid things.” Genkai said, before taking another sip of her tea. “And he’s worried about Kuwabara and (YAFN)-chan, I think.”
