Book 6 - Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Hiei’s open Jagan looked around the snow-covered landscape, picking up faint traces of the wounded demon they were tracking. They were after Mukuro, having found her earlier that day, trailed by a few followers. They unfortunately lost her during their battle, the fugitive demon simply evading them for a time. She had fully gone rogue, attacking outposts and demons loyal to the current ruler, Aoi. Unfortunately for Mukuro, Hiei decided to track her using the Jagan, effectively following her youki. They were in his homeland, and despite what he thought about the Koorime, he wanted to protect his mother’s people. They planned to get in, remove her and get out, but that plan was not exactly following through.
As they followed Mukuro’s trail, the hiyoukai stopped abruptly, causing his mate to run into him, and Yusuke into her, effectively making a three-demon sandwich. The little mo-zaku turned to the other spirit detective and scowled.
“Hey, Urameshi. You’re a friend, and I like you and all, but no threesomes ok? Back up off of me.”
Yusuke backed up, hands up as he pulled away from the other mo-zaku. “Hey, next time don’t stop in the road. Talk to your mate, he’s the one who stopped in the middle of the path.”
Kurama walked up to his old friend, trying to sense what he had. “What is it Hiei? What is wrong?”
The hiyoukai turned to Amaya and scowled. “Maya, why is our daughter here?”
“What the hell?”
Hiei turned to look back at the way they were headed, closing his other two eyes and focusing on his daughter’s energy. She was nearby, but where exactly he needed to find out.
“She’s in the village, with Yukina.”
Amaya walked up to Hiei, standing next to him, a silent conversation going on through their telepathic link. Yusuke and Kurama could tell they were discussing a game plan, as they didn’t want to lose Mukuro, but needed to check their daughter’s well being. Amaya turned to Kurama, speaking quickly as Hiei stood behind her.
“Kurama, don’t lose Mukuro, We’ll catch up.”
Hiei proceeded to pick his wife up and carry her away in a flash, holding her bridal style as he ran through the trees. As they ran, Amaya held on for dear life, arm around his neck causing her to move into her mate. She smiled, leaning into his most intimate areas with a well placed hip.
“Since when did you start keeping your sword in the front of your pants?”
Hiei simply kept running, but smiled a bit as he ran, moving toward the village of his mother’s people as fast as he could. His wife was concerned with his growing maleness due to her proximity while he was concerned over his daughter’s well being. While he enjoyed the position they were in, other matters were more pressing.
“No comment huh?” She pushed her hip into him more, teasing him.
He smirked, “We don’t have time to play right now. You seriously need to get laid don’t you?”
“Do your job often more than you do.”
Hiei stopped outside the village, putting his mate down unceremoniously, but allowing her to land on her feet. “I think five or more times a night is doing my job better than most. Don’t you agree?”
Amaya grinned as she looked around and felt the energies of the other demons nearby. Within many of them she sensed fear and panic. A few she simply sensed stupidity with brute strength and marked them as Mukuro’s lackeys. She followed Hiei into the village, both with weapon’s out, hers an ebony bow and his a hardened steel sword, and looking around for their daughter. Hiei stood still, reaching out to find her aura when a group of demons walked around the corner, not one of them a Koorime. There were about four of them, the tallest seeming to be the leader, his look only slightly more intelligent than the rest.
“Look, it’s Koenma’s little thorns. Let’s kill them and get our reward from Mukuro!”
Amaya snarled at them, bowstring taught, Hiei at her back with sword in hand.
“No time for this. We need to find Hinote.”
“She’s with Yukina, she’s fine. Let’s take care of these bastards first. They won’t take too long.”
As the demons attacked, Amaya’s attention was taken from them for a split second. She glanced over and saw a very young Koorime helping a red haired woman climb the mountain. Amaya recognized it as Mukuro and went to go after her. She was stopped for only a second as Yusuke and Kurama showed up. She turned to the other members of her team as she ran, hunting her original quarry.
“Hey Dimwit! Take care of these assholes. Hiei, come with me!”
As they began to rush off, both Amaya and Hiei heard familiar footsteps running up behind them. Amaya turned and saw Hinote moving to pass by her and her father, the blue black blur the only thing she really saw as the girl ran. She never stopped as her parents cried out for her.
“Hinote!”
The young demon kept going as her father turned and yelled again as they moved and caught up with Hinote, who had ran up behind the Koorime girl and Mukuro. Hiei and Amaya stopped short as they recognized Harime with Mukuro, helping the demon woman stand.
“Harime! What the hell are you doing?” Amaya called out to her niece, looking to Hiei, not liking the situation at all. She watched as the scene moved in slow motion. First, Amaya heard Mukuro threaten her child, attempting to blast the girl with her uninjured arm. As the blast came at Hinote, she dropped to her stomach and rolled away, pushing herself up and kneeling to take a shot of her own. She took aim, powers raised to full strength. As she moved, her clothes changed from her normal shirt and jeans, her own powers using the snow to cover her body with a kimono style top.
Hiei watched as his daughter’s powers came out, her eyes mimicking her mother’s as she took aim, her sights set just above Mukuro’s head. He looked up to where she had aimed her energy, the snow above Mukuro already visibly unstable.
“NO HINOTE! DON’T! YOU’LL HIT HARIME!”
Hiei’s voice reached her too late as the snow came crashing down from the mountain the second the blast had reverberated through the mountain. All three watched as Harime jumped to push Mukuro out of the way and both were buried under the snow and ice. Hiei watched as the snow started falling toward the three of them, neither mother nor daughter reacting as the avalanche fell toward them, both stunned at the fate of Mukuro and Harime.
“Maya!”
Hinote looked at her mother as her father tackled her, pulling her out of harm’s way. A split second later, Yusuke wrapped his arms around her and pulled her away, the avalanche covering the places where she and her mother once stood quite effectively.
“Hinote, are you okay?”
She nodded at her boyfriend’s father as Yukina, Rui, and Kurama came up, Hiei helping Amaya out of the snow. All six demons fell silent as they looked at the place where the snow and ice rested. Yukina was silent as full realization hit her; her daughter had died.
“Harime. She’s gone isn’t she?”
Hinote watched in stunned silence at the pile of snow, her aunt quiet after the question. She felt the small hand on her back, turning with hiru stone tears in her eyes, the gems shattering into water as they fell to the ground, her own hiruseki stone outside of her shirt for the first time in front of her aunt.
“I didn’t, mean to… I…”
“It’s alright Hinote, I do not blame you for her death, it is better for her. For such a young child, she had a very cold heart. Hopefully King Enma will have mercy on her when he and his son decide her judgment.”
