Masaru’s back hit the wall like a wet bag of cement. The girl, Nina, hurled her weight into his front with a force that nearly knocked the wind out of him. She forced her lips onto his, using way too much tongue.
“Gee, when you asked me if I wanted to do something, I though you meant, like, go to a movie,” Masaru gasped when she finally allowed him to breath again. She had taken him to a disused warehouse behind the shopping district. It was apparent that it was a common place for teenagers to go to fool around. There was an old mattress on the floor that, frankly, looked less than hygienic.
“Ya know, if you got your heart set on this we could go to a motel,” Masaru said, “I do have the money.”
“No way. If we‘re seen going to a place like that, everyone will know what we‘re doing,” she appalled. She pushed Masaru down onto the thing. She was a lot stronger than he expected. She giggled, “This is going to so awesome! I can’t wait to tell my friends about it.”
“You don’t want anyone to know what we’re doing, but you’re going to tell all your friends?” Masaru puzzled.
She giggled again as she crawled up to straddle his thighs, “You’re cute, Masaru. Come on, let’s make out.” She wrapped her arms around his head to draw him in for a kiss.
“Huh, you sure are, uh, aggressive,” He said, unconsciously leaning away from her. It was a good thing he had. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have seen the thing inside her mouth until it was too late. A big red and yellow organ lolled out of her mouth, tipped with a barbed stinger that oozed green poison. “Holy Crap!” He shouted as he dodged away from the thing, dumping the girl on the floor.
He rolled, sprung to his feet. Nina rose like a poorly operated marionette puppet, her arms hanging limply at her sides, her legs moving in awkward angles. With a guttural grunt, her head snapped up and her face… Her jaw hung wide open as if broken off its hinges, the stinger hanging out like a nightmarish tongue. And her eyes were gone, replaced by a set of insect eyes that bugged out of her head. Those eyes turned on Masaru. She crocked like a bullfrog, “Kiiilllllll.”
“Nina?” Masaru squeaked, gawking at her. He’d seen that stinger before, the Demon Bees. Was she possessed by one of the Demon Bees? He didn’t even know they could do that. ‘Damn stupid Spirit World intelligence, don’t tell you nothing until it’s too late,’ he thought. Then he realized another thing they failed to tell him. What do you do with a possessed person?
He couldn’t fight her. The demon was calling the shots, but regardless that body belonged to Nina, a girl he went to school with. He didn’t want to hurt her. Unfortunately, the demon in control of her had no such scruples. The girl launched herself at him, screaming. He grabbed for her shoulders, used the momentum of her own attack to throw her down on the mattress. He was on her, before she could get up, pinning her wrists with his hands and her shoulders with his knees.
“Come on Nina, snap out of it!” She struggled hard against him. He was having a difficult time keeping her down. Was it the demon giving her such strength? He pleaded with her, not knowing what else to do, “Fight it Nina! Come on!”
It wasn’t working, “What do I do?”
“Move out of the way!” A hand gasped Masaru’s shoulder and pulled him off the possessed girl. She sprung to her feet and charged at the interloper. It was Yusuke!
Yusuke crouched down his hands posed to one side of him. Then his energy spiked, so high even someone with Masaru’s lame spirit awareness could see it. He uttered some words, incomprehensible to Masaru. Just as the bug eyed possessed girl neared him, he shouted, “Purify!” A blinding light filled the space.
When Masaru could see clearly again, he saw the girl standing in front of Yusuke, dazed, but perfectly normal again. Her head lolled forward, mouth opened, and a dried up husk of an insect fell out. Then she fell as well. Yusuke caught her and gently lowered her to the floor.
He turned to Masaru, “I suppose you’re wondering why I’m here.”
Sitting on his butt on the concrete floor, Masaru just stared up at him. Back at Kurama’s house, he hadn’t taken the time to properly gawk at the older boy. Boy? He had to be what twenty one now. He remembered Yusuke being good looking-- though he had more than suspected that his memory was colored by a bit of idol worship he might have had of him.
Or maybe not. Yusuke was still every bit the angelic presence that Masaru remembered, his handsome face was framed in the light from a broken-out window in the background, like a cliché movie. Yusuke had retained his boyish looks, but with less baby fat, lending his jaw a firmer look that was frankly, sexy. His body frame filled out nicely as well. His arms and legs were much longer, stronger, his chest and shoulders were broader.
“Ya see,” Yusuke said as he sashayed over, “Hiei would have come to keep an eye on you, cuz it’s his job. But he’s too busy getting chewed out by Kurama right now.”
“I don’t’ understand,” Masaru’s voice wobbled as he stared wide-eyed at Yusuke.
Yusuke starched his head, “Well, ya know, Hiei’s a lot older than you and stuff. So I guess it’s a little inappropriate for him to be dating you or whatever.”
“Not that,” Masaru spit, “That thing you just did to Nina…. And Hiei and I aren‘t going out!”
“Really you two certainly looked cozy there in Kurama’s bed,” Yusuke wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.
“W- well yeah, I guess we did,” Masaru stammered, “I just sort of got caught up in the moment and wasn‘t thinking with my brain. Ya know... hormones and an all that… we hardly even know each other-- Wait a second! Forget my personal life, what was that you just did to Nina?”
“Oh yeah,” Yusuke scratched his nose, “that was just a minor demonic purification technique. It came as part of the package when I learned Genkai’s Spirit Wave. You don’t know how to do stuff like that, do ya? Spirit World should have either taught you or given you an assistant who had them.”
“You know about Spirit World?” Masaru was slow.
“Of course-- ha! I guess I didn’t introduce myself properly,” Yusuke held out his hand. “Yusuke Urameshi, professional bad-ass punk, armature aspirer to the demon throne, and former Spirit Detective. You, of course must be Masaru Yutaka. Hiei told me about you taking over my position the other day. I kinda wanted to meet you since.”
“You wanted to meet me?” Masaru blushed and then, “Wait, you were Spirit Detective?”
“Yeah I--”
A sudden ruckus disturbed them, a loud crash, moldy old boxes falling down off their stacks, dust flying up to cloud the air and two very loud grim reapers shouted from atop their oars.
“What in the name of the Great Lord Yama are you doing here, Yusuke?” A girl with blue hair shouted.
“Geez, that’s some thanks, Botan, after I saved your new boy,” Yusuke hissed at her between his teeth.
“He’s not my boy,” Botan defended, “I didn’t even know about this until Hiei brought it up the other day and I tell you I’m not happy about it!”
“Masaru, we need to go now. You know you can’t be here,” Hinageshi pleaded with him before her eyes twitched over to Yusuke.
Masaru glared her down, “He said he used to be Spirit Detective.”
“Well, he was,” Hinageshi twiddled her thumbs nervously, “Listen we can talk about this later, we should really go.”
“What’s you chicks’ problem? You’re acting like there’s a bomb about to go off-- there isn’t, is there?” Said Yusuke.
Botan pulled Yusuke aside while Hinageshi attempted to herd Masaru away. Masaru knew exactly what the chicks’ problem was, so didn’t fight it. On his way out, he picked Nina up, intending to take her home.
Botan spoke to Yusuke, “I’m going to be frank with you, Yusuke. Spirit World has forbidden you and Masaru from having any contact with each other. I’m sorry I’m not allowed to tell you any more than that. I’m pushing it, telling you so honestly.”
“Why? Is it because I’m a demon and they’re afraid I’ll corrupt the squirt or some shit?” Yusuke demanded.
“No no, it has nothing to do with you being a demon,” Botan told him, “Really; we let him hang around with Hiei, if anyone would be considered a corruptive influence… You know that even though he works with Spirit World, we still categorize in as a hostile evil entity?”
“Why then?”
“I can’t tell you.” And that was all Yusuke was able to get out of her. The subject dropped after she gave him a firm warning to stay away from Masaru Yutaka. Yeah, that was going to work.
* * *
Saturday, no school, Masaru turned down a date with a very unnatural blond in favor of spending the day tracking down the evil beekeeper. His Spirit Phone was tucked away in his pocket. He was trying to locate him via his newly discovered awareness. His range was still shit so he sought out and visited derelict places were the evil beekeeper would be likely to make his nests. So far he was unsuccessful. Now he was weaving between the rows and stacks of empty, abandoned steal storage containers, concentrating on picking up a whiff of demonic energy.
All of the sudden, one sprung up as if from nowhere, right behind him! With a cry of alarm, he tucked and rolled about to face his adversary, Spirit Shield materialized on his arm.
Hiei laughed at him. “That was your latest lesson in spirit awareness. Talented demons can mask their energy, making them very hard to detect even if they are right behind you.”
“You are so lucky my spirit weapon isn’t a projectile!” Masaru hissed between his teeth.
“You could never fire it fast enough to hit me,” Hiei said superiorly. “I suppose the next lesson I give you should be in recognizing and identifying individual signatures. You should be able to tell my aura apart from that of other demons.”
Masaru pouted, but didn’t argue. “What are you doing here anyway, Hiei? Ya have a lead on the evil beekeeper? I hope so, cuz I’ve got a bone to pick with him.”
“Ah yes, Yusuke told me about what happened with that Nina girl,” Hiei said in a low voice. “Tell me, what were you doing in that warehouse with the girl anyway?”
“Making out… maybe more,” Masaru sniffed as if he were daring Hiei to object.
But Hiei laughed at him, “Sure, I’d like to see that.”
“It’s true!” Masaru fumed, “I’ll have you know I’ve fooled around with lots of girls. They can’t keep their hands off me!”
“Oh I see,” Hiei said, casually turning away, “then you’re not interested in continuing were we left off, remember at Kurama’s house?”
“Uh,” Masaru balked. Before he had a chance to consider his options, Hiei moved on him. Masaru’s back hit a steal container with a resounding, clang. Hiei pressed his chest into Masaru’s body, his hand snaked up to touch the boy’s cheek, drew his face down to met his. A warm hand caressed his neck. Warm lips caressed his lips. A hot wet tongue flicked over his lips. So much heat. Masaru was melting and Hiei was lapping him up.
His knees buckled. He slid down the steal container until he was sitting on the stained concrete, his slim legs spread out in front of him. Hiei sunk to his knees, between Masaru’s legs. He leaned forward into the kiss, placing his weight on his palms where they rested on the ground in front of his knees.
Masaru broke off abruptly, maybe to deny his pleasure with the situation. His words caught in his throat when he spied Hiei’s position, kneeling on all fours between his legs, with the light blush that lust had painted on his cheeks. He breathed, “Oh man, you’re cute.”
Hiei frowned at the word ‘cute’, but was unable to reply when Masaru’s lips returned to his. Hiei kissed him back ravenously. His teeth nicked Masaru’s lips, he tasted blood. Hiei’s teeth were sharp, he realized. Well, he was demon. Hiei’s hands grasped his hips. His hands were so delightfully strong. Once again Masaru was reminded he was a demon as Hiei’s sharp nails pressed through his jeans.
Hiei’s excitement mounted and he plastered his body to Masaru’s. That was when Masaru felt something hard rubbing intently against his bottom. What was that? Hiei groaned as he clutched his thighs, spreading his legs even farther apart to let that hardness grind even harder against the crease of his ass. It was then with horror Masaru identified that hardness and the act it was suggesting.
“No!” He pushed Hiei away.
Hiei wouldn’t be shook so easily, “What’s your problem? You don’t want to?”
“Not like that,” Masaru spouted, “N-not there.”
“And how would you go about it, kid?” Hiei raised an eyebrow.
“I wouldn’t!” Masaru tried to wiggle out from under Hiei, but Hiei held him fast.
“Don’t lie to me, kid. I was inside your mind, remember? I didn’t probe into your thoughts or anything, but I did pick up some very strong impressions. One being, how unbelievably turned on you get with another guy touching you. You like a set of strong arms, don’t you? A broad chest, firm muscular shoulders. Well, guess what, those things come packaged with a dick. If you want to be with a guy, you’ll have to cope with that.”
“I don’t want to be with a guy!” Masaru shouted desperately.
“Foolish as any human,” Hiei griped calmly standing up. His erection was right in Masaru’s face. He made no effort to hide it.
Looking at the budge in Hiei’s pants, Masaru became acutely aware of that area in his own anatomy. His entire pubic area felt strangely tingly like his bottom half had been dipped in lemon-lime soda. And then swiftly as can be, Hiei reached down, unbuckled his belts and lowered his fly. A thick pink erection sprung out. He wriggled his pants down until his balls, upper thighs and a pretty little triangle of pubic hair were visible. Masaru’s mouth dropped open.
“See, is a dick so scary?” He shifted his hips forward so that his dick was only breath away from Masaru’s lips. “Taste it.”
“Y-you can’t be serious,” Masaru’s eyes darted from the phallus to Hiei’s face and back again.
“I won’t force you,” Hiei told him smoothly, “But I assure you’ll enjoy it, if you just give it a try. You know you want to.” Hiei nudged his hips a little, nearly touching Masaru’s lips with the tip of his penis.
In spite of his apparent attraction to males, a life time of living in a homophobic society had instilled Masaru with an aversion to even the idea of coming in contact with another man’s junk. Males where supposed to be revolted by that part of the anatomy, even though they were the possessors of said parts. Only women should want to touch a guy there. But they usually thought it was worst ugly-- at the best comical.
But now that he had one in his face, looking at it up close and at this angle, Masaru wondered, were they really all that bad? Masaru evaluated the rosy twin spheres that hung heavily between Hiei’s legs, his balls. They weren’t so gross. In fact once he thought of it intellectually, balls weren’t that different from breasts. The both dangled from the body, bounced when shifted, produced milky white fluids. Actually balls might be better. They’re sure more sensitive than breasts. And you could fondle both balls in one hand, leaving the other free for other activates-- perhaps to stroke the nearby shaft.
Hiei’s shaft was long and just a little thick, big considering the size of the rest of him. It was hard and pink with a glossy sheen from the fluids that dripped from its tip. It vaguely resembled a melting ice-pop with a slight upward tilted curve to it. It wouldn’t be cold like an ice-pop. Masaru was sure this thing was hot. He wondered what it tasted like.
Masaru knew what cum smelled like and what it felt like, as most teenage boys with a free hand and spare time might. But as of yet Masaru hadn’t the courage to sample his own flavors, so to speak.
Masaru licked his lips. Thought, ‘Here it goes.’ leaned forward. Just at that second Hiei stepped back with a curse. He quickly put his clothes to rights. Masaru was about to question him when he heard the other call down to them.
“Hey, I thought I sensed ya around here, Short Stack,” It was Yusuke! He looked over at Masaru and grinned, “Ha, should have guessed I’d find you with him. What’s up-- uh, what was your name again?”
“Masaru Yutaka,” Hiei supplied tersely.
“Right,” Yusuke nodded absently, “So what are the two of you doing in this shit hole?”
Hiei smirked as if he were about to say something derogatory so Masaru intervened, “We’re scouting around for the evil beekeeper’s hideout.”
“Well if it helps, I thought I sensed a big clustering of weak auras buzzing around that closed down shopping Mall, about three miles west of here.” Yusuke told him.
“The old mall, of course!” Masaru clapped his hands. He knew that place. He had gone there as a child. It was built in the early eighties with a late fifties retro look. Everything was all turquoise and chrome with Coca-Cola signs and posters of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe hanging everywhere. There was even this big pink Cadillac car hanging from wires on the ceiling. It had closed down five years ago after they built the new mall uptown.
“Thanks Yusuke, I… I’d better get going,” Masaru made to retreat, but Yusuke grabbed his arm. A hot flush ran through Masaru’s body. He hoped it didn’t show on his face.
Yusuke said, “How’s about I come with you. We could talk about a few things, ya know, Spirit Detective to Spirit Detective.” He flashed a grin.
That grin, man it took him back. Back to that day, so long ago, when his pretty boy in green stopped to play with him. Here nine years later his pretty boy was here smiling at him again. With every fiber of his being, Masaru wanted to say yes to that smile and play with his pretty boy in green-- though he wasn’t wearing green today. He was wearing a red jacket over a T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans so tight they should be illegal.
“I couldn’t,” Masaru whispered. He placed his hand on Yusuke’s to remove it from his person, but lingered there for a second as the contact sent a wave of nervous tingles to his belly. A lump lodged in his throat. He wanted to stay with his pretty boy, Yusuke. Wanted to wrap his arms around Yusuke and hold him, hold him forever.
He couldn’t, not with his agreement with Spirit World. If he continued associating with Yusuke, it would only be a matter of time before he realized who Masaru was. And then Yusuke’s life would be forfeit. Masaru couldn’t allow that to happen. He tried to disengage Yusuke’s hand.
Yusuke tightened his grip, “Tell me just one thing, then. Why doesn’t Spirit World want you talking to me?”
Masaru froze. “I-I can’t say. Please, Yusuke, just take my word for it, it’s for your own good.” He tried again to pull out of Yusuke’s grasp, but Yusuke tugged hard on his wrist causing him to loose his balance and topple face first into his chest. It was so firm. Masaru could feel the toned muscles under his shirt, could smell his musky odor mixed with soap. It would have been among one of the most arousing moments of his young life, if not for the nagging voice in the back of his head that said, ‘You’re not allowed to be here!’
“Listen up kid,” Yusuke told him, his voice taking on a serious timbre, “I’ve had a lot of shit in my life, had to deal with a lot of crap. There’s a lot of stuff I can tolerate, but one thing I just can’t take is people lying to me and keeping secrets. And telling me it’s for my own good just pisses me off even more.”
“Let the kid go,” Hiei said in a deathly calm tone. At the same time a blade appeared at Yusuke’s throat as if by magic.
A bemused smile twitched on Yusuke’s lips before he removed his hands, taking a step back from the boy. “No problem. See ya later-- Oh and don’t forget to check out the old mall.”
When he had gone, Masaru breathed, “Thanks Hiei--”
He found himself suddenly thrown against the wall of a steal storage container. “Where were we?” Hiei husked before taking Masaru’s lips again.
“N-no,” Masaru sputtered as he tried to push Hiei off of him.
“What’s the matter, now,” Hiei demanded, “We were going good before Yusuke interrupted us.”
“And I’m glad he did!” Masaru shouted with a short burst of strength he shoved Hiei off of him.
Hiei stumbled a few paces back, but retained his footing, shook his head, “I don’t understand.”
Masaru sighed, “I don’t want… this. And don’t tell me you beg the differ! I know I started it. I got… excited about it, physically. But intellectually I don’t want it. It’s not you-- I know how cliché that sounds, but still…. I made a mistake and I’m sorry if I lead you on, but we can’t--”
“You would do it for Yusuke though,” Hiei said out of the blue.
“W-what?!” Masaru felt his face flush, “Where did that come from?”
“I can tell,” Hiei told him, “You’re attracted to him. I heard your heart beat skip when he touched you and the smell of your arousal… It was never that strong when you were with me.”
Masaru laughed nervously, “Can’t deny it then, can I? What can I say? He’s an attractive guy--”
“He is, but then so is Kurama. He attracts almost anyone regardless of gender or sexual preference,” Hiei pointed out, “But you barely responded to him at all. No, there’s something… special about Yusuke to you. And the fact the Spirit World doesn’t want you to be near each other makes it look even more suspicious.”
“Is that what this is about? You want to know my secret,” Masaru could have laughed, “And here I was thinking you were just getting jealous and possessive.”
Hiei took an aggressive step forward. Masaru would have jumped back if his back wasn’t already pressed to the steal container. “Who says I’m not?”
Masaru swallowed and looked in both directions as if checking that they weren’t being observed. “I’m not supposed to tell Yusuke or anyone who doesn’t know about Spirit World, but you don’t fall into either of those categories, so…. Alright. I guess it would be nice to get it off my chest after all these years, anyway.”
“I’m listening,” Hiei said sitting down on the pavement. He bid Masaru to do the same.
“You see it has to do with how I gained my position as Spirit Detective,” He began. He told Hiei about that day so many years ago when his path first crossed with Yusuke Urameshi’s. He explained, “So you see, Yusuke lost his life to save me when it wasn’t necessary, all because I wanted his attention. I might as well have murdered him. That’s why I signed up to become Spirit Detective and bring him back to life.
“Ha, but imagine my surprise to find out he became a Spirit Detective too. I wonder what Spirit World did for him. I’ll never have a chance to ask cuz the more he sees me the higher the chance that he’ll figure out I’m the little kid he pushed out from in front of a moving car. If that happens Spirit World will take his life back.”
Hiei had been very quiet through Masaru’s story, and very tense. He stood up suddenly, his brows knitted and his mouth set in a frown. “I have to go.”
“Uh, okay,” Masaru startled, “But what about the mall, aren’t we gonna go check it?”
“Tomorrow,” Hiei peered back at Masaru before he left. “I have to ask, after all these years, do you think you’re still in love with him?”
“Come on,” Masaru scoffed, “Even if I where allowed to go near him, I couldn’t. I mean, what good could come from two guys--”
“You’re dodging the question,” Hiei pointed out in a warning tone, “Do you still love him?”
Masaru pulled his knees up to his chin, looking down at his toes he muttered, “Maybe.”
Hiei muttered, “I can appreciate that.” Something about the demon’s tone said more then he was saying. What that was, Masaru had no idea. Hiei turned from him, “I have to go.”
“Yeah, that would be best,” Masaru nodded weakly.
A mile away, Yusuke was sitting on a park bench, his teeth clenched, his cell phone crushed in his hand. It had rung a few minutes ago, Hiei’s number. It was rare to have Hiei call him. It was the boy’s voice on the phone, distant as if he was a few feet away from the phone. “I’m not supposed to tell Yusuke or anyone who doesn’t know about Spirit World….”
Yusuke heard the whole thing up to Spirit World’s threat to take back Yusuke’s life if Masaru should have contact with him again. After that Hiei said, “I have to go.” And then he crushed his phone.

TBC…
A/N: Ah, fun with phones. Speaking of which, how about the Spirit Phone? I had a lot of fun using that thing in this story, making up apps to replace those bulky gadgets that Yusuke never got around to using and coming up with new uses that they probably couldn’t imagine when the original series was made. More fun with phones next time.

* * *
