Chapter 03

Kurama yawned as he sat up in bed and blinked at the sunlight streaming through his window. It was Monday. Glancing at the clock he saw he still had about an hour and some minutes to do his morning ritual and go to school.

It took only a matter of minutes, before Kurama was dressed and ready to go. "Okasan, you're up?" he asked as he came into the kitchen hearing his mother talking to someone, probably her boyfriend. But that wasn't his mother's boyfriend sitting across from her and drinking tea.

"Good morning, Schuichi, this is Yomi," Shiori introduced them with a smile, "You knew him during summer camp?"

"Uh yes…" Kurama said managing a small smile. Summer camp was the excuse he had used when he went away for the dark tournament, but why was Yomi here? Didn't his mother see his horns and stuff? Then again Yomi was probably using one of his spells to make him appear human. "Hello again, Yomi, how are you doing?"

"Quite well, Schuichi, would you like to have a seat? Your mother's tea is quite good," he said with a calm and gentle smile to the redhead.

"Actually I have to leave for school soon, sorry," Kurama apologized. This still left the question of why he was here. How did he find him, where he lived? Who told him?

In the past when Schuichi was Youko Kurama in the Makai, Yomi and he had once been lovers. That affair had lasted a little over a month, more than most of Youko's relationships but still short lived when Youko had moved on to another area. He hadn't seen Yomi again until the Dark tournament; and even after that never, until now. He had not expected another encounter in all his millennia of life.

"Well, I don't want to keep you too long then, will you be available later?" he asked with a kind smile, "I'd like to talk to you, catch up on old times perhaps."

"Of course," Kurama answered, signature Schuichi Minamino smile in place. "I'll see you later then, Yomi. Mother."

Shiori smiled at him and he left the house. It made things a bit difficult to try and focus on at school. What was Yomi even doing here? He had asked these questions over and over and tried to come up with explanations but each time they were either completely absurd of else shot down by reason.

When they were last together Kurama had clearly told him that what was between him and Youko had ended then and it would never again come into play for him. If someone he knew was hurt he wouldn't have come in so unobtrusively and he would have contacted him through Koenma anyway for any dire emergency.

The only idea that didn't sound so incredibly far-fetched was that it wasn't Yomi and actually a shape shifter of sorts, but Yomi would never be so careless as to allow a shape shifter to imitate him. That was more plausible though than the idea of space aliens imitating him.

"Schuichi!" a girl cooed.

Looking up the redhead was faced with a somewhat large group of girls, he didn't recognize them as being from this school though the uniform clearly said they did attend he had never seen them before. Of course he never usually paid much attention to the girls who came up to him, usually it was to ask about a date or other such in which such case he would always politely turn them down.

"We wanted to ask you a few questions," said the girl continuing to smile, the others following suite. "Do you have a girlfriend?"

"Eh?" he asked clearly puzzled. If he had been anyone else he might have commited 'face-fault' however being the graceful Schuichi Minamino and Youko Kurama he was incapable of such an act of lacking grace and perfection.

"Oh, kami! You already like someone! Who is it?" she asked, every girl leaning in a bit closer to surround his desk. "Is it Cheryl?"

Upon his look bewildered puzzlement she started naming a whole list of names, that continued until he had left the classroom and was starting down the hall to his next class, and even then they were still going. "Don't tell me it's Georgine! Mourilla? Kaulline! Hartie?"

"None of those," Kurama said loud enough so they could hear him as he went and took a seat in the classroom, as the rabid girls named more names.

"Alicen! Florence? Laury? Janie! Naru! Ouka! Umi?" the girls continued their seemingly endless list of names.

"Ladies, you are not in my class, would you kindly go to your own classes?" The teacher demanded as she entered the room glaring at the girls pointedly. The girls didn't look happy about it but they were forced to leave. The fangirls were getting way more obsessive than usual, were they ever in so large a group and demanding as this before?

He didn't have to dwell on it so long after that, nor on thoughts of what the demon lord Yomi could possibly want to see him for in the Ningen realm. Because he needed his brain in top functioning order so that he didn't slip up in this class. This particular teacher, however grateful he may have been to her for ordering away the obsessive fangirls, was incredibly ruthless in grading and in lab experiment recording, if it wasn't exactly right points were taken off. He always prided himself in his top marks for everything, that included this one class as well as the others.

`

Yusuke managed to arrive right on time at the time Kurama's school got out at three o'clock which it was almost, about now. He had to cut out early just so he could be here. He was sure Takenaka wouldn't be so happy but he couldn't care less about that old fart.

"What are you doing here?"

Yusuke looked up and glared at the fire demon. "I could ask you the same question. Beat it."

"No." Hiei said as he dropped from the tree and came to stand in front of Yusuke, glancing over at Kurama's school. "What are you doing here?" he repeated.

"If you really want to know, I'm waiting for Kurama, my boyfriend," Yusuke smirked at the short youkai slightly. He saw a muscle in the fire demon's forehead throb with what must have been a flash of anger. "What are you doing here?"

"I don't have to tell you." Hiei said coldly.

"Then don't. But I still say beat it, if you don't want your butt kicked for showing your face around here after what you did." Yusuke told him with a glare. Hiei returned it with equal ferocity.

"Hello Kurama."

"Yomi… what are you doing here?"

The two boys looked over to the gates of the school where, none other than one of the three Makai lords, Yomi stood speaking with Kurama, who looked surprised though not quite as shocked as both Yusuke and Hiei were by the demon lord's arrival.

"Did you know he was in the Ningenkai?" Yusuke asked Hiei.

"No. Did you?" Hiei returned.

"Not a clue." Yusuke answered. "Wonder what he's doing here."

Yusuke started across the street. "What are you doing?" Hiei hissed after him.

"Well unlike you, I have the license to go over there and nab my redhead." Yusuke said smirking back at the shorter male as he continued over to the pair.

Hiei clenched his fists to his side and darted off back into the trees. No mater what he may have done, Yusuke was absolutely right.

“Hello Kurama. Yomi? Hey, long time no see, how are you?” Yusuke said as he came over and was just noticing Yomi talking to Kurama.

“Oh, Yusuke,” said Yomi looking up, not really surprised but not really happy either.

“Well sorry if you’re catching up on old times but do you mind if I steal Kurama from you for a bit?” Yusuke asked with a grin as he looked over at Kurama who smiled at him.

“I’m sorry, we were just talking,” Yomi said surprised at the hanyou’s boldness.

“Well he is my boyfriend, and we had a date today,” Yusuke explained.

“Sorry about that Yomi,” Kurama told him with an apologetic smile.

“I see,” Yomi nodded, “We can talk later.”

Yusuke grinned and taking Kurama’s hand they headed off for their date. Yomi watched the pair for a moment before glancing over where Hiei was. This was an odd development the Makai lord had not been expecting.

`

“So what was Yomi doing there?” Yusuke asked over the table, “Why’s he in the ningenkai at all? Do you know?”

“Not really, I just realized this morning when he was sitting in my kitchen drinking tea with Shiori,” Kurama explained. “I haven’t had a chance to really talk to him yet, and I have no idea what he wants to talk about either.”

“That’s odd,” Yusuke decided, taking a sip of his soft drink. The two of them were seated in a restaurant, not exactly the lowest of the low but not fine dining either. It was simple and affordable, one of the places Yusuke liked the best for dinners and lunches, though in his opinion their breakfasts were hardly fit for the trash.

Both Kurama and Yusuke didn’t talk too loudly, as both a fire demon and a Makai demon lord’s life energy’s were nearby. They were suppressed but not enough that either the kitsune or hanyou couldn’t know they were there.

`

Hiei slunk closer to his targets quietly and slowly. A waitress was leaving the kitchens, with an order of white chowder and a few other drinks. That would work. Hiei followed silently in the shadow of the waitress waiting as she came closer to his target’s table. The two were on their guard, but there wasn’t going to be a way for them to dodge this.

Hiei shoved the waitress so she was going to fall forward onto Yusuke, spilling her contents onto him and therefore making him look ugly and unable to be seen with Kurama.

However the girl must have recognized Yusuke as a previous customer who was not to be messed with and managed to turn so that the contents of her tray fell on the other occupant of the table. That wasn’t a part of the plan. Especially now that Hiei had been revealed as the culprit.

That can’t be good…

“Kurama?” Yusuke asked startled. The entire encounter had lasted less than a minute and it seemed the redhead was still somewhat in a state of shock. Hiei might have used that time to run away but somehow his lightning fast speed refused to move him for that moment.

Kurama was soaked with limeade and cola. The chowder had fallen on the lower part of his shirt and the junction of his pants, which just didn’t look right.

Kurama looked up at Yusuke for a moment before looking over at Hiei his eyes narrowing slightly. No that was not how this was supposed to go.

“What is your problem shorty!” the waitress cried indignantly. “I am so sorry, sir, but you saw the kid push me, it’s not my fault!” she pleaded to Kurama who was still glaring at Hiei who was trying his very hardest not to laugh. Despite the fact Kurama’s glare was usually very intimidating when he was such a mess it only served to seem so incredibly out of place on him.

“Hiei… I hate you…”

Kurama had barely whispered them before there was a soft wind and blur of red as the kitsune fled the scene. Hiei disappeared quickly after leaving Yusuke to stay behind for a bit longer to pay the bill which was only a few dollars since for the falling incident the manager was nice enough to knock a good $20 off the bill.

Yusuke looked over at Hiei as he left the restaurant. “Hiei! You come near Kurama again, the next time I’ll kill you!”

Hiei sulked to himself hardly hearing Yusuke’s threat as the human continued after Kurama. Yomi who had been nearby watching the scene unfold mused to himself. Hiei was now out of the picture, but how to deal with Yusuke.

Hiei had ruined any plans for that date to try and make Yusuke look bad, but at least the fire demon had tried it for him and had been the one to receive the redhead’s hate instead of himself.

“Kurama!” Yusuke called after him as the redhead sprinted ahead of him by at least a block or two. He got to his home sooner too. Shiori answered the door and let him in; Kurama was already upstairs cleaning himself off from the restaurant incident. Yusuke stayed downstairs to explain to her what had happened to her son. She offered to make tea though Yusuke declined and headed upstairs to see if there was anyway he could help his distressed boyfriend.

“Kurama?” Yusuke asked as he knocked on Schuichi’s bedroom door and let himself in after. Water was running in the bathroom and Yusuke knocked. The water turned off shortly and he could hear the soft and somewhat ragged breathing of Kurama. He had been crying while he was running. Shiori had mentioned his tears when he came in the door.

Yusuke knocked again, “Kurama?” he let himself in. Perhaps he shouldn’t have, he had expected when the water turned off that Kurama was now out of the shower or tub or whatever and was putting on a towel.

Kurama looked up from where he was in the tub. He smiled softly at Yusuke. “Sorry about running off like that.”

“No it’s okay,” Yusuke replied, trying hard to keep his eyes trained on the kitsune’s face and not trying to make the censored body parts beneath the surface of the water.

Kurama smiled at him and stood stepping out of the tub, giving Yusuke a much appreciated eyeful, and moving to put on his towel robe.

“You weren’t going to take a bath?” Yusuke questioned as Kurama exited the bathroom and shut the door behind the two of them.

“I took a very short shower a few minutes ago, I was going to use the tub for soaking but I guess that can wait,” he replied.

“I’m sorry about what happened,” Yusuke told him, “I’ll make it up to you. I mean it.”

“Oh?” Kurama asked smiling at him almost amusedly. “How about now?”

Yusuke had never known Kurama to be very forward, though since there was a full moon it might have made sense to think that Youko might have something to do with Kurama’s boldness as the redhead leaned forward to Yusuke and gave a light nibble to his lower lip.

Yusuke’s hands almost instinctively came to rest on Kurama’s sides o his waist. Kurama’s arms came up around his neck, one hand to brush through his hair the other to his back pulling him to him, as he stepped backwards leading them to an eventually more comfortable position on his bed. Where Kurama lay under him their lips still locked as Kurama’s tongue for once explored Yusuke’s wet cavern.

Even though Kurama was the one who lay beneath him Yusuke felt Kurama’s control over their situation and allowed him to do so.

Kurama left Yusuke’s mouth then and leaned forward to lick a trail along the hanyou’s neck lighting it on fire as it may well have been.

But just then the door opened. The two looked up at the Makai demon lord who stood in the doorway watching them.
“I need to speak with Kurama,” Yomi told them tonelessly. Yusuke blinked at the demon lord before looking back at Kurama who looked from Yusuke to Yomi and back before nodding slightly.

“I’ll just wait outside then,” Yusuke said sheepishly as he climbed off of Kurama, slightly pink in the cheeks for embarrassment of having the older demon walk in on them.

“So the hanyou is who you are with for the moment, Youko Kurama,” Yomi said thoughtfully. Kurama sat up and looked at Yomi curiously.

“You never said why you were here, Yomi,” Kurama stated at an almost question.

“I’m here for you, Kurama,” Yomi told him simply. “I’m here to take you back with me to the Makai. Ever since before, I loved you, you know.”

“I’m sorry Yomi,” Kurama turned to look out his window. “But I’m with Yusuke now, I have no plans to return to the Makai.”

“Yusuke. You think he’s a wise choice? He’s impetuous, and rash, he’s clumsy and almost is always a fool,” Yomi reminded him. “He acts before he thinks, he’s always getting himself into trouble-”

“I already know that, Yomi,” Kurama cut the older demon off, whimsically. Kurama turned to face him again smiling softly. “But that’s Yusuke, and I accept him, even with his faults.”

“He’s a good person, and in all the time I’ve known him, he’s never done something to hurt someone important to him intentionally.” Kurama explained, “No matter what he does, he goes at it with all his heart.”

“I see. You’ve made your decision then.” Yomi stated more than asked. Kurama met his eyes levelly his soft smile never leaving his face.

“I’m sorry, Yomi,” he told him almost sadly.

“I let you go, Kurama, I can’t make you return with me anymore than I can make you love me,” Yomi told him taking a step towards the kitsune and placing his hands on his shoulders. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t still love you.”

“If anything ever happened,” he continued, “I’d still accept you in the Makai.”

With that he placed a gentle kiss to Kurama’s forehead before removing himself from the room and leaving the Minamino house. Yusuke was still waiting outside his room.

Kurama smiled and let him back in. “So what did Yomi talk to you about?” Yusuke asked off hand as he sat down next to the redhead.
