Prevention
Chapter 2: Prevention
“BOTAN!!!”
The cry seemed to echo throughout the halls of Reikai. All the Oni paused in their frantic scampering to look in the direction of its source and wonder what could have caused the chibi demi-god to let out such a fearsome cry.
“Hai, Koenma-sama.” Botan replied as she rushed into his office, her heart pounding.
Had she done something to make him mad?
All she knew was that it had to be really important if she was called from her duties.
His mouth worked frantically on the pacifier as he paced back and for the in front of his desk.
“Sir, what is it?” she asked even more anxious now.
“Botan, there’s a ‘very’ important matter I need you to take care of.”
“What is it, sir?” she asked still on edge.
Jumping onto his desk he picked up a piece of paper and handed it to her. Slowly she reached out and took it, scanning its contents she gasped then looked at Koenma horrified.
“S-sir, th-this is terrible!” she cried, clutching the paper tighter.
“I know. “ he stated simply. “My father is being a ‘bit’ vindictive.”
“This is more then a ‘bit’, sir.” She said with a little venom. Koenma gave her a look that clearly screamed ‘DUH!’ before jumping into his chair and sitting down.
“Sir, I don’t want to guide another friend.” She whispered deject, and being that she knew before hand she would be there to witness everything helplessly.
“I didn’t ask you to be a guide, Botan. You’re the only one I can trust with this assignment.” He replied.
“Sir?”
“Botan, I’m going to prevent this from happening.” She stared at him with wide-eyed disbelief.
“B-but, sir. Enma-daio….”
“My father did this because he couldn’t get to Yusuke directly, so being the friend that I am I’m going to stop it.” He declared. “But… because she’s not a special case and an ordinary human I could only do so much.”
“What do you mean, sir?” she asked swallowing thickly as he stared directly into her eyes.
“I was only able to….’extend’ the time before her true death. And not only that I was able to make it a bit more….humane.” he answered after a bit.
Still staring into her eyes he handed her another piece of paper.
“Follow those instructions carefully, Botan. “
She nodded as she took the paper, but something stopped her.
“Sir, how is this possible?”
“Botan, everything is about sacrifice. Unfortunately I could give nothing on this.” He said looking away form her. “ You’ll see why when you read the instructions. It’s a heavy price to pay alone, but it’ll allow her to be here when Yusuke gets back.”
See the defeated look on his face she knew he wanted to do more but had been restricted. So straightening her back she materialized the oar and left Reikai.
