Chapter 3
Protecting a Murderer
The car ride home was silent and awkward. The chief knew that Yusuke knew something he didn’t, but didn’t feel like trying to pry it out of Yusuke. The chief dropped Yusuke off at Genkai’s temple, for Yusuke usually lived there, or bummed off someone else.
He walked in the door, his mind tired and sore from all the “what if’s” running through his mind. He kicked off his shoes and walked towards the kitchen. He opened the cupboard and pulled out some of his liquid friend. He heard an amused voice behind him say “You shouldn’t drink that on an empty stomach, but you already knew that didn’t you?” Yusuke smiled and turned to see Kurama leaning against the door-frame.
“Yeah, yeah, I hear ya, Fluffy.” Yusuke said as he reached into the fridge for some food.
“… Fluffy?” Kurama mumbled making Yusuke chuckle.
As Yusuke sat down for dinner, he looked into his boyfriends deep emerald eyes and felt tired. He was glad to have Kurama there, he would always understand him. He could feel all his anxiety flow out of his body as he looked up at Kurama. He readied himself to tell the red-head everything that happened that day. He sighed and looked at his plate of food and said, “So… I found Kira today.”
Kurama looked up and said “So… how does that make you feel?”
Yusuke continued to look at his plate intently as he said “All this time I had hoped that it was Kira who had killed Keiko. She had died so suddenly from a heart-attack that I convinced myself that could have been it. At least if it was Kira, I could personally wring his neck for doing that to her, but if it wasn’t…” He stopped for a moment to take a swig of his beer before saying, “It wasn’t him. Kira didn’t kill Keiko. Boton was probably right; it most likely was a shinigami expanding their life. She just happened to be the first one it saw.” He took another swig of his beer. “I’m just stressed out and pissed off from a couple of different things.”
“Really, what else is happening?”
“Well… it looks like Sniper is back. He murdered Doctor not far from here. The thing is… I saw him today, and I was about to rip him a new ass-hole when… his eyes… I just…couldn’t.” Yusuke stared at the ceiling for a while, drinking his beer ever few seconds before looking back at Kurama. “I’ve had a long day. Mind if we go to bed?”
Kurama nodded his head, and they both headed towards bed.
*****************************************************************************************************************
Sniper stood at the entrance to Demon’s Door Cave. The rain was pouring in sheets, freezing his to the bone. As he stood there, he knew it was to one place no one would find him, and yet… could he go back in there? Back in the place were he had been brain-washed and where he had killed. He shivered thinking about it… or maybe that was due to the rain, he couldn’t tell. He took a deep breath and slowly walked in the cave, taking his bike with him.
About and hour-and-a-half later Sniper walked into the clearing in cave, and leaned his bike against the wall. He grabbed some clothes from his saddle bag and changed out of his clothes. It was completely dark inside, except for the small bit of city light streaming from the hole in the cave ceiling.
He didn’t like being back in the cave, not one bit, but here was the one place he could survive. He walked tiredly towards the relatively intact couch that was still there, and lay down. As he closed his eyes and began to fall asleep, he heard the mumbling stream. To him it sounded like Sensui’s voice, muttering instructions into his ear. Finally he managed to drift into a nervous, night-mare-ridden sleep.
*****************************************************************************************************************
Yusuke didn’t get much sleep that night. Nightmares intruded his sleep all night, waking him up or keeping him from getting a good night’s sleep. He tossed and turned in the bed, occasionally so violently he knocked Kurama off the bed. Images of Raito, Ryuuku, Keiko, Sensui and Sniper all flashed through his mind. Depictions of Keiko dying, Sniper being stabbed by Hiei, Dice flying at the speed of bullets lodging themselves into Doctor’s chest, all flashed in his mind through his mind at a dizzying pace, with morbid accuracy.
Kurama more than once had to stop the mid-dream Yusuke from hurting himself from his thrashing. He comforted the awake Yusuke by whispering encouraging words into his ear, even as his own mind faltered on if they were going to be okay. By the time 5:30 rolled around, both of them knew that it was futile to attempt to sleep again.
They watched TV on the couch, Yusuke wrapped protectively in his lover’s arms. As Yusuke listened to Kurama’s breathing, it suddenly occurred to him where Sniper was hiding: Demon Door’s Cave.
Yusuke stood outside of the cave less that two hours later and slowly made. He walked assuredly through the maze of tunnels, for he knew them like the back of his hand. Every year, no matter where he was, he came to the cave on the anniversary of Sensui’s death.
As he walked into the clearing, he was greeted first with the sight of the sinning tree. A chill went down his spine what he saw it. Every year he hoped it was gone, and every year he felt chilled when he knew that it never would be.
He looked over at the sleeping Sniper on the couch, and leaned against the wall. He lit a cigarette and waited for the raven-haired killer to awake. He knew that the man on the couch needed as much sleep as he could get.
It didn’t take long for him to wake up; in face Yusuke didn’t even finish his cigarette. Sniper grabbed a die and aimed it at Yusuke who was preoccupied putting out his cigarette.
“How did you find you’re way through the maze?” He rasped out.
“You see that blood stain on the couch over there? I was killed there fighting your former boss. It’s a long story, but I’m back from the dead…again.
Sniper looked around for a minute, before setting his sights on the sinning tree, obviously disturbed by it. “That’s what happens when you piss off fox-boy. So why don’t you tell me what happened the other night?” Yusuke asked.
Sniper sighed loudly and said, “I was minding my own business, setting a fire and getting ready to get some dinner, when I felt some one enter my territory. It was Doctor, but something was wrong, it was like he was being controlled or something. He suddenly opened his territory and was about to attack me so… I instinctively… I freaked out afterwards, I knew the police were going to find me, but I could take care of that. Then I thought about you and when your short friend stabbed me. How it felt when the blade pierced my chest, and I ran. Now I’m stuck, there’s really nothing I can do. I will be found guilty and thrown into prison for something that I had to do to survive. After all, I am a person who disappeared from all records, didn’t finish school, was a former accomplice to a psychotic murderer, has no alibi, and murdered him with a weapon no ballistic test can prove I did it in self defense.” He was shaking as he spoke from his shot nerves and despair not to mention hunger.
Yusuke stood up and threw a box of granola bars at Sniper “They may taste like shit, but they’ll keep you alive. I’ll see what I can so to help.” He waved and walked off, leaving a confused Sniper behind.
When Yusuke got back to the car, he pulled out his cell phone and dialed Boton. He had given her a cell phone whenever he first came back from demon world, because, in his words, “That troublesome, our-riding wretch could be down-right impossible to reach!”
Yusuke had to call a few times before Boton picked up the phone.
“Damn it – how- is – wait- h-hello?” She answered.
“Boton, it’s Yusuke, get your ass down here I need to talk to you.”
“Yusuke, get that stick out of your ass, or I’ll shove my oar up it!”
“Yeah, yeah. Just get here as quickly as possible.”
Boton was down-to-Earth within minutes. She looked impatient and absolutely pissed off.
“What in the world can possible be this important?! I was supposed to meet up with my friend Remu!”
“You are both death gods! It’s not like one of you is going to drop off the face of the planet! Look, Sniper killed Doctor, but he did it completely in self defense. Can you find Doctor’s soul and ask him what happened? Oh, by the way, could you mention to Koenma that I found the guy that’s been making the extra paperwork.”
Yusuke called Kurama from his cell phone as he drove down the road on his way to the police station. His mind was blurred and moving at the pace of a slug. He needed Kurama’s sharp, calculating mind to help him on this one.
“Hey fox, how do I negotiate with the police to stop looking for an obvious murderer?”
Kurama sighed at the other end and said “Play dirty. Find their weakness and nit-pick until they leave you alone, like picking a lock.”
“Not everyone picks locks for a hobby, fox-boy.”
“Knowing you though, you understood exactly what I just said, and are trying to find a reason to be a smart-ass.”
“Guilty.”
“I’m guessing you found Sniper then?”
“Yeah. He definitely did it in self-defense.”
“Do you have a plan?”
“Yeah, I just the thought of one. Later, fox.”
“Later, smart-ass.”
“You just can’t stop thinking about my ass, can you?”
“True as that may be, you’ve got more important things to do then flirt with me.”
“Are you sure? Because last time I checked-“
“Goodbye, Yusuke.”
“Oh, fine. See you later, fluffy.”
Yusuke sighed as he picked up the phone once more. He hated having to play dirty and black-ball people, but her, it’s what had to be done. He almost felt a wave of nostalgia as he dialed the number he had known since he was a teenager, the number to Chief Yagami’s office.
“Yagami.” A bored and distracted voice said on the other end.
“Hey old guy, look, I need to get something from you.” Yusuke had to contain his inward chuckle as he heard fingers tapping on a desk from Yagami’s side.
“Urameshi…”
“Okay, okay, I’ll try not to call you ‘old guy’ anymore. Anyway, I need Raito’s number; can you give it to me?”
“His number is…”
Yusuke had been waiting for over an hour for that stupid psychopath to show up at their assigned meeting place. He was cold, irritated and couldn’t smoke because of the town’s new public smoking ban. He was one of the first to know when that ban took effect, the police department made sure he knew about all new laws. He felt like pounding Raito’s face into a street lamp whenever he saw him walk coolly up to him, Ryuuku floating behind him nonchalantly.
“I’m getting straight to business here; I know what I need from you.”
“Oh, really, and what would that be?”
“I need for you to agree with me when I talk to the Chief.”
“Is that all?”
“No. I know who the killer is, and I need you to promise that no matter what, you will not kill him.”
“It’s my job to-“
“Yeah, yeah, I know, and personally, I don’t give a damn.”
“What do you plan on telling my father?”
“I’m going to tell him that I was wrong, Kira killed Doctor.”
“And why should the believe you?”
“Because I will have Boton tell them that Sniper died.”
“And who, pray tell, is Boton?” Raito asked smugly.
Ryuuku surprised them all by saying “Boton… wow. She’s the leader of the gods of death. She’s the only death god who can kill demons.” Raito looked from Ryuuku back to Yusuke, who now had a blue-haired girl sitting next to him. She looked at him with intent fury in her eyes. Never before had Yusuke seen her so pissed off that she was completely speechless. Raito was shaken from seeing someone so openly furious with him, and just nodded and walked away.
A tear of rage fell silently down Boton’s cheek before she turned and placed her head on a very stunned Yusuke’s shoulder. He looked down at the sobbing reaper on should and asked her what was the matter. Boton looked up at him and said “It’s all his fault. It’s his fault that Remu’s dead.”
“What?!”
“I don’t feel like explaining the whole thing, but it’s all his fault.” Yusuke tried his best to comfort the emotionally raw reaper until he could lead her to his car and go towards Genkai’s place. As he tried his best to comfort her, waves of contempt radiated towards Raito. There was no more farting around. He could no longer let Raito continue. He had fucked one too many times with the wrong demon, and he was going to make that asshole pay.
