Scene 24 ----------- Two Days Later
* Hiei is sitting in the clearing in front of the West Wall cave, cooking a large wild rabbit he'd caught. He half glances up when he feels a familiar presence approach.
Hiei- How the h--- are you getting in here? You don't sprout wings.
Habataro- No. But the plants part for me the same way they do Coutaro. We do belong to you. Remember?
* Hiei just stares into the flames surrounding the roasting rabbit. Habataro sighs when he realizes that he's now being ignored. He ignores his instincts, that urge him to leave, and sits down beside Hiei.
Hiei- Why are you here?
Habataro- I'm here.. because you're here.
* He thumbs over his shoulder toward the cave.
Hiei- It's my Ravine. I earned it, I claimed it, I can live anywhere in it that I d--- well please.
* Hiei takes the rabbit out of the flames.
Hiei- And you have no right to tell me otherwise, cat.
Habataro- I'm not here to tell you anything, sir.
* Hiei rips the rabbit in half.
Hiei- Front or back?
Habataro- Front, please.
* Hiei tosses him the head and forequarters of the rabbit. The Lynx juggles the hot meal, but Hiei just begins to rip into a smoking hindquarter. For the most part, the two demons eat in silence. Then Hiei tosses his half's cleaned bones away and looks at Hab again.
Hiei- I'll ask you again.. Why are you here?
Habataro- What? I'm not allowed to be concerned about my Alpha?
* Hiei snorts.
Hiei- I'm not an Alpha.. I'm nothing but a curse to everyone I..
Habataro- After the life you've had one would think that you'd be used to death.
Hiei- The only death I anticipate.. is my own.. After being an Alpha, yourself, one would think that you'd take advantage of this situation.
Habataro- My honor won't allow such nonsense.. Master Hiei, I understand all about losing mates.. and family. I know that talking is pretty much senseless right now.
Hiei- Hn. Then why are you..?
Habataro- I'm here because you came to me when I went through this not long ago. I'm just here to keep you company.. Your mates are too afraid to approach you, but they are very concerned.
* Hiei flinches slightly at the Lynx's words. True to his word, Hab tosses the remains of his half of the eaten rabbit away and leans back on his arms. He lifts his face to let the sun's mid-morning warmth flow over him. Silence reigns for several minutes between them.
Hiei(Quietly)- Her body couldn't handle the heat.. that my brat generated during its birth.
* Habataro looks at Hiei.
Habataro- Boy or girl?
* Hiei snaps out of his musings to look at Habataro.
Hiei- What?
Habataro- The.. brat.. Mine was a boy.
Hiei- Girl.. I think.
Habataro- You think?
Hiei- I haven't seen it.. up close.
Habataro- You don't want her to live either?
* Hiei looks away again, crossing his arms.
Hiei- She's better off not knowing me.. They would have all been better off...
Habataro- You know, the two of us are very fortunate.. We both have mates that care deeply for us.. Mates that are loyal to us because they want to be, not because they have to be.
* Hiei lowers his eyes.
Hiei- I've heard your words, Hab.. I understand their meaning.. I just..
Habataro- You cared for her.. As I care for my Roqueyo.. For Falina and Aiko, also.
* Hiei doesn't answer.
Habataro- You need to go back and hold the baby.. or you'll lose her.. She needs a parent's energy.
* Hiei half glances toward Habataro.
Habataro- You've decided to take the position of Ultimate Alpha.. Is this not why you trained your mates to be so strong?
Hiei- No. Not for that reason..
Habataro- At least not knowingly.
* Now Hiei scowls at the Lynx.
Habataro- Hn.. But it will take more than physical strength, Hiei.. There will need to be a bond of trust between you and them that no other rival can tear apart.. They trust you, but you must trust them.. Closing yourself away from them like this is not wise.
Hiei- Cat,..
* Habataro stands.
Habataro- I'm going.. I hope I've said enough.
* Hiei watches the Lynx demon leave. After a few more moments of contemplation Hiei stands, draws the dark flames back into his hand, then flits away.
