Book 5 - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Hiei woke up, his neck stiff as the rest of his body from lying on the cold stone of the room he was in. He looked around groggily to see himself in a room with a few other beings, mostly humans and demons, Yusuke being one of them. There seemed to be more than just demons; full humans, spirits and others sat around the room, which stank of rotting flesh and pain.
He looked around, noticing all of them wearing tall leather collars with what seemed to be wards etched into the leather. Hiei felt at his neck with his hand and hissed at the electric like blast that came from it, buckling his knees and only stopping when his hand fell away.
“It’s no use. Don’t even try.”
Hiei looked up at a male demon through his haze and in a few minutes had recovered enough to look up at the haggard looking demon sitting near him. The older demon sighed, seemingly defeated. He hung his head, showing Hiei a clear view of the scarring on his shoulders where it seemed repeated shocks had opened his skin up and healed badly.
“What are you talking about, old one?” Hiei asked, trying to move his neck at the discomfort of the collar’s rub into his mate’s bitemark. He felt the small shocks as it crackled at the movement.
“Your collar boy. It won’t come off. Welcome to the hell of that which is solitude with others.”
“You aren’t making any sense.”
Another demon looked up, still tired and scarred, but younger than the first. “He’s been tortured enough I am sure the old buck might be on the verge of the abyss. You honestly don’t know what is going on, do you?”
Hiei scowled turning to check on Yusuke who was three feet from him. The other male was still passed out, snoring quite loudly. He turned to look at the younger demon, his hair spiked up, and eyes dull from lack of sleep. “Who are you? What is going on?”
The demon stretched out his legs, seemingly stiff for a young warrior, looking thoughtfully at the fire demon. “Let me guess, you live in the human world don’t you. I didn’t know they had ventured out of the Makai.”
Hiei scowled as the younger demon shook his head and stared out at the others in the room, most of them either weakened or close to death. The demon sighed. “My name is Toge. The beast-catcher Kurojin and his apprentice Norica captured you. They brought you here to be trained. This is the training center of the Tori Hiburakku.”
“The what?”
“The Tori Hiburakku. They are a race of spirits that don’t follow the laws of any land or world. They set up camp once every thousand years and steal beings to ‘train’. Spirits, humans, demons, doesn’t matter to them, so long as they have corporeal bodies and are able to fight and breed.”
“What?” Hiei was startled a little more by this than all the rest of the information. “What do you mean breed?”
“This is only what I have heard in Makai.” The younger demon leaned closer to Hiei as he spoke, apparently trying not to disturb the old demon that had fallen asleep. “The Tori steal male and female alike, fighting them until the top fighters are decided. Even if you’re not the best they will sometimes take you if there is potential in your blood. They inject you with some sort of drug that makes your sexual appetite run wild. To them, we are not beings but beasts. As humans have dogfights, the Toris use us, fighting ‘til death either claims us, or we prove our offspring will have potential. When the fights are decided they breed the winners, taking the children away from their mothers and training them to be ruthless against each other. If you prove to be a good fighter or breeder you will live. A bad one, you die. To them, it is simple.”
Hiei scowled as the other demon told him this, wondering how he was going to get out of this. He had no intention of being with any female but his mate and would kill who he had to in order to get out of there.
“I wonder why they wanted you, you’re awfully short. I can tell you have the Jagan eye, but I don’t understand why you are here. Are you some sort of earth demon?”
“Amaya…”
“Amaya? Who is…”
Hiei turned away from the man, talking quickly as he tried to wake up Yusuke. “If they’re after me, they’ll be after her. Wake up. Damn it, Urameshi. Wake up!”
“Stop it Keiko. We just got done, let me recover, woman.”
Hiei stood and kicked the rei-kai detective in the side, getting a loud ‘oof’ out of the man for his trouble.
“You awake now?”
Yusuke sat up and looked around as he spoke, taking in his surroundings. “Holy crap Hiei. What did you… uh what are we doing here?”
Hiei just looked at the flustered demon he had kicked as he looked around. He had to get stuck with an incompetent detective in this prison, didn’t he?
“Don’t worry about where we are. We just need to figure out how to get out of here.”

“What in the hell do you mean, ‘I can’t find them.’? They went to dinner six blocks from my apartment. They don’t just run off and they don’t just fall off the face of the planet. What the in the depths of the Spirit World is going on?”
Amaya was not happy when Koenma had told him that he, the junior lord of the Spirit World, could not locate two demons he usually kept in nearly constant contact with. He was not happy about it either as his Detective was one of the missing.
“It is not just them; other demons, spirits and humans are disappearing. Many of them quite strong fighters or have rare abilities. We aren’t sure exactly what is going on. Just this morning, one of our ferry girls came up missing. Botan is still out looking for her with a few others. Right now, I suggest that until we figure out what is going on and find the missing beings, you not be left alone. I have contacted Kurama and Kanmuri. They are being asked to stay with you.”
“You can’t order me around like this, Koenma. I don’t serve you! Why do they have to stay with me?”
Koenma dropped his head, he didn’t want to deal with an irate, cranky water mo-zaku right now; he needed to figure out where these people had gone.
“It’s a request Saikoubi, not an order. Hiei would never forgive any of us if something happened to you and that baby. I would rather deal with you in the state of annoyance, then him in full demon form, coming at me with that dragon of his. Please, for once, will you just let them protect you?”
The water demon stormed out of the office, opening the gate back to her apartment. Koenma watched her, even pregnant and angry, she still could exude a heavy weight on him. “Angry and expecting agrees with her. If only she were on the payroll. Right now I could use some of those skills”
